A thread to discuss everything about the Predator franchise.

A New Predator Movie Is in the Works

Apparently the Predator franchise doesn’t bleed because you just can’t kill it. Despite a disappointing fourth entry in 2018, 20th Century Studios is looking to bring the sci-fi action franchise back to life with a mysterious fifth installment.

Deadline reports that Dan Trachtenberg is in talks to helm a fifth Predator with a script by Patrick Aison. Trachtenberg is best known for helming 10 Cloverfield Lane, but also directed the pilot of Amazon’s The Boys and the VR episode of Black Mirror, “Playtest.” Aison is a writer-producer with credits on Wayward Pines, Jack Ryan, and Treadstone.

There are no details on what approach this entry is taking with the franchise but Deadline says it’s unlikely to continue the story of the 2018 film, which ended with humanity acquiring the same technology as the Predators.

A bit more details about the upcoming movie:

Predator 5 will be set in the past (finally!) where it will focus around Native Americans before the territories were taken by the American settlers, featuring a First Nations cast.

So first nations people vs predators ?

Sounds interesting. Don't think we've done a film set in the past yet.

[up] That sounds like a concept that could be really good or really bad depending on the execution. I hope it's the former.

So is this going to count as a Disney movie?

The comics have done plenty of Predator stories set in distant pasts.

Wonder if it'll have the ancestors of Billy in there.

Could be a super interesting concept. Given the track record of... everything, however. Can't say I'm genuinely enthused.

Sounds like an interesting premise. I mean there's no way this can be worse then the last Predator..... Right?

As a side note am I the only one who really likes 2? I know when it first came out it wasn't well received, but I think it's better then the other sequels.

I recall there were fan-films about Predators fighting either Vikings or knights, plus Dan Trachtenberg pretty much started off as a fan-filmmaker himself (*cough cough* Portal *cough cough*), equals an experiment worth seeing where this goes.

(If this works out, I can't help but wonder if they'll try a similar approach with an Alien movie. And maybe we can get a proper Alien vs. Predator movie.)

[up][up] I think that's the near-universal consensus? "Probably not as good as one but the only sequel to be anything resembling good" plus its additions to the lore are pretty amazing.

I remember one compliant of the second movie was that the predator's design was racist but I don't see it.

[up][up]Pretty Much. At the very least it's way better then the garbage we got later.

Predators wasn't too bad but I do think it's basically more of a remake of the first movie.

I really like Predator 2 and Predators. I think they're fun movies and manage to add new twists to make them interesting. It's the 2018 film I think is a flaming pile of garbage.

And while I don't think the Predator design in the second film is particularly problematic, I will say it features... questionable depictions of the gangsters. "Fuckin' voodoo magic" and all that...

My ranking would be:

  • Predator: The classic.
  • Predator II: Inferior to the original but I like the idea of setting it in the "urban jungle" rather than just redoing the first movie. Characters are pretty good. Solid film.
  • Predators: The setting had potential and there's an atmosphere, but I found all the characters incredibly bland.
  • Shane Black's The Predator: It's dogshit.

Honorary shout-out to Predator: Dark Ages, which pioneered the whole "let's make a Predator period piece" that everybody (me included) craves:

While being a short the parameters are different I would probably rank it above both the last two movies.

Predator, AVP 1, and Predators are all great at what they're each trying to do.

Predator II's problem is besides Danny Glover being awesome and the Xenomorph Easter egg, it's just very bland.

The Predator has an autistic child plot device that is unforgivable but it's better than...

AVP 2, because its default light setting is way too damn dark.

Predator 2 was the first movie I saw in the series, when I was way too young to watch it so it's always had a special place for me. The original is a near perfect movie. I didn't mind the 2010 movie but Brody is badly miscast as an action hero. Didn't see the most recent one as universal consensus is it's shite.

Welcome the newest Disney princess to the family, because the House of Mouse has revealed the first details about Dan Trachtenberg’s new entry in the Predator saga.

Announced as part of Disney+ Day, Trachtenberg’s new movie in the Predator franchise—which of course is now a fine Disney property in a post-Fox-acquisition world—which shot under the preliminary title Skulls, will actually simply be titled Prey. Written by Patrick Aison, Deadline reports that it turns out that this time the Predator is, well, the prey. The new movie is set 300 years in the past and will follow a young woman named Naru, a Comanche warrior whose latest battle is a fight for her and her tribe’s survival when a “highly evolved” Predator finds itself in the Comanche Nation.

Prey is set to release in Summer 2022.

And the director is Dan Trechtenberg, who's also done The Boys (2019) and Film/10CloverfieldLane. So yeah, this seems like it'll be a big upgrade from the failure that was the last movie.

I do think that's the best pitch the franchise has had in decades. Cautiously optimistic.

I wonder if this is going to lean into a metaphor on the predatory aspects of colonialism. Shane Black's Predator tried that too but its other flaws kind of detracted from it.
