So I decided to sneak my newly launched trope example onto the sandbox page so it'll be there when we finally update everything.

The third heartwarming example doesn't have anything to do with the work itself.

I know it's been over a year since the last post. Can I help out with this clean up?

First, nice job of clean up while maintaining the humor.

Saw several edits on the main page. I'd have fixed them myself, but the page is under administrative lock:

-in Adaptational Location Change, add period at end of sentence.

-in Bolivian Army Ending, who is "she?" Presumably Ebony.

-under Darkness Von Gothick Name — "Most of the original Harry Potter character have been given new names." It's "characters."

-the trope entry for I Love the Dead trails off in mid sentence.

-the quote under Crossover has incorrect indentation, as does the entry Take That!.

-Giftedly Bad and MacGuffin and Plot Hole and Random Events Plot are ZCE entries.

-under Mood-Swinger — "you wonder if shes bipolar." It's "she's."

-Writer on Board has a reference to another trope as a ZCE.

-The You Monster! entry is kind of confusing.

We should have a sandbox linked above to make edits like that. The idea was to get the mods to swap it once the cleanup ended.

Did some clean up on the sandbox versions of this yesterday.

Just finished doing extensive editing and clean up of the two sandbox pages. They may be ready to replace the old entry, but that's not for me to decide definitively.

Seems OK to me, though I don't get the removal of "Tara" in place of "The Author". Maybe it's just me, but the lore behind the mythical Tara Gillespie is as important to the story as the story itself, so just boiling her down to "the author" seems a bit weird.

There was an earlier thread at ATT for this idea regarding the webcomic “Housepets.”

While not technically wrong, the idea of continually referring to the comic creator by first name in the trope entries was considered to be in less than good taste. At the time, I got support to change it. Maybe this example is different?

TBH, I also often felt confused while reading the entries, thinking Tara was a character. My thought was that this would make things clearer.

That was the thinking, anyway. I welcome further discussion on the idea, and thanks for bringing it up.

Some thoughts on other things:

-I actually haven’t read the fanfic in question, but most things I corrected seemed sufficiently self-evident that I felt comfortable doing so. If I missed the mark on anything, feel free to correct stuff that looks like a bad guess.

-Given this, there were some commented-out ZCE entries that seemed valid, but I had no idea how to expand them, so I left them alone. If you’ve got enough background knowledge to do so, by all means flesh them out.

-I left the Morton's Fork entry alone even though it rambles badly. It seemed to make the point and passed Rule of Funny for me. I’m fine if it gets changed, though.

-There were a couple borderline ZCEs which I left alone. I’m fine with any you think need more context.

Basically, Tara is sort of a character in a meta sense, because nobody knows who she was or if the story was one giant troll fic. "Tara Gillespie" would post long author's notes at the beginning and end of chapters, or sometimes in the middle of chapters. Her drama with her editor Raven, her obvious self-insertion of herself as Ebony, and the slow deterioration of the story's grammar and coherence really sort of adds a lot of lore to Tara Gillespie that you don't get when reading other fanfics, and if the story was one big troll, then Tara was a character created by the author as a joke.

The other edits seem fine to me though I might skim through later to make sure nothing important got altered.

Side note: You should read the fic. If the grammar makes your brain cry, there's a few dramatic readings on YouTube. I'm not asking this because I think it'll help with the cleanup (though it probably will), but because the story is a comedy gold mine.

Fair point on Tara — I can see the thinking here. I'm fine with you reverting anything you think makes sense.

And yeah, I really should try and read this fic soon. I've got a feeling this will rival Plan 9 from Outer Space in the "so bad it's good" category. Many works try to reach that hallowed status but very, very few succeed. This may well manage that rare feat.

Admittedly, if I look at it from the perspective of someone who hasn't read the story, I can see how the "Tara" stuff might seem a little odd. Maybe we can add a bit to the description to clarify that stuff.

Sounds like a good idea. I'd say go ahead and do what seems best, and if there's something you do that doesn't seem clear, I'll drop a question.

Anyway, added a few tropes to the sandbox pages. Will go back and look at the hidden ZCEs shortly to see if I can flesh them out.

Okay — I’ve read the story (and thank you for recommending this, as it’s a hoot and a half), and done all the sandbox editing I can do. There are still some commented out ZCEs left that may or may not be actual examples of the trope which I didn’t feel comfortable dealing with. I also deleted a few commented-out ZCEs that definitely did not seem like examples of the trope. It’s as ready as I can make it, anyway.

Far as I’m concerned, it’s ready to post up.

I’m fine with corrections being made if I’m off with anything, though — feel free to make changes.

So it’s been ca. 10 days or so and it looks like no further edits have been forthcoming. Can the two sandboxes be brought in to replace the current works page soon? Would be nice to have this project completed.

Let me know if I should do anything to help that happen.
