I do recall owning a Garfield book with an insert near the beginning based around uses for cat hairballs. Alas, not only does my family no longer own them any more, GIS isn't turning it up either.

Do you remember which book it was? If it's one of the comics compilations, my library has those, at least.

Yeah, it was one of the comic compilations. Latest one we had in my family was #35, and I know the first one is not it. That should narrow it down.
Edit: Looking at a list online, I remember that we also had #7, #8, probably #13, #14-16, #25, #31, and #33.

I know you'll probably reject it, but how about something from SpongeBob Comics #7, just to keep the (hair)ball rolling? There's
an entire 4-page story revolving around hairballs courtesy of James Kochalka, who worked on one-page gag comics during the comics' run.
