Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Alright....Since Zykan got some decent [tup] vote. Here's a rough draft for him:

Kirby Adventure: Zykan is a self-proclaimed “Knight of Shadows” who was introduced to be one of Talzo’s thug at first. However, he revealed to be something worse in his second appearance. Throughout the comic, Zykan commits several dishonorable acts such as turning Saia into a statue and threatens to break her into pieces if the KAS members didn’t surrender and then stabs and kills Keito in the back in which said actions ended up mentally scar some KAS members. When the tides are turned against Talzo’s gang and when Zykan found out that Kiina is unable to fight, Zykan then forcefully reprograms her to be much more agressive by tearing her to pieces. In his third appearance, Zykan then leads a full-frontal assault to HAND’s base and kills most of the members (including Keito’s clone) except the leader, Yiel and forces him to finish the aforementioned programming. In the battle with Meta Knights where his second in command asks him to patch the hole in his tire to keep him from dying, Zykan instead gave him “The Reason You Suck speech” and leaves him to die. In the final confrontation against the KAS, Zykan kills one of his creations “Soo” because he felt he was spineless against the enemy. Remorseless and needlessly cruel to his teammates and his enemies alike, Zykan darkens the mood in an otherwise lighthearted webcomic.

Any thoughts or objections? If not then I'll add this to the drafts

@ACW And btw, Since Kirby Adventure is a fanmade webcomic, Where should the writeup go? In Webcomics section or Fan Works section? If it goes to fan works section I actually have an okay image from him if you know what's happening.

@ACW Added and I think an okay image for the webcomic and that's where Zykan kills Keito. Here's the panel in question:

[up][up] Oh, dude, 19 upvotes (plus yourself) without any no votes is MORE than enough [lol]. Next, you provide a writeup for him, under 300 words if possible, then post that writeup both here and here. Then, this weekend I'll tweak it (potholes, grammar, etc.) and then Monday or so request it be added to the appropriate page (in this case, that'd be Literature A To F).

@ACW Btw, have you saw the panel that I gave to you yet? Its a spoiler but how was it tongue

Also, to answer your question regarding Miracle Matter....Tbh what prevents him for being counting iirc was the fight scene with Caiya and Kaxo where he got beaten comically by them despite he has so many forms so yea....I'm iffy regarding that guy.

Ah, so Miracle Matter may be a case of not taken seriously enough by the story.

@therealjackieboy: Seeing a good one or even a evil one who has standards like refusing to kill children would proof without a doubt that they aren’t evil by nature. However, the fact that they didn’t care about humanity until humanity tried to kill them, is more than enough for me to assume they have a moral agency. So I’ll give the Demon of Voramis and Lord Toramin a late [tup].

(Assuming the humans didn’t try to wipe them out because they ate their children or something like that. grin)

Now, for my issues with the other two baddies of Empire....first up, Mile Weissman. Here's his write-up:

  • Mike Weissman presents himself as a caring, heroic individual in a time when law and order have broken down, comforting the victims of a Serial Rapist and sending them to safety. In truth, Mike himself is the rapist, and uses his position as one of two remaining cops in Jefferson Harbor to cover his tracks by sending his victims up north so they can't identify his voice, later lamenting he couldn't see their reaction when they realized he was their rapist. Mike keeps up the façade of being a decent and moral person throughout his time with the other survivors, which comes to include one of his victims. As no one was able to arrest Mike for his crimes, he uses the suspicion directed at Shipley in an attempt to kill and frame him as the rapist, showing himself to enjoy being able to decide if a person lives or die. When Voorhees confronts him before he kills Shipley, Mike admits to intending to kill him and becoming the leader of the survivors, leaving the woman depending on him for support. He then tries to kill both Voorhees and Shipley, mortally wounding the latter. Despite not having the supernatural resources of other antagonists, Mike was no less a monster.

And here's his effortpost.

Mike is a...well, I'm really unsure on him. It's true that he's the only Serial Rapist in the story (NOT the only rapist, mind), but my issue is that...we don't really get a full perspective on how many women he rapes. The only definitive number we are given is two, with the implication that he has more, but nothing anywhere near solid. And that's my problem...I GUESS he technically counts on a technicality, but considering this is a story where mass murderers and pedophiles like Tetch, child torturers like Addison, and such are running around, with other minor villains attempting rape themselves, it's rather hard for Mike to stand out, especially when he gets, like, three paragraphs of actually being evil before he gets murdered.

