Our various tropes about hammy acting, concentrated mainly in the Chewing the Scenery index, have a habit of attracting Zero-Context Examples, Natter, Bold Inflation, gushing, and possibly other problems. A discussion in the TRS meta thread regarding overlap concerns with some of these tropes determined that, to bring them to TRS, Large Ham would have to be cleaned up first—a daunting task given the 20,000+ wicks (as of this writing).

After some more discussion, it was decided that this cleanup will be started to help clean up not only Large Ham, but also the other tropes in the Chewing the Scenery index that deal with hammy acting.

So, without further ado, let's begin.

Can we start purging [character name as context] examples, or do we just comment them out? Also, is a character prone to yelling to make a point, or just in general make them a Large Ham? Because this is what I get from most quote examples.

Here are the following examples charged with the crime of being ZCEs and relying on Fan Myopia:

[up] I'd say comment them out for now—as is standard with Zero-Context Examples. I do not know enough about anime to expand them myself, so as is they will have to stay commented out.

Okay, I started working on it, but it's long, so I didn't finish it yet.

What to do with examples that are like this:

  • Work name:
    • Zero context example.
    • Well explained example blah blah blah.

If I comment out the examples after the ZCE, then the formatting will be weird.

[up] I think just comment out the ZCE sub-bullet. Tried it on the Wiki Sandbox + Preview Mode and it didn't look that unusual to me.

Oh no, I meant commenting out the ZCE itself.

So like this? Still looks weird.

  • Work name:
  • Fleshed out example.

Having both watched and read Azumanga Daioh myself, I don't think Tomo counts as a Large Ham outside of what's typical for a Genki Girl character like her. Chiyo-chichi, however, does count, and the example can probably be adjusted to focus solely on him, like so:

  • Azumanga Daioh: Chiyo's "dad," a large, yellowish-orange cat who repeatedly shows up in Sakaki's dreams, constantly speaks in a booming, reverberating shout that highlights his ostentatious vernacular. Fittingly, in the anime adaptation, he's voiced by Norio Wakamoto, a voice actor famous for his over-the-top performances.

Be kind.
