Hey tropers, we are working hard on making consistent progress with the wiki and being better about updating everyone with what we are doing. Updates are listed under each staff member that worked on them. Expect to see more frequent updates on this thread moving forward. Please comment below if something was not fixed properly.

Note: Use Query Wishlist and Query Bugs for requesting new features and reporting new bugs, thank you!

     Releases from: 2020
  • We recently discovered that a non-US IP address was hitting us with thousands of SQL injection attempts, none of which succeeded. They did, however, put additional load on the database. This wasn't intended as a DDoS attack per se but rather an attempt to take control of the site.

  • The administrators activated additional security measures on our Cloudflare firewall that have had the unintended side-effect of causing frequent ReCAPTCHA prompts for users. We are aware of this problem and working on a resolution.

     Releases from: 2019
Apr 10th:
  • Improvements to new user registrations and the user experience when suspended or banned. See this post for details.

Mar 21th:

  • The adblocker bug (popup message) will now appear for logged-in users after a certain threshold of page views has occurred while blocking ads.
    • You may snooze the bug for up to 7 days at a time if you have contributed to the wiki (by editing articles) recently.
  • There is now a subscription option to use TV Tropes ad-free for certain periods (monthly, yearly).
    • You can use this link to access the subscription system.
    • Subscriptions use a third-party payment facilitator called Stripe. TV Tropes does not collect or store any of your payment information. You will be rebilled at the indicated interval unless you cancel.
    • Subscriptions are linked to your account. If you change accounts, or are banned, you will lose your subscription.
    • Additional subscription options are being considered or are in development.
    • The badge advertised as a reward for subscribing appears not to be working currently.
    • To unsubscribe, send a message to "The Staff" via our contact form. Additional cancellation options are forthcoming.
  • Users who received one year of ad-free usage as a perk for contributing to the Kickstarter campaign at the 25 USD tier or higher will no longer have that perk. (The 95+ USD lifetime perk is not affected.)

== END: RICHARD ==

== CHRIS ==
1. Enable caching system for server - If you are NOT logged-in you'll receive a cached page from the server which can be as old as 3 minutes old. Unless you submit a form then it will bypass the caching system. The future versions should cache trope/forum pages for everyone and then rebuild it only when something changes.
2. Remove unused pixels (ie: comscore, retargeting, etc.)
== END: CHRIS ==

== TOM ==
1. Fixed 'Avatar sharing bug' where users were able to share avatars with other users that did not have the 'avatar sharing' feature enabled in their account.

7. Fixed errors in the error log and slow query log.
8. removal of all anti-vandalism page-locking code.
== END TOM ==

Speaking for myself, for many other users on the site, and for the mod staff who's just as in the dark about a lot of them and inevitably has to face the wrath of dozens of angry users over something they can't do anything about, I feel like far too many of our updates are being pushed on us with either no or extremely little warning. The nag popup over disabling ads is just one: we had maybe two days' worth of warning before the 3.0 update hit, and Fast Eddie's resignation and Drewski/ITCDR taking over was, to my memory, announced the day of.

I can't tell you how to do your jobs, but personally, I feel like you'd get a far more positive reaction to most of the changes to the site that get rolled out if you'd just announce them a week or two before implementing them. That way you give yourself a deadline so you have more pressure to iron out the kinks before the feature launches (a troubling amount of major updates seem to have received minimal if any bug-testing, ensuring that the days and weeks after their release are spent frantically patching out glitches that really should have been caught earlier), and can also get some public feedback and a chance to address any concerns your users may have over the new floor plan, so to speak. It'd help build a better relationship between the administrative staff and their users, which is crucial for any website to have, but especially one as community-driven as TV Tropes.

Or, in other words: Suddenly pushing updates to the site once they're done is a surprise, to be sure, but with how error-prone they tend to be (at least early on), is it really a welcome one?

There's my two cents. It probably won't get you anywhere in today's economy, but it's the thought that counts.

There are ways to avoid the pop ups. I'm doing it with some common Firefox add-ons, used in a sorta un-intuitive manner.

Some people have already explained their methods to achieve the same effect, so all is not lost.

But I'm on mobile, right now, and haven't found any obnoxious ads. Just the super bottom banner.

There might be an ad whitelist going on, given the high amounts of ads for this site that I'm seeing here??

Personally I use noscript; it let's me block 99% of popups and redirects without blocking the ads themselves (FWIW, I've yet to see the "please whitelist" message, so I'd assume I've got all the right things blocked/whitelisted).

I attempted to whitelist the site on mobile as an experiment to see if adds have improved.

Within the span of about 10 page changes, I was hit with an auto redirect add that was shoving me elsewhere dispite the fact that i was in the middle of a long page of threads with no adds in sight.

You can imagine my next action. I'll have to deal with the nagging popup, but you guys should probably try to improve the "quality" of the adds, or at least not have redirect ones, or otherwise add something else akin to Imca's idea, one I support.

