Ronan is given to melodrama, as shown by him basically having the guardians and Xandar dead to rights and launching into a "BEHOLD, THE GUARDIANS OF YOUR GALAXY!" Evil Gloating speech for a full minute before deciding to actually destroy the planet. I sincerely doubt he'd just arrive and bang the hammer on Thanos's face. Even when Drax ambushes him in the Dark Aster Ronan makes a point to hold him by the neck and gloat about his dead family.

He'd probably arrive to fight Thanos with a long-winded speech about the charges he stands accused of, giving Thanos precious time to figure out that he only needs to destroy the hammer and he'll be in the clear.

This is even assuming that he'd fight Thanos in the ground. In the film he explicitly warned Thanos from The Dark Aster he was coming for him with the Power Stone to wreck his shit.

The most likely outcome, with that in mind, would be a space battle between The Dark Aster (and Ronan's forces) against Sanctuary II (and Thanos's forces), and in a space battle the power stone is significantly less useful. In a space army to army battle, I severely doubt Ronan has any way of winning.

Ever since Infinity War came out, I always wanted to know what would've happened had Ronan not betrayed Thanos. He delivers the Power Stone to Thanos, expects him to wipe out Xandar... and he only kills half the population. I expect that Ronan would probably try to kill Thanos right there and then for not following through on his promise.

Or Thanos kills Ronan the instant he gets the Power Stone. I get the feeling Thanos was never serious about keeping Ronan around once he got the Orb.

Thanos might have killed all of Xander.

He killed all but one of the dwarves. He double dipped the Asgardians. He's not too stringent on the half thing as long as he gets at least half.

And why does Ronan need skill?

He just has to make his hammer touch the ground and he wins.

If by "wins" you mean "destroys the planet beneath his feet".

Which, when your goal is to kill a planet like Xandar, is very much a criteria for victory. Less so when you're trying to kill the person directly in front of you.

Guardians really doesn't address this, but there are two possible scenarios for what exactly happens when the Power Gem hits the ground.

  1. The planet begins exploding, but there is sufficient time for Ronan to board an escape vessel and get away. In which case, this would not actually end the fight with Thanos.
  2. The planet explodes immediately, killing Ronan's stupid ass and abruptly ending his reign of terror. In which case, the most Ronan can possibly hope for using this tactic is a double kill. Ronan obliterates himself, which may or may not kill Thanos as well.

I'm inclined to believe the former, since Ronan did not indicate that his plans on Xandar were a suicide mission. He seemed very sure that he would not get wiped out along with Xandar, given the threats he makes to Thanos.

But the latter may also be true, given that Ronan is an overconfident idiot.

But no matter which way you slice it, hitting the ground beneath his feet isn't going to win Ronan a fight with Thanos. To do that, he's going to have to hit Thanos with his hammer.

3. The shockwaves emanate from Ronan’s position so he lives but his ship and all communication equipment on the planet is destroyed and he’s stranded there like an idiot dumbass

Is what I assumed would have happened had he succeeded on Xandar

Also, does anyone else feel like the smart thing for Ronan to do when attacking Xandar would have been to drop the hammer out a window from orbit?

It needs to touch the ground. He does not.

It might’ve been hard afterward to find the Power Stone amidst tons of pieces of exploded planet.

I'm pretty sure Ronan wanted to see them shitting themselves in fear when he did it.

Or at least as many of them as possible.

...which kinda worked against him when one moron started dancing.

...heh, Thanos must have really thought little of Ronan's ass when he got beat by that dumbass Quill....

...then promptly nearly lost to Quill himself years later. Quill still sucks, but his ability to deal with dudes who should be able to kill him in seconds is impressive.

Well, it did have Strange do the same rewind on Tony that Thanos did to Vision. So clearly they remembered him. They just didn't care.

In fairness, they already used bringing back Vision in their Infinity War video.

Shuri rebuilt him.

That's one of the lesser HISHE in my opinion. I kind of feel they've been focusing on fanboy complaints rather than making witty but logical plot changes for a while now.

Oh my god, the Clint/Natasha HISHE scene. I felt it in my soul. So much yes.

Also, I love the tombstones.

  • Not Terrence Howard
  • Some Guy with a Patriotic Shield
  • Here Lies the Owner of an Ugly Van
  • A Man with a Fat Wallet and a Light Attached to his Chest
  • Robin Hood but Goth
  • A Fat Slob
  • Someone's Pet Raccoon Likes to Play Dress-Up
  • A Green Person Apparently Died Burning His Arm

There is just so, so much to unpack there. [lol]

Man, this video was therapeutic for me. Every part of it was spot-on.

Yeah. I really didn't care for it, to be honest. [up][up] probably put it into words but it felt entirely unmoving.

Even scenes that fit my fanboy nitpicking (like Nebula's failure to time jump out [which in the movie I assumed Thanos somehow jammed it... but it went weirdly unaddressed], or The Sanctuary completely failing to kill anything whatsoever, or Captain Marvel being so powerful that she really didn't need the Amazon Brigade backup) just felt like... sorta stating a nitpick rather than doing anything fun with it.

[down] Okay yeah, I did really like that one. Especially the schoolyard kicking after. That's what elevated it for me... it wasn't just Stating the Simple Solution, it was using it for comedy. note

We’ve already been over whether Carol needed backup

As for Nebula, I assumed that the malfunction she suffered due to entanglement damaged the device and that she didn’t have time to fix it before she got captured

Thanos was monitoring her, and disabled her the instant before she pushed the button so that Rhodey would time-jump away without noticing anything. Her device wasn't damaged, she was paralyzed and couldn't press the button.
