Food and Food Culture

Go To

So I was browsing through OTC and noticed we don't have any threads dedicated to food. I figured this was a shame since food is an important aspect of life and culture that helps people connect with each other. Plus, we kind of need it to live. So I figured, why not start a thread to let people here talk about food related topics?

I'll start things off by asking this: what is the most "disgusting" food you ever ate and enjoyed despite its reputation?

Personally, I've eaten things like organs including chicken testicles, stinky fermented tofu, and most recently durians. And I've enjoyed all of them. Especially the durian. Maybe I'm just one of the people who isn't bothered too much by the smell, but it really is just as good as its fans claim. The taste really is remniscient of almonds too. Now I want to try eating it in a cake or icecream.

I don't have a favourite kind of fish, but I guess the stuff I most often eat is any kind of white fish?

[up][up]Friday is our main fish day, too.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

I like tuna and salmon, especially tuna. In fact I like many kinds of fish (in general I am not difficult with food). But I would rather eat fish that is not endangered species. Alas it is not very easy to tell what fish you can eat in a responsible manner.

As for fish, always mackerel and tuna, especially tuna. My favorite dish with tuna in particular is tuna sandwich.

You know what, I know what I'm gonna have for lunch today. [lol]

I prefer salmon to tuna if it's cooked or canned, but I love tuna and salmon sushi and sashimi pretty much equally. Go figure. Probably something to do with the quality of the fish.

So as we all know, it's been a pretty tumultuous time. During these times, what Comfort Food (if you have one) do you prefer?

I know I've asked this question before in the past, but I feel it doesn't hurt to ask it again. Maybe tastes change.

Me, I still like simple fried rice with plenty of pepper and egg and ham.

Slaw's alright, though my preferred cabbage-based side dishes are sauerkraut and kimchi.

What can I say, I like fermented stuff.

Improvised ramen noodle soup (premade chicken stock, soy sauce, sesame oil) or gamja jorim (hot potato cooked with caramelized honey/soy sauce/sesame oil and sesame seeds on top).

As for candy, mostly chocolate or cookies.

... And that's called jazz!

Speaking of candy...something horrible has been unleashed upon us. If I didn't already not believe in gods, this would make me lose faith in them.

My comfort snack food at the moment is thin sliced salami (preferably Italian but often German). I’ll normally order a couple packs as part of our shopping order and then munch an entire pack in a single sitting when I just want something lazy to eat that feels nice.

That and mini gingerbread men are another comfort snack.

I dig sev. It's an Indian snack food made of chickpea flour. It just has a fantastic snack food feel and is crunchy and salty.

[up][up]I actually have a pack of salami in my fridge right now. Though I tend to not eat it by itself - I put it on crackers and with various cheeses.

Speaking of Filipino dishes, I just finished cooking up a batch of lengua estofado (basically braised ox/beef tongue stew) for the first time ever late last night. Hell of a labor of love to make (I started at 1000, but the whole process wasn't finished until 2130) but god damn were the results well worth the effort of making the stuff.

This got me thinking. Why is there only a Useful Notes page on French cuisine? And why aren't there Useful Notes pages on other cuisines like Japanese or Chinese? And German and Italian? There should have been pages like "Sushi and So On" and "Schezuan Sauce and So On", and "Sauerkraut and So On" and "Spaghetti and So On" by now.

Probably because French cuisine is more present in the western media.

But this is a wiki: feel free to start such pages I guess. But I suppose the French page was started because it was relevant to a work page, not because someone felt like starting a useful notes page.

My comfort food has turned out to be a mixture of granola and museli (it has to have coconut flakes in it) with Greek yoghourt and mixed fresh fruit. The mixed fruit combinations I use are: raspberries and blueberries or satsumas/mandarins/tangerines (but not oranges) and banana.

Is anyone else struggling with bananas these days? It's definitely getting harder to find bananas that aren't already going off even if they look fresh or even barely ripe on the surface.

I'm considering giving up bananas entirely, however. They're terrible for both the environment and the health of plantation workers.

[up] I know not what you define as "struggle" but personally, bananas are the bane of my existence.

(To the point where I find it traumatizing to even keep a few of them in my home for any longer than a hour or so...)

...

Also, you forgot the detail that bananas are only one plague away from facing complete extinction, due to how they have been manipulated by mankind in order to serve as food.

I rather stay clear of that and hope the land used to grow bananas gets repurposed to grow natural rain-forests instead...
