Wiki and Forum Policy - General Discussion

Go To

Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

Just a quick thought, on the page telling people what to do if they get suspended it says that it's fine to ask for an update on your case if you've not had a response after a couple days. Might it be worth changing that to a longer period of time? Not that I'm convinced many suspended people will read that far down on the page, considering how often not reading what's in front of them is what gets a person suspended.

Why do you want it to be longer?

"A couple of days" is open to interpretation. The only thing that should be changed about it on What to Do If You Are Suspended is specifying how many days it's ok to ask again. I also think anything longer than a week is too long.

I agree that saying specifically "One week" seems both clearer and more reasonable in length.

[up]X3 Because we don’t have enough mods to respond in that kind of timeframe.

If that's the issue, then I agree a week seems to be more reasonable and clearer.

A week sounds good. It is unambiguous and should reduce the amount of clutter posts, and at the same time make it easier for the mods to sift through pages looking for possibly unanswered cases.

Hey mods, remember the discussion we had here 2 weeks ago about the CM and MB cleanup thread notes? I started a thread for the matter of editor notes going on trope pages period, which was the original topic I brought up, and that didn't reach a proper conclusion. Just thought I'd let you guys know since this seemed pretty important, both for you and the tropers that participated in the discussion. Happy new year!

What is the policy on having a work's spoilers unmarked and having a warning that all spoilers are unmarked?

Gjjones and I were working on the Film/Labyrinth page, and it is not clear to me why the warning is necessary.

I didn't know where else to bring this up.

There's a thread specifically for discussing the spoiler policy.

Hey, can we get a little...insight into how the cutlist/video/custom title approval process works? A lot of things lately seem to be getting approved that...really shouldn't. The video rubber-stamping has been discussed at length, but we also just had a page get cut (since restored by Septimus) with no cut reason, and we keep running into that title-changing custom-title shenanigan. Can I just ask how exactly these things work? It feels like whoever's doing these things isn't paying any attention to what they approve.

Why choose Hedge Trimmer as the featured article? It’s not even a trope. (Also, it might warrant bringing up moving it to Administrivia, but that’s a discussion for elsewhere.)

If this is about Scarlet Hollow, I would like to know why it was cut as well, there seems to be no obvious reason as to why it was worthy of that.

Well, I can only speak of custom titles and cutlist. The custom titles have a list with checkboxes, you mark these which you want to approve and these which you want to decline then process a whole batch. The cutlist does not display when a cut was challenged, only the first portion of the page content.

The Custom Title tool doesn't provide a means to relay your intentions or reasoning like with the Cut List. I can see how random bad titles would be able to get through.

Is there a thread to ask about how the plague and the new vaccine is affecting the admins' plans? I don't want to make a pest of myself, but I am curious.

We haven't heard from the admins in detail but we are in regular contact with them and discussing what issues and enhancements to prioritize. It's a long list.

Okay, so discussion is happening. I can content myself with that. I'm picturing hundreds of anthropomorphic petitions all doing the Potty Dance in front of a dozen outhouses. I do not envy y'all the task of sorting them all out.

Horrible.Lets Play was recently cut without the consensus of the thread SBIH Cleanup Thread. To avoid something like this happening in the future, I'd like to please request that the mods not cut pages in the Horrible namespace before making sure the thread reached that decision. Would that be okay?

This isn’t right.

Two threads got locked because there were a lot of thump requests, and someone didn’t want to do anything.

They even said that if we “Bitch about this anywhere else on the forums“, we’d get banned last time.

So you know what?

I’ll take that chance.

I’ll fight for it.
