Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yes to Maktu, Nalavia, Mr. Bloom, Mongul, Emma, Joe, and Mccarthy. And happy birthday to Beast!

What's the work?

Ninjago is one of LEGO's longest running toylines, starring a team of Technicolor Ninjas with elemental powers as they fight evil. We've pretty much gotten everyone who could count from the original show—mir and I are waiting for the first season of the new sequel to finish up in October for two more sure-fires—but I decided to look into some supplementary material.

The Splinter in the Blind Man's Eye is an unofficial "novel", with chapters sporadically tweeted out by one of the show's creators. It's described as "could-be canon" and takes place some time after Season 10, exploring the fates of Nadakhan's Sky Pirates after they were released from their prisons in the Dark Island canon comics.

To be upfront, the story isn't done. But the latest chapter was released a year ago; there's another unofficial "book", Way of the Departed, that the creator seems more interested in completing; and one of the co-writers of the project apparently turned out to be a massive piece of shit, so I don't think it's going to be finished. At least for a while.

With that said, onto the plot! Now, for those of you who have watched the show, here's a deep cut: do you remember that one Villain of the Week from those guys who wrote destiny? That guy who was helping Morro?

    Who is Fenwick?
  • The head writer of the Cloud Kingdom, whose inhabitants are believed responsible for controlling destiny (before anyone asks whether this affects agency for the current listed characters, the sequel show has retconned this so that Cloud Kingdom only thinks they control destiny; everyone else sees them as blowhards that are just frighteningly good but not always perfect at predicting things). He used to rule alongside his brother Quanish, but they came to a disagreement over free will—Quanish thought the people should have a choice, while Fenwick wanted control. He cast his brother out, breaking his mind out of spite; Quanish is left to wander Ninjago for a thousand years, tormented by his fractured thoughts and memories until he finally dies and finds peace.

  • Then comes season 5. This ghost guy, Morro, wants to release his master, the Preeminent, to "curse" the multiverse. To do so, he needs an item from the Cloud Kingdom. The Ninja get there first and meet Fenwick, who locks them in a room with a savage beast named Nimbus. Morro has agreed to spare Fenwick his queen's wrath if he helps them out, and he brings them to the item.

  • Fortunately, Fenwick's apprentice, Nobu, isn't okay with selling out existence. He grabs the scroll that controls Fenwick's destiny and changes it so that Nimbus attacks him instead. That's the last we see of him in the show, but in the story, we see Fenwick making a mad dash to where the other destiny scrolls are kept. Realizing he's about to get booted from Cloud Kingdom, he grabs a few more scrolls—Nimbus, the pirates, and the sorcerer Clouse—and some blank papers just in case. Sure enough, Nimbus attacks before he can write anything, and both fall into Ninjago.

  • Fenwick gets Nimbus under control and begins planning to escape this banishment. First, he establishes a cult for himself; making a base at the top of a massive, treacherous mountain range, Fenwick begins spreading the legend of "the Wishmaster," a being who will grant the deepest wish of anyone who braves the climb. Countless despairing souls climb up the mountain, to meet one of four fates:
    • They fail to make it to the Wishmaster, dying to the mountain's frigid cold.
    • They make it to the Wishmaster and have their wish granted—really just Fenwick writing in the blank scrolls to nudge their fates a little—before returning to Ninjago to spread the legend.
    • They make it to the Wishmaster and join him as his acolytes.
    • They make it to the Wishmaster but fail to meet his standards, getting fed to Nimbus. Fenwick indicates that most who make it to him meet this fate, with only a small fraction of pilgrims successfully joining—keep in mind that Lloyd sees dozens and dozens of servants scuttling throughout the place when he gets there.

  • While this is being set up, Fenwick begins plans to retrieve the pirates from their exile so they can serve as his muscle. When the Preeminent is destroyed sometime after Fenwick's fall, Clouse plots his own rise to power. Fenwick, writing in Clouse's scroll, has the sorcerer summon the pirates back to Ninjago and recruit them as minions in his scheme to empower the malevolence of the Dark Island—the half of Ninjago ruled by the Big Bad. Because of this, natural disasters pop up throughout: hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, with the lives of everyone in existence explicitly at risk. Clouse is defeated, and the pirates find their way to Fenwick's doorstep.

  • The Green Ninja Lloyd, because of reasons, decides to see this Wishmaster, joining up with one of the pirate' Morality Pet Clancee. Upon meeting, Fenwick offers to help him reconcile with his currently-evil father if he helps him out: go to Cloud Kingdom and bring back Nobu, so that Fenwick can force him to "fix" his destiny before subjecting him to Mind Rape. Once that's done? Fenwick's gone stir-crazy and power-hungry while in exile. Once he returns to Cloud Kingdom, he intends to use their destiny-altering scrolls to take over all the realms, so that all of existence will be his kingdom.

  • Lloyd refuses, so Fenwick proceeds to bring him to Nimbus. Having one of his loyal servants devoured just to show that he's serious, Fenwick then has the pirates—completely aware and horrified of what they're doing, but resigned to the fact that he's taken their free will—throw in Clancee, forcing Lloyd to agree to serve in order to save him.