Next up, Nathan Ryland, the ultimate Greater-Scope Villain of the whole story....write-up:

  • Empire's End: Nathan Ryland is part of the covert United States operations into studying the Source, a mystical force which turns people into zombies. During a routine exchange with an afterdead in New England, a confrontation leads to the private contractors being killed and Ryland being infected with a virus mutated by the Source, becoming Patient Zero for the zombie plague. However, rather than do anything to prevent the spread, Ryland instead looks into all the available research on zombies, coming to the conclusion he has been chosen by the Old Ones for a reason, to usher in a new age. To that end, he sends a medic to the Congo to have her silenced when she discovers his condition, resulting in the death of a soldier who witnessed it. When another soldier finds him eating a corpse, he is reassigned to observe the zombies, eventually going insane and dying. When he finally turns, he goes on a rampage, infecting and killing numerous people and causing an outbreak. When confronted, he shows himself to still be capable of speech even as a zombie, admitting he caused the outbreak, knowing it would end human civilization, simply because he wanted to see what would happen. Though he only appears briefly, Ryland is responsible for deliberately bringing about the zombie apocalypse and killing millions for a very poor reason.

And effortpost.

Ryland is as nasty as he sounds, and he does seem to have sapience once becoming a zombie, however, the thing that makes me hesitant on him is that, while it's stated that he still possesses all of his "mental faculties" as the zombie infection takes him, it's simultaneously pointed out that the infection is making his soul "hollow" and filled with darkness and evil, and when he becomes a zombie, the narration states that his soul has by this point left his body, leaving just a shell behind.

Not really sure what to make of this one. Ryland goes from an ordinary, is arrogant, jackhole to a lunatic proclaiming he wants to end the world just "to see what will happen," and it just comes off as odd. I can't really tell if the writer truly wanted to present Ryland as a pure evil monster who had been like that his whole life, and the narration about "hollow" and "darkness" is just descriptive writing, or if the writer was actually trying to convey that Ryland was being corrupted by the infection and ultimately has questionable agency. While others who are turned into...sort-of zombies seem to retain their faculties, Ryland is infected with a very specific strain of the virus, so....

Ultimately, I'm fine if these two stay, unlike Tetch, but I felt this stuff needed to be formally addressed seeing as the original effortposts didn't really go into the details.

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

Thanks everyone for giving my Oikawa post an [tup]. I'll try and have a writeup on the guy. Though they'll be no spoiler warning entries on this one...

Digimon 02 The Story We Never Told: Yukio Oikawa, the Big Bad of the story, was a member of the original Digi Destined who saved the Digital World years before. However, Oikawa's lack of friends drove him to become obsessed with returning to the Digital World and urged his former teammates to join him. However, his pleas fell on deaf ears, as his teammates chose to move on with their lives as normal people. Oikawa thus arranged a car accident that claimed the lives of two of his teammates, leaving their son Izzy an orphan. Oikawa masterminded the conflict of the story by corrupting young Ken Ichijouji into becoming the Digimon Emperor as well as creating his own Digi Destined to counterbalance Ken. When Ken pulled a Heel-Face Turn, Oikawa decided Ken had outlived his usefulness and killed him by frying his brain. Oikawa also allied with Eldritch Abomination Dagomon to build a gateway for Dagomon's forces to invade the real world, resulting in the deaths of countless innocents. Once the new Digi Destined outlived their usefulness, Oikawa forcefully reprogrammed them to turn on their human partners, even if one of them happened to be his deceased best friend's son. Not even his creations Arukenimon and Mummymon are safe from Oikawa's wrath, as he forcefully fuses their bodies to become an abomination, all the while insulting them as failures. Oikawa's endgame is to create a Floating Continent out of all the data he siphoned from the Digital World and crash it into the real world, which would create a reborn Digital World. Oikawa hoped to rule the new world as a god, disregarding that humanity will be wiped out as a result. Oikawa in this depiction is a Psychopathic Manchild who had snubbed his friendship and humanity to become a god, making him one of the Digi Destined's most personal and depraved foes to date.

Honestly? I'd say just to scrap all the Empire candidates and call it a day. A lot of important information was left out of these effortposts and from the looks of things, if a villain doesn't count due to moral agency problems, it's because they don't clear the insane heinous standard.

Yeah I'd be in favour of scrapping all entries as it seems that the effort posts left out the fact that all of them have issues.

Though at the very least Mike needs to go as we never get an exact count and since its a work with paedophiles and child abusers, that is not good.

I'd like to bring up Keter again for CM. Check this pos for context.

Keter already got 7[tup] and one unsure, but ACW decided to abstain because of the heinous standard. He said "Doesn't make a difference. Villains can be overshadowed by later villains. Abstain."

It looks like it has enough votes, but I was told that this was that it shouldn't be a problem for a fan work. Does anyone want to weigh in on this?

Clown Prince: Sorry, your proposal slipped by me. I... don't know about Keter. If we were to take this as a standalone piece I think he'd easily count, but if the story had to take the entirety of RWBY canon into account, I don't know. Since I dropped the show after episode 1 I don't have a good grasp on the heinous standard. I think I'll give him a cautious yes for now, though.