Alright, I completely understand not wanting people to use adblockers because the staff doesn't get paid for this, it's perfectly fine. However, I can't turn it off here. I did whitelist this site a few years ago because the ads on here were rarely intrusive. But then I went to a page and started getting automatically redirected to somewhere else and it scared the shit out of me. I've had to put TVT in my adblocker ever since then. Now I know this isn't the websites fault, you can't control the ads that show up here and I know you have no malicious intentions, but can you really blame some of us for blocking it with experiences like that?

I feel that at the very least, the notification should be a little less intrusive. Just speaking from experience, but the more intrusive websites tend to get, the less traffic they start getting. Especially since I've seen multiple complaints saying that it still pops up even without adblockers installed. Or maybe just make the box not as wide? (Or is that just happening because I have wide load on? I'm not sure.) Granted, these are just suggestions. I'm not about to force you guys at gunpoint about this. If nothing else though, I do have to stress that more testing should be done before stuff gets rolled out. It seems like every time something new comes out, I find myself here on the forums wondering if it's broken for others too and saying the same thing every time.

Honestly, the constant annoyance of the pop-up makes me less want to white list it. Especially since I know the ads are malicious.

#209: Mar 25th 2019 at 8:42:32 AM

Let's be completely honest. Who here really trusts or clicks on internet ads these days? Like I said before, I turned off my ad-block for TV Tropes and all it did was just lag the hell out of it. I use ad-block not only to improve my user experience but to protect my computer from malware and other computer viruses; most of which actually originate more from online advertisements than porn sites. The fact you guys essentially put up a paywall for such an inane reason really pisses me off and others from the look of things. So bottom line, although I sincerely enjoying being a part of this wonderful and amazing website, I not gonna turn off my ad-block and potentially compromise my computer's safety just so you guys can spam your user base with these annoying ads and "go ad-free" subscription banners. My words probably won't change your mind on this matter but I've said my piece.

I don't think clicks matter much anymore. They have better ways of assessing if they were seen and effective. Meanwhile clicks are easily abused.

I don't approve of the constant nagging either, given how much of a minefield it would be to disable adblock. And even if I do enable ads, load times are significantly slower.

I think it would be better to like put up a Patreon or Gofundme campaign as an alternative revenue source from those who opt out of ads on security grounds.

As someone who previously had a computer that got an ad that basically downloaded a virus by redirecting to its download from browsing TVT, I see absolutely no reason to disable my ad-blocker for this site, and the pesterbox really isn't going to change my mind on that. As Lunick said, it makes me less likely to consider whitelisting the site.

I noticed that once you do have an ad subscription, the only one to cancel it is by managing staff. Not via stripe. This is shifty as fuck considering that staff of this website has yet to reply to the bugs we've created (such as the fact they are not delivering the promised badge), there's no guarantee staff's going to actually action this in time should one not renew.

Furthermore, it seems when buying the add pass, you guys don't send and invoice. Which is kinda hilarious considering how not having an email crashed the whole process.

So, When do I get my badge and invoice?

Update from the devs: At some point today we expect some fixes to be pushed live, one of which is the promised "snooze" feature for the adblock message.

  • If you have edited the wiki in the past 14 days, you can snooze the message for 7 days.

This is intended to reward people who contribute to the wiki by improving its content. AFAIK, discussion posts, Ask The Tropers, forums, reviews, and such don't count.

The missing badges are in the development queue to be addressed, along with emailed invoices and a PayPal option for subscriptions.

[up]Ghilz, I've brought your concern about the cancellation options up with the devs. Edit: And I've been told that it's also in the queue.

With all due respect, anything involving money changing hands should be feature-complete on release. I think all of us recognize that bugs happen, but the mess with the ads/subscription system smells even worse than the now-common practice of having end-users replace beta testers.

Now that that's out of my system, it's nice to be able to snooze the ad-bug if you edit the wiki, but there are people who support the wiki without editing (P5, Real Life Example maintenance thread, etc). Any plans to help them out?

Also joining the horde saying that "every page" is excessive. Can the ad-bug be put to "1st of the day then every 5" or something similar? After all, how many people come here for just one page?

Be careful what you wish for, 'cause you might just get it all...

[up] You can always help execute the decisions made in those topics. For example, in Trope Repair Shop, you can work to apply the decisions to the wiki.

We've said before, and it's still true, that the forums don't contribute a great deal to the site in terms of covering its costs. The "business" side is great, and all contributions are appreciated, but we have to draw the line somewhere, and that line is editing. The articles are what bring people here, so improving them is what we are rewarding with the ability to keep blocking ads.

That's as far as we're willing to go for the time being. One edit every two weeks hardly seems like a big deal to ask for.

Can you ask Dev why the money features are "in the works" and this wasn't released in a completed state? This is entering some really skeevy territory of fraud.

Someone made a little boo-boo with the Followed Threads button, and it now directs to https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/'/pmwiki/thread_watch.php' (two different stray apostrophes) , which in turn gets me a "Page Not Found" error

[up] Already reported it.

[up][up] I get the frustration, but the payment feature works, so it's not fraud. Let's not go crazy.

I appreciate the addition of a snooze button for the Adblock counter.
