I do agree that "Trapped in an MMO" would qualify as an isekai sub-trope or sub-genre, but isekai is a wide spanning genre and it would a mistake to define it using only the current trends. That being said, while I will agree that Tanya the Evil is an outlier, the Reincarnate in Another World subtype will almost always tend towards the fringes anyway simply because the protagonists almost invariably wind up a lot more fully integrated into the setting than your average isekai protagonist. In fact I would argue that Tanya feels much more like an isekai protagonist than Ernesti because her previous life defines a lot more of her character than Ernesti's almost one note mecha-otakuism.
Fairytale magical girl school. Despite ANN insisting on calling it "Märchen Mädchen", the official romanization appears to be Maerchen Maedchen
Rare to see an adaptation of a work by a dead author
See, this is why I'm genuinely interested in shows like Made in Abyss and Ancient Magus' Bride. They are actually fantasies, instead of being isekai shows.
Huh. My sentiments towards isekai works these days are kinda similar to the sentiments I had towards urban fantasy anime once.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Technically, Alice in Wonderland is the first isekai work in the world of modern literature, influencing other works such as Wizard of Oz or Chronicles of Narnia and in regards to anime, Aura Battler Dunbine, Vision Of Escaflowne, and Inuyasha all count as well. The first example in Alanna though was Guin Saga, one fo the most influential fantasy light novels ever.
The key difference is that unlike modern Isekai which uses RPG world mechanics, older isekai used traditional fantasy or mythology instead
Watch SymphogearCute girls going to antartica. Got the No Game No Life staff on this one, so it's probably worth a look
Also, finally got a decent PV for Franxx. Getting Fafner vibes, personally
Looks interesting.
I like to keep my audience riveted.Okay, the Slow Start anime stuck out to me in the most hilarious way.
Just read the MAL description.
The selling point of this Slice of Life High School Anime and how it chooses to differ itself from the many others in its genre is that the main character is a year older than she should be for her class.
I am half-tempted to check out the P Vs to see if there is anything else that is special about it.
They really are starting to get to the bottom of the barrel in terms of 'CGDCG but with Y', huh.
It's been fun.Yeah, that is an impressively inane premise. The actual premise of CGDCT shows ends up being irrelevant in a lot of cases so I'm not particularly expecting the show to be bad, but that's not good marketing
Nothing of note in the promotional materials; it looks like a pretty standard Kirara series
As a Netflix show I think this'll be debuting all episodes at once?
Sequel to sin Nanatsu no Taizai. The deeply weird fanservice show, not the shounen manga. That one we've known about for a while
Why is it that the Summer and Fall 2017 pages are still red?
If I remember right there was a decision not to do those pages anymore. Personally i agree because the descriptions were always uselessly short.
Notes/impressions on the upcoming season:
Was not super-impressed by this one. Some neat visuals, but pretty typical writing. Ordinary school boy, emotionless robot slave girl, robots are people too, you get the idea
Citrus
So this is a yuri drama where a pair of girls kind of like each other but obstacles keep getting in their way. It's frustrating and a bit on the trashy side. Good news is that it can be fairly hot without getting particularly lewd
If this does well maybe we'll get a YagaKimi or AnoKiss anime...
DARLING in the FRANXX
Before you go "TRIGGER! Amazing!" I'd like to note that A) you probably don't like everything TRIGGER's donenote and B) this is the brainchild of some guy who's only directed idol anime before
So, this looks like it's on the slow, weird side of mecha shows. I'm expecting something more in line with Evangelion or Fafner than Gurren Lagann
Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody
The standard-bearer of isekai. Which is to say that it's not terrible, but it is 108% power fantasy and pretty tropy. Promotional material has been kinda ugly, though
Fate/Extra Last Encore
So, this thing. The games are noted to be Fate at it's most cerebral, and the anime has some of SHAFT's best talents working on it, along with Nasu himself handling the writing. Beyond that, I have no idea
The thing here is that there's a few different directions it could go in and they're actively avoiding telling us which they're planning to take. Between the title and Nasu's involvement I'm guessing it'll be largely original, but who knows
Gakuen Babysitters
It's cute, I guess. Shoujo, so expect a bit of a different feel from those other series about raising kids (which were mostly seinen)
Grancrest Senki
From the writer of Record Of Lodoss War, which might mean something to some of you (not me, though). So, fantasy adventure series with less isekai or RPG trappings than we've been getting lately, but more midriff
Hakumei & Mikochi
For our latest installment of "potatoes and gorgeous scenery"note we have inchling slice of life. Emphasis definitely on "life". This is absolutely a series where things happen, just not world-changing things
Houshin Engi
So we're getting a second go at adapting a Jump series that was never really a big deal. Apparently Shomei TV decided to do this if a petition got 10k signatures. This took over 8 years
So, 90s fighting shounen. Fairly goofy, few girls, giant feet. And there's a moomin in the cast?
How to keep a mummy
's cute, I guess. Probably shorts
IDOLiSH7
Generally considered one of the better otome franchises. Not actually a reverse harem unless the anime decides to add one
Junji Ito "Collection"
Various works of one of Japan's genuine masters of horror. How well this'll work out depends on both the story selection and how it's adapted, and the promotional material has me worrying about the latter
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san
Middleschool flirting. Didn't do much for me, but worth a look if you like that sort of thing
Killing Bites
The first thing that happens in the series is a girl gets kidnapped with the intent of raping her. Then she kills her attackers offscreen. This works as a microcosm for the story as a whole— super-trashy, but doesn't really show much. Like, the first fight is mostly talking followed by the protagonist winning somehow (the anime looks to have expanded on this, but it's still not brutal). This is for 13-year-old boys that want to feel edgy
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni
Slice of life. Has romance and comedy, but is mostly a mood piece
Kokkoku
Supernatural thriller. Also has a lot of focus on a genuinely disfunctional family that's not played as a joke. The manga can be kinda hard to follow, but the anime should take care of that
Maerchen Maedchen
A series about a magical girlnote school... from the writer of Mayoi Neko Overrun and Papa No Iukoto O Kikinasai. I don't know either
Said writer is dead, so there's a good chance the anime will make up an ending
Mitsuboshi Colors
The manga is pretty funny in addition to being cute. No guarantee the anime will retain this, though
Pop Team Epic
The manga is 4 panels of dada. I have no idea how this'll work in an anime (which looks like it'll be getting half-length episodes)
Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san
Bit of an odd one. The manga is kinda formulaic: Someonenote meets Koizumi, decides to check out what she's doing, which inevitably involves ramen (generally an odd kind), and food education ensues. The advertising suggests the anime will be more of a typical CGDCT series and I don't know how that would work
Ryuuou no Oshigoto!
I hear the source material is reasonably good. So it might be worth giving a look if you're not bothered by it being a lolicon series about shougi
Sanrio Boys
This is about boys that like Sanrio products, not boys that are anthropomorphized Sanrio products. Just clearing that up
Slow Start
It's a Kirara series
Sora Yorimo Toui Basho
The PV gives me the impression of a light drama, but I really have no idea what a show about school girls going to the south pole will be like
Worth checking out just for the staff, though— Ishizuka is an excellent director and the writer has done good work with her before
Takunomi
I guess alcohol and ladies are a thing now? The promotional material makes this one looks like a CGDCT show with an older cast, though
Toji no Miko
Now that the campus battle has been ousted as the typical power fantasy series by isekai we're getting a cute girl variant. But, eh, it seems fine. Nothing too fascinating but no red flags either. 2-cour, so we don't have to worry about it having been cut down from a larger vision (looking at you, Izetta and PriPri)
If it reminds you of Kan Colle and you don't know why, that'd be because the character designer did a lot of work there, including some of the most popular ships. Also the aradama we've seen so far looks suspiciously like an I-class so it might be intentional
Violet Evergarden
By all accountsnote a beautiful, well-directed story... about an emotionless girl learning to feel. Despite being apparently amazing it might be best avoided if you have a low tolerance for that archetype
Yurucamp
Iyashikei. Bit of an oddity in that one of the main characters is a loner and tends to get her own plot threads
If you've been following the manga you may have noticed that it comes with pages providing information on the places it's based on. These were added by the scanlator and probably won't be in the anime
I liked Kiznaiver and Ninja Slayer.
Said idol anime is considered to be one of the best animes released in 2011, so I do have somewhat high hopes for Franxx.
YagaKimi maybe, but AnoKiss seems a bit tricky to adapt in a seasonal format. At least not without some alterations.
Oh hey! I translated a chapter of that one a year or so ago. I didn't know it was getting an anime. Probably shorts.

