Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Hi. I suggested Seth (Dinosaur King: Retold version) as a CM; to the best of my knowledge, he got 13 [tup] and no [tdown]. Since I'm guessing he's in, should I start doing a writeup of him?

Abstain on Momoka. Also, I think I found a image for Satan from Castlevania Lord of Shadows. Or rather from the second game.

Edit: Okay, this might be more complicated than I thought.

Also @Krimzon

I can definitely Sympathize, I had a simmilar experience with Susie from bendy and the ink machine, she was Cut for being too tragic or too crazy. When I felt the game showed her to be a Loathsome Sadist who went out of her way to be evil as possible and hurt people who had nothing to do with the admittedly awful stuff that happened to her, it was almost like I'd viewed a completely different Charachter then how others described her. The best thing to do is consider this is a YMMV Trope, in my head Susie will always be a CM. And in yours Momoka will always be one as well. Also I'll Echo Elfen and suggest doing her on the HS cleanup Wich is what I'm doing for Susie.

Alright, time to take a look at a CGI re-imagining of one of the most iconic animated movies of all time, and with it, a re-imagining of one of the most iconic villains in Disney history....

What's the Work?

The Lion King (2019), by Jon Favreau, is only the latest in a series of Disney cash-grabs, er, remakes, of their many beloved animated classics, this one a photo-realistic remake of the 1994 mega-hit The Lion King. The film essentially follows the same plot as the original (minus the charm and emotion), following the journey of a young lion prince, Simba, who goes into exile after the death of his father, king Mufasa, only to years later return to claim his rightful place as king.

And the cause of all of his troubles? His conniving uncle, Scar.

Who is Scar? What Does He Do?

Mufasa's younger, weaker, and more vicious brother, Scar lives in the shadow of his brother's magnificence. Having tried and failed to challenge Mufasa for the throne years ago, Scar is left bitterly resentful, especially due to queen Sarabi, whom Scar desires as his mate, choosing Mufasa over him. Introduced attempting to eat Mufasa's advisor Zazu in a scene that, unlike the original, is decidedly not Played for Laughs, Scar makes his resentment at the birth of Simba known to Mufasa, as this means he is no longer first-in-line to be king.

As Simba grows into a rebellious and headstrong young cub, Scar takes advantage of his desire to prove himself by tricking him into entering the Elephant Graveyard, the domain of the rapacious hyena clan, led by Shenzi. Simba and his friend Nala are nearly torn to pieces by the hyenas and are only saved by Mufasa's timely arrival. After this failure, Scar enters the graveyard and brokers a deal with Shenzi himself, offering them a place where "everything the light touches is theirs for the kill", in exchange for helping him dispose of Mufasa and Simba. The hyenas agree, and Scar subsequently tricks Simba into entering a gorge before signaling for the hyenas to chase a herd of wildebeests into said gorge, nearly trampling Simba to death. Scar warns Mufasa, who manages to narrowly save Simba, but finds himself hanging precariously from a cliff edge. Scar seizes the opportunity and strikes Mufasa off the cliff and back into the gorge to his death. As Simba mourns, Scar arrives and blames him for his father's death, twisting the knife noticeably more than in the original, and convinces him to flee, only to send the hyenas to finish them off. Though they fail, Scar nevertheless acquires the throne and allows the hyenas to enter the Pridelands.

And with Scar as ruler, what happens to the Elephant Graveyard starts to happen to the Pridelands. The hyenas are unleashed upon the fertile land and begin hunting everything in sight with no restrictions, with Scar himself personally leading them. After years of overhunting, the herds are forced to flee and the Pridelands become a desolate wasteland. Scar, however, is more concerned with getting Sarabi to become his queen; when she refuses, Scar punishes the pride by making them eat after the hyenas, basically starving them, as the hyenas don't leave much. The situation growing dire, a now grown-up Nala flees in order to find help, with some assistance from Zazu, who has become The Exile since Scar's kingship and is constantly under threat of murder every time he returns to Pride Rock.

Upon being scorned once more by Sarabi and compared to Mufasa, Scar snaps and starts beating her, the fight cut short by the timely arrival of Simba, spurred to action by Nala, Rafiki and Mufasa's spirit. Though initially taken off-guard, Scar is quick to retaliate, using Simba's guilt over Mufasa's death to back him into a corner, or in this case, off a cliff-side. Preparing to toss Simba to his death, Scar secretly reveals to him that he was the one who killed Mufasa. This backfires, as an enraged Simba attacks Scar and accuses him in front of the pride. Though Scar attempts to defend himself, his knowledge of Mufasa's death despite claiming to have not been to the gorge in time exposes him as Mufasa's murderer. His crimes exposed, Scar simply orders the hyenas to "Kill them all". In the intense battle that ensues, Simba corners Scar at the top of Pride Rock, to which a desperate Scar foists the blame on the hyenas, proclaiming that he was planning to kill them all himself. Simba spares Scar's life and orders him to leave, but Scar, unwilling to abandon "his destiny", attacks Simba once his guard is down, leading to a short but fierce battle that culminates in Scar plunging off the cliff. He survives the fall....only to be attacked and ripped apart by the hyenas, who had overheard his attempt to betray them.

Heinous Standard?

Matches it, arguably more than the original. He has all the crimes in the original, with a few added flourishes. The ruination of the Pridelands, which in the original was more due to his apathy, is here more explicitly his doing, leading the hyenas in overhunting everything in sight as a power move, with him even stating that he despises how much restraint Mufasa shown in hunting. He also purposefully starves the lionesses, and in the end, when his crimes are exposed, he orders them all killed.

Freudian Excuse?

None, really. For his talk about spending his life in the dark, begging for scraps, the worst he seems to face is that he isn't king and couldn't get the lioness he desired. Mufasa clearly cares about him despite the two fighting in the past, mentioning he won't banish Scar as the Pridelands is his home.

Mitigating factors

Also no. Scar's even more sociopathic than the original. He isn't as verbally abusive to the hyenas this time around, but this can be easily explained by them not being as easily pushed around in this version. They explicitly follow Shenzi's lead and they even consider eating Scar in their first meeting, so it stands they wouldn't put up with the treatment Scar gives them in the original. He still regardless sells them out at the end.

Final Verdict?

I'd say keep him. I have been questioned whether this version is distinct enough to warrant its own write-up, and while the film is pretty cut-and-paste, it's still a separate entity from the original and Scar has several added motivations and crimes, so I'd say yes.

Oh boy, I have waited a long time for this. Easy [tup] to Live Action!Scar.

Also, I personally believe that him fooling Simba into thinking Mufasa’s death was his fault is way crueler here than in the original, especially since Scar had the gall to accuse Simba of MURDERING Mufasa, and has additional lines after the “What would your mother think?” Bit that makes Scar MUCH more crueler.

A thought just popped up when I saw your posts on KH Scar. Did anyone propose KH Shan Yu? He had no interactions with Pete, Maleficent, or one of the Organization XIII members, yet he has the ability to summon Heartless. I might argue that there some added actions to him as well, like setting up ambush traps for the heroes. And also the dark aura around him before the fight, did he become a Heartless or what?

So is that EP possible, or is that not enough?

Sure to Scar and yes to Momoko. If she was "was always a bloodthirsty wretch" before she got her Freudian Excuse (with apparently others being tortured like her, but not turning out to be as evil as her), planned to kill tons of people and raped someone (I don't know the series, I'm just basing myself on the page article, the EP and dragonfire5000's arguments against her) which isn't apparently something the AAA did, I think she can make it.