  • ...And that's where the story's left at. Lloyd of course survives, and when we see the Cloud Kingdom again in the show there's a different Master Writer in charge, so presumably Fenwick's plans went belly up.
    Redeeming qualities?

  • Good intentions? Nope. He claims that taking away free will is saving the world from anarchy, but it's obvious he's a Control Freak; breaking his brother's mind when he disagrees is described as giving him "what he deserves" for his opposing "idealism."

  • Offering to let Lloyd go free once he does the task? Lack of care rather than anything redeeming; his narration makes clear that he intends for even the memory of Lloyd to be ground into that of a washed up relic once he gets back to power.

  • Care for his brother? Basically a Belos situation. Fenwick once loved him, but when they disagreed he didn't hesitate to ruin his mind and cast him out. He took in Nobu as his apprentice because he reminded him of Quanish, but he notes that he tries to "quench" the parts of him that are too like his brother, and, again, intends to perform a similar Mind Rape once he gets his hands on him for his betrayal. Any love is a flimsy pretense that has long been crushed, as he values something obedient to him more than the actual person.
He had only taken on the boy as his apprentice because he reminded him of his own brother when he was young. But Nobu had quickly shown himself to be more like Quanish than was advantageous. He thought had that he had quenched that part in the boy... If he could just get to his scroll and get someone to correct it, this would all be fine. And then he would discipline Nobu adequately... like he had his brother.
He was soft and felt people should be free to forge their own path... Create their own destiny. But people are weak minded and weak willed. They need to be governed. There needs to be a master plan for them or everything will descend into anarchy and chaos. The bigger picture is greater than that of the individual, and that is why I had to get rid of him. I banished him from our Kingdom and bent his mind. He was my brother and I loved him once, but Quanish was an idealistic fool and he got what was coming to him.
    Heinous enough?
  • To recap the current characters:
    • The Overlord and the Omega: Omnicidal Maniacs and god-like beings far and above everyone else.
    • The Iron Baron: Leader of a massive tribe of Mad Max-style raiders with an industry of murder and enslavement of dragons.
    • Vex: Random guy who befriends an amnesiac demigod and manipulates him to take over a kingdom; causes an eternal winter and crushes dissidents in a 6 decade reign, notably trying to freeze one tribe to death.
    • Vangelis: Has a magic skull that allows him to command an undead army, which he uses to enslave and nearly massacre two large tribes, all while building an army for the Overlord's destructive conquest.
    • Hazza D'ur: Magic skull that can't do anything on its own, but empowers Vangelis to do all his stuff.
    • Kalmaar: King of Atlantis who gains control of a storm god to drown the surface world.
    • Mogra: Run of the mill warlord who suicide bombs a village.

  • As ruler of the Cloud Kingdom, Fenwick theoretically had control over everything—the show indicates the writers are sworn to neutrality in deciding fate, so even if he controls everything he'd be hamstrung from doing any major damage by his people's customs, but it's still a lot of power. That said, once he evolves into true, megalomania rather than just backstabbing cowardice, he doesn't have that anymore. He's just some asshole with a few scrolls to control a couple of villains, along with a few blanks to nudge people's fates a bit. With that, he builds himself up as a nasty cult leader and serial killer that gets up to much more visceral, Darker and Edgier crimes than the villains of the show. He lures countless people up the mountain to either fail and freeze to death, not meet his standards and be graphically ripped to shreds, or lose their free will and (in the case of the pirates) be forced to feed a friend to the beast.

  • Plus, he's got a history of Mind Rape against his own brother with the intent to repeat it (a unique crime by the series' standards), and access to Clouse's scroll. Admittedly, the only thing we know for sure is that he influenced him to retrieve the pirates from exile; we don't know if Fenwick influenced his whole plot to destroy the world. Buuut I feel comfortable saying he probably could have done something to prevent it. Like. You know. Not providing Clouse with minions that prove invaluable in creating disasters that threaten thousands.

  • As for others:
    • Clouse is easily bad enough, but he grieves for his pet serpent. That said, the sequel show has the afterlife merged with the real world—go with it—so if he ever reappears as an omnicidal threat again, I could see him getting over that.
    • The Preeminent's plan to "curse the realms" is way too vague to be heinous enough, while Morro has a Heel–Face Turn.

I will note that I'm not 100% sure where Fenwick would go.

  • This is, again, a completely unofficial work. It's written by the show's creator, but with no involvement from LEGO. Another of the show's writers called it "cool fanfiction."
  • On the other hand, it's still written by one of the show's creators, with the intent to be canon-compliant. That gives it a good bit of authenticity.

I'm fine with wherever it goes, the fan works page or a Ninjago page, but I just wanted to make that clear.

[up][up][up][up]We have a setting where the worse villains are predatory warlords, rapists or raiders who purposefully let zombies loose on settlements.

In this series, simply gunning down innocent people is pretty low on the totem pole of evil.
