Does Not Illustrate: Our Elves Are Better

This is just three elves. They don't even look like they think they're better than each other.

Yeah, that's quite non-illustrative. +1 to pull.

The name is non-indicative but this is an Our Monsters Are Different subtrope — it's about the different types of elves in fiction, not about how elves are a Superior Species (see its entry on Square Peg, Round Trope). Given that, the image is illustrative and gets a keep from me.

Yet the Playing With page says it is about elves being the Superior Species, which its entry on Square Peg, Round Trope even notes. Maybe this should be taken to TRS?

[up][up] But this is part of the description before it goes into talking about elf types:

Elves are many different things to many different people, but it's important to remember the one thing elves always are: better. Better than you, me, and even other elves. Especially other elves.

They are also quite aware of that fact and will let you know it, again and again and you won't argue about it (most of the time). After all, they've quite often been around for a lot longer than those upstart humans. The flavor of this betterness will vary across stories and authors between all-natural, magical, or just plain nasty. Some of them might even be humble and will make sure you know about it.

Since this trope is about elves being portrayed or seeing themselves as a Superior Species, the image should be pulled for not being illustrative.

[up] That is not what the trope is about. From Square Peg, Round Trope (my emphasis):

Our Elves Are Better gets interpreted in different ways. One is focusing entirely on the "better" part, using it for Superior Species even if elves aren't involved at all. Another is that the title is literally about elves being portrayed as superior (or at least being smug toward everyone else), leading some tropers to think there is a more neutral Our Elves Are Different article out there somewhere (the Blue Rose article at one time linked to both Our Elves Are Better and Our Elves Are Different). Its own Playing With section describes the basic trope as "A race of different elves is superior to most inferior races." All of this ignores that the trope should simply be about there being different kinds of elves in fiction.

If you disagree, you can try bringing it up in the Trope Repair Shop, but that ruling would need to be made before we consider pulling the image for not showing elves being snobbish.

[up] I agree, the trope name explicitly gives the impression that this is about elvish superiority to other species, not "elves come in many different flavors".

Looking at the discussion, it appears that the page has been unclear on the description since 2011 (or even since before launch, but I don't know if we can still dig up a YKTTW draft that old). I get the feeling that the trope is currently trying to be both — elves as better than everyone else and Our Elves Are Different (which is also a redirect). Many of the posts on the archived discussion appear to be more the latter... I'd support a TRS lookover but I'm personally unwilling to do the legwork for it.

It's worth noting that the Everything's Worse with Snowclones page specifically points out the Our X Are Different family as an example of a naming pattern that actually works, provided that the word "different" is used. Our Elves Are Better is just one of many tropes that break that rule. (See the big list on Our Monsters Are Different.) It probably would be better if they were renamed, but it's a daunting prospect.

I'd rather wait for TRS action to determine the scope of the trope.

Is someone on this thread going to do the TRS legwork?

This is way past the clock and the consensus is to leave the pic in place until TRS does something with the trope. Locking up.