Talent doesn't necessarily transfer between genres. Non Non Biyori and Sagrada Reset have the same director
I think they'd just need to rearrange some events? That's pretty standard for anime adaptations
Shorts is certainly how I'd do it (and what I'd initially expected), but it's being animated at Gokumi, who I don't believe have ever done shorts

I think Darling will be good (if not great), but I also think that anyone who's expecting another TTGL from it is going to be monumentally disappointed. Most of what we've heard so far seems to point toward it being slower and more contemplative.
Which I'm fine with, but the crowd who hated LWA because it wasn't Kill la Kill are going to return in full force, which is irksome (especially as someone who moderates a TRIGGER discord server =__=).
I haven't seen anything else this coming season that looks super interesting (except maybe that thing about girls going to Antarctica. Could be neat)
it's either real or it's a dream there's nothing that is in betweenProbably. I guess they could easily remove the arcs completely unrelated to Ayaka and Yurine (namely volume 2 and 6, and maybe 4), but even then I don't see a good stopping point if there's an adaptation before the manga is over.
…Anyway, I'll probably give Evergarden a shot, if only for the visual experience.

My watchlist consist of Cardcaptor Sakura, Hugtto! Precure, and Fate/Extra.
The deluge of isekai is one of the most irritating things about anime for me not because the shows are always bad but because they're almost always worse *for being isekai*. It always cheapens it by having the MC be from our world because it's purely there to be a power fantasy at the expense of having a main character with some grounded context in the world he's in.
"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"
Preach it, brother/sister.
Doesn't matter, Pop Team Epic will save anime.
