[up] I would actually enjoy an subversion, if not even an outright deconstruction of Harry Potter. There are many things in the Wizard World that are a bit iffy.

And, yes, I really like the Last Jedi (and MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, Evangelion ...)

I loved TLJ, but Harry Potter is so decidedly for kids that I'm happier trying to not force adult sensibilities onto it.

Well it started out that way, more accurate to say kids and later on young adults

To be fair Cursed Child is pretty much the last Jedi of the franchise.

As for deconstruction Harry Potter does deconstruct the Chosen one narrative since the prophecy only happened because Voldemort took it too seriously

A Harry Potter film or book that examined the structure of the setting to a fine comb? Sure I'd like that. A "Deconstruction" however would be incredibly boring and more than likely devolve into the common misinterpretation of the term.

At least withShelob in Shadow of War their was some pre established precedent (Shelob's mother Ungoliant was not a Spider but a primordial entity that could take the form of one). This comes out of left field

If there's a reasonable explanation for it I see no problem with it. Even if we've never heard of a Maledictus before we've never heard of an Obscurius before the first movie, either.

The thing about the Obscruius was that it only appeared in the last movie. It wasn't like there was a retcon where "X character in book 4 was secretly an obscruius". This retcon basically states that an animal that had a significant amount of screen time was really a person all along.

I'm more amused that nobody in the franchise, including wisest wizard of them all Dumbledore, animagus Sirius Black and world's foremost expert on weird shit Alastor Moody, seem to ever point out that Nagini used to be a person, considering that it shouldn't be that hard to figure out (given she maintains her same name as a snake that she did as a human).

The more I think about this Nagini thing the more curious I am to see how the character arc will go. Should she be an anti-hero or a straight up villain before turning permanently into a snake? I get this whole "Nagini was once a human" thing may sound bad on paper to some but it could turn out to be something worthwhile.

[up][up] It's especially weird considering that Dumbledore's going to be in this movie. Even if he plays a side role and doesn't interact with Grindelwald's followers, wouldn't Newt have told him about Nagini?

Well this was still a long time before Voldemort. Newt likely might not have known about "Hey, that wizard you told me about with the snake named Nagini? I met her."

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is absolute garbage. It's...I dunno, The Phantom Menace of this franchise. Or The Sting II of this franchise, or The Son of the Mask of this franchise. How many other delayed and really awful sequels to great works are there out there? The Scarlett of this franchise, maybe?

See, you say the Phantom Menace of the franchise in a way that implies you find it to be worse than the Last Jedi, which is just wrong.

Besides The Cursed Child is closer to the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Could we please not turn this into another Last Jedi complaint thread? It's tiresome.

Not to mention the fact that the lead protagonist can literally speak to snakes.

Also, doesn't this mess with the whole "no one realized a person could be a horcrux" thing?

In the Diversity thread, I posted on how for the most part, the text of the novels doesn't at all justify this twist/reveal. And how I actually think it makes some more sense how one of those LOTR games decided to have the giant spider Shelob have a "hot sorceress" form, even though in both cases, they are coded as animals with a certain evil intelligence.

However, I remembered that in the first book Harry has a friendly conversation with and frees a snake from a zoo. It does seem like Early-Installment Weirdness, but if JKR is going back to that framing, I suppose it's possible that all snakes are sapient/chatty. You just wouldn't know it unless you speak Parseltongue.

Hey, one thing I noticed in the trailer is that Newt's brother seems to be working with Grindelwald. At first I thought this was a little cliche, the favorite child turns out to have some flaws. However, when I thought about it, I think the twist makes sense. It's mentioned in the first film he fought in World War I. It'd make sense for someone who'd joined the British army to fight in a non-magical war to oppose the statute of secrecy.

The first two Star Wars were made for all audiences, George started to aim them directly for kids after ESB. In contrast Harry Potter was always meant to be for children and scaled to older teen.

[up] ROTJ has Emperor Sheev Palpatine. Your argument is invalid.

Regardless, going back to Harry Potter, I would wait and see how all of this will play out in the actual film before I start analyzing any Unfortunate Implications regarding Nagini. It may surprise me in a good way or a bad way. But I reserve judgement till we get actual plot points (be it me actually watching the film or looking at spoilers).

[up]Kid's movies have scary villains all the time. What they don't usually have is gore like arms being cut off.

And we've heard the "just wait for the actual work to come out" argument all the time. And the context always makes it worse.

Just look at Shelob. When the trailers revealing her came out, people defended the move with "just wait for the game!" And when the game came out...it was worse. It was so much worse.

This was tone-deaf at best.
