I believe we should not use Essential Madness nor Crazy Awesome.

A name crowner would seem to be in order.

Personally I'd tend to think that the well has been rather poisoned for Crazy Awesome as a name due to the misuse.

It presumably got downvoted because of the "keep the definition as-is" part, not the "rename" part.

It's the "presumably" I have a problem with. Crowners should not require interpretation of the votes. They should be clear-cut, and if they're not, then the crowner can be run again with better wording.

In this case, it's clear-cut that we should not have both a Crazy Awesome and an Essential Madness trope. The ambiguity is the name. There's no need to run the same crowner again (with better wording), we can just run an alt-names crowner with Crazy Awesome and Essential Madness as options, among any others we can think of. And yes, I do agree that Crazy Awesome will likely be downvoted—I plan to do so myself. But then it will be a clear vote instead of requiring some interpretation.

Aaaand [nja]'ed twice.

A name crowner is fine with me.

Do we have a better word to use other than "awesome"? I worry that will cause users to gush about characters they like.

"Effective"? "Competent"?

[up] Crazy Equals Competent??? I'm not to thrilled about that one, but it's an idea.

I also like Success Through Insanity. I like that it specifies that the success is because of the insanity, not despite it.

Crazy Effective might be another option.

Not a big fan of Crazy Effective, if only because it has a similar problem to the current name (albeit somewhat less so): using "Crazy" in that way makes it sound like it's modifying the word "Effective", not the character the trope applies to.

Crazy Effective has the same "crazy as an intensifier" problem.

Edit: Never mind what was originally in this post. I didn't see that both Essential Madness and Crazy Awesome were already on the new crowner; some of the options weren't showing up. Mods, please ignore the crowner hook request for this post.

Edit: I added some of the options that were posted above, as well as some others.

Another edit: Just to double check, we're dropping the YMMV aspect and having the merged trope be objective, right? The YMMV aspect of Crazy Awesome (fans liking the character) is why I called it The Same, but More Specific to Essential Madness, especially since plenty of Audience Reactions already cover positive reception from fans. That was why I proposed merging Crazy Awesome (which is YMMV) into Essential Madness (which is purely objective) in my original post and not vice versa.

In hindsight, I probably should have used the wording "Merge into" instead of "Merge with" in the crowner, since that's what I intended (it's why I worded it as "Merge Crazy Awesome with Essential Madness" instead of "Merge Essential Madness with Crazy Awesome", even if that wasn't the best wording in hindsight).

Apologies for the unclear wording that was mentioned in Discar's original post; I've been sick pretty much all month, and that's been leaving me exhausted and disoriented, so my thinking skills haven't been up to snuff lately. For that reason, I'm going to let others handle any further crowner-related matters for this thread. I made the crowner when I did partially because the OP already suggested making one (and nobody else had made one yet) and partially because it's been clear for years that Crazy Awesome's name is problematic, yet the previous TRS thread clocked out before anything could be done.

Before I vote, I'd like to ask if it's possible to change or take back votes.

[up] From what I've seen, you can change your vote, but not remove a vote.

[up] That seems pretty flawed, if I may be candid.

Can I make suggestions, BTW?

[up] Sure.

But yeah, crowners don't let you retract a vote, only change it- I think so the number of votes stays the same? It's odd, but that's how it works.

Merge into Essential Madness: (yeas:9 nays:3) 3.00 : 1
Success Through Insanity: (yeas:8 nays:4) 2.00 : 1

All other options in red. At this point I advise that we keep the loser as a redirect. I don't expect any other name will have a come-from-behind win, but we need to see if the crowner is stable for three days before closing.

Have we considered keeping the Crazy Awesome name, but redefining the trope to make it more like how it's frequently misused? It could be a decent counterpart to Creepy Awesome.

[up] I pitched that but it was downvoted like hell on the last crowner, and even I decided not to vote it up.

[up] I'm not talking about the "awesome Up To Eleven" misuse, I'm talking about the "beloved by the audience because they're crazy" misuse, hence the comparison with Creepy Awesome. The way I see it, by both redefining Crazy Awesome and moving the current examples to a new trope or merging them with Essential Madness, everybody wins.

I could get behind that. Especially since Essential Madness is not YMMV; seems a little odd to combine them.

The problem with keeping Crazy Awesome is that it would keep attracting the same misuse it's currently getting. A rename stops that problem.
