Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

It has been a while since I saw magnum force, but I do remember his plan involving corrupting 3 officers into killing innocents, i don’t think well intended extremists do that, but if anyone has seen the film, do you think it would be a good idea for me to EP Biggs.

Here's what I've got for Scar if anyone's interested. Feel free to correct any mistakes I made (decided to cut out a lot of the personal torment to Simba since the newer evil conqueror stuff kinda dwarfs that for crimes):

  • The Lion King: Scar is the scheming younger brother of King Mufasa, driven to bitterness when his position in line to the throne is lost after the birth of his nephew, Simba. Tricking Simba and his friend Nala into entering the Elephant Graveyard to be killed by his hyena henchmen, Scar then orchestrates a wildebeest stampede and tosses Mustafa to his death when his former plan fails, blaming and exiling Simba for the deed. As king, Scar's mismanagement leads the Pride Lands to ruin, with him remaining apathetic to the mass starvation. When Simba returns, Scar tries to have him publicly executed, revealing his role in Mufasa's death to torment Simba and cowardly tries to blame his crime's on his hyenas when Simba has him at his mercy. The Lion Guard reveals that Scar lead the original Lion Guard, killing them all when they refused his earlier attempts to overthrow Mufasa with him. In the second season, Scar's spirit tries to lead the animals of the Outlands on a brutal conquest of the Pride Lands: cutting off the river and entire water supply of the whole Pride Lands; and eventually simply trying to have them burn the savannah and all its inhabitants. Even after the death of his physical body, Scar remained a hateful creature driven by spite.

OK so I got an EP for you guys from the 2019 film The Intruder

What's the Work?

The Intruder is a horror film that came out this year. It focuses on Scott and Annie Howard, a young couple looking to buy a house that is away from the city. They find a house in Napa Valley that Annie, who grew up in the country, loves and Scott is somewhat unsure about. The property the house is on is called Foxglove and it is owned by Charlie Peck.

Who is Charlie Peck and What Does He Do?

Charlie Peck is the owner of Foxglove, who is introduced killing a deer in front of the Howards, saying that there is a bounty on deer since they eat all of the plants in the area. He explains that he lost his wife to cancer two years ago and that he's going to move to Florida to live with his daughter.

After he sells Foxglove he starts to show up at the house frequently, becoming good friends with Annie. He meets Scott's friend Mike and grows to hate him both due to him advocating for the Howards to renovate the house but also because he smokes and leaves the butts on the yard. He even has a fantasy of attacking him during Thanksgiving dinner because of an argument over the house and puts out a cigarette on Mike's car seat as revenge.

Scott eventually gets suspicious of Charlie and learns that he was lying about his wife's death and that she actually committed suicide. He gets drunk and tells Charlie not to go to the house anymore, to Annie's protest. Charlie responds by hitting Scott with his car while he's out running, hospitalizing him. While in the hospital Scott has Mike do some research on Charlie and finds that he's had several legal issues with his construction business, that his daughter had changed her name from Cassidy to Vanessa Smith, and that there was actually a murder investigation regarding the death of Charlie's wife. Scott sends Mike to check on Annie and Charlie intercepts him, saying that he's getting a "second chance" as soon as he gets rid of Scott, And kills him.

Scott gets out of the hospital and gets a hold of Vanessa and learns that she's actually in Maine and that Charlie is a pathological liar who murdered his wife when she threatened to divorce him and take the house. Annie learns that Charlie has actually been living beneath the house in a series of secret tunnels where he stored Mike's body. Charlie knocks out Annie and tries to rape her right as Scott arrives. Eventually after a long fight Charlie is incapacitated ans Scott gets a hold of his gun. Charlie taunts Scott, who hates guns, by saying that he won't shoot him. Annie calls the police saying that Scott has just shot an intruder and Scott shoots Charlie.

Mitigating Factors?

None really. His daughter says that she'd kill him if she ever saw him. He says, "I love you" right before killing his wife but he says the same thing while trying to kill Annie. He claims to love Annie but he drops any semblance of that after she stabs him. He does have a son but he's never mentioned outside of an old family photo and a brief mention.

Now there's some implications of him being at least somewhat insane. Aside from the violent Thanksgiving fantasy the film highlights his anger over Scott replacing a large tapestry by having a bunch of loud noises drown out Scott as it zooms in on Charlie, making him seem unstable. He's also shown stomping around mumbling to himself while grabbing his head right before he attacks Annie. I don't think that this is really enough to establish him as insane enough for him to not have moral agency though.

Heinousness?

He's the only villain so there's no competition. I think that he does pass the baseline because of the attempted rape.

Final Verdict?

I'd say yes.

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheon

Yes to Putnam and Old Vinnie, but I'm going against the grain and voting [tdown] to Jingu; I don't think he stands out enough when his only unique crime is trying to kill his own daughter. No to the above candidate as well; I don't think he quite passes the baseline even with the attempted rape.

What's the work?

First: Do No Harm is a 20K story on Fiction Press about a family of immortals in the 23rd century: pacifistic, hemophobic doctor Chastity "Vanilla" Jackson, her mage husband Christopher, her sister Violet, her other sister and social worker Katherine, her niece Rosalina, and her brother Kidari. All Myths Are True is prominent, as demons, zombies, and mages are a very big part of the story. The character I am proposing is already on the list, but he was never properly E Pd and his writeup seems to rely on outdated information. If he's voted up, I'll craft a rewrite for him, and if he's voted down, we can just remove his entry.

Who is he? What does he do?

Marshall Eccelstein was a former millitary general before retiring a year ago. He married Violet sometime ago, and became very abusive towards her, chaining her against the wall naked and brutally beating her bloody. Despite the fact that she kept healing after he beat her bloody, he continued out of frustration. By the time of the story, he has figured out a way to reach Violet's family, and hires specialized mercenaries to kill Vanilla, Katherine, and Kidari as well as capture Rosalina, who fled a few days ago. Marshall also intends to have the mercenaries torture Violet to death after the targets are killed.

The demon Astaroth, after getting his physical body destroyed, enters Marshall's brain and offers him the opportunity to become a demon, which he accepts. Marshall is given a new body, which he uses to rape and murder Vanilla's friend Amy, and then kill Vanilla's other friend Daniel. Marshall then resurrects him as a zombie, planning to force Vanilla to kill him. When Marshall and Daniel go to Vanilla's house, Vanilla kills Daniel and Marshall, quickly realizing that he is dangerous.

After Marshall is ejected from his body, he chooses a new name for himself(Cerununnos). Deciding to see if he is capable of possessing a machine, he goes to a secret black ops facility and drives the entire facility insane, then successfully possesses the body he was looking for. Later, he hijacks a prison bus full of violent criminals, drives them all insane, and lets them loose on innocent people, taking sick delight in the chaos that ensues, before possessing various police officers and shooting officers and civilians. However, one of Vanilla's brothers, Shoji, fights and defeats Cerununnos, with Cerununnos learning that there are 16 alive members of the Jackson family in the process.

Cerununnos, having repossessed the android and plotting to murder all of the members of the Jackson family, sees a bus, resulting in him plotting to slaughter everyone in the bus and then kill a family with the bus. When he attempts to hijack it, however, Violet, who has fled captivity, defeats him and destroys his body. After being defeated, Cerununnos is told by Astaroth that it is too dangerous to attempt to kill the family, and he and Astaroth vanish somewhere else.

Heinous standard?

The heinous standard is quite high. The organization that the mercenaries were part of, the Knights of Purity, are fanatical Knight Templars who murdered millions of innocent people to seal Astaroth away long ago, Astaroth himself destroyed Nagasaki back in WWII and puts an innocent man in an And I Must Scream fate, and even Vanilla nuked New York during WWIII as revenge for the destructon of Japan. However, Marshall's domestic abuse is definitely a unique crime for the story, not to mention his whole "release violent criminals from prison" bit. Driving people insane is also quite unique by the standards of the story.

In the 1st chapter, there is a villain who plans to experiment on children he has captured, but I don't think he gets enough focus or characterization.

Mitigating factors? Freudian Excuse?

None; he views his family as tools rather than people, and his not wanting Rosalina killed was just because he wanted to have her under his control again.

Conclusion?

I'm leaning yes. If he is approved, he'll probably be my most hateable CM so far.

Ehhhhhhh, [tdown] for Charlie Peck. I agree that the attempted rape does make him nastier than usual, but I don't feel that pushes him into full-on CM territory. He basically has a couple murders under his belt.

I'll [tup] Marshall Eccelstein though. Story sounds batshit insane in all the good ways.

Yea to Marshall, but likewise...Charlie is a bit too limited, even with the rape. He's kind of generic for a film like this.

Weak [tup] Charlie Peck

Note but, is funny, Scar used to be one of our biggest borderline examples, which came with heavy discussion.

But now, with his Lion Guard actions? He's a super easy keeper.

I'm curious, what CMs have people gotten approved that they hate the most? Mine are Tempus due to him raping a woman to death just to get his petty revenge on a person, and Tin Lum Yin because he manipulated a brain damaged person.
