[up]It looks bigger with the coat on.

And yes, he does have some big shoes to fill, but I'd like to keep an open mind about it. He was great in Stranger Things, he could be great here too.

I mean, Ron Perlman kinda looks like Hellboy anyway

Having watched the first Hellboy on Netflix before it left it, I notice for the first time that HB had his hair in a bun.

Huh.

So I guess he always had enough hair for a mullet?

Hello guys!

Since this is a Hellboy thread I wanted to drop a question, in case anyone can help me out here!

Does anybody know which are the comics where I can read about the second film topic? Elfs, the king Valor, his children and the Golden Army.

Thanks in advance!

The Golden Army, and those particular characters, were pretty much invented for the film. The "elves" in the film were pretty similar to the "fairies" from the comics, though. "The Corpse" (included in the TPB The Chained Coffin and Others) is a good intro to the whole fairy subplot in the comics.

But the other fairy stories interweave with the main plot often enough, you kinda need to read all the TPB's just to know what's going on.

So... The Golden Army stuff, the King and the twins, and the elves themselves were not part of the comics? So far I had read that the film was not about one single comic, but a few of them. But I couldn't imagine that the plot wasn't even part of the comics at all! Really?

PS. Thanks a lot for answering tho!smile

First film borrowed from a number of comics. Second was essentially made up.

The second has a lot of themes and plot structures in common with Darkness Calls. The Wild Hunt and The Storm and the Fury trilogy (and in the foreword for a re-release of the latter, Mignola ponders if it was intentional or not given Del Toro and Mignola often shared plans for stories with one another). Like Golden Army, those arcs deal with a oncoming war between the Fae world and the human world brought upon by the decay of the former during modern age. Said Fae are planning to bring the war to the human world by awakening an ancient and supremely powerful evil that even they dread to use (the Golden Army in the film, Nimue tin the comic).

In both cases, the rebellious Fae are led by a Tragic Villain magic creature Well-Intentioned Extremist who despises mankind for what they've done to the world (Nuada/Gruagach). The Extremist begins his plan by murdering in cold blood The Good King of magical creatures (King Balor/King Dadgda) and taking over his place, then beginning his war.

The magical creatures are naturally opposed by Hellboy, who must also decide his place in the conflict since he's a hunter of his own kind. Both stories feature Hellboy considering settling down and leading a normal, happy life outside of these magic shenanigans and both allude to his royal lineage as the son of the King of Hell.

The Golden Army is essentially Inspired by… the Darkness Calls-Wild Hunt-Storm and the Fury trilogy of Hellboy.

The plot itself also borrows elements from The Conqueror Worm. Chiefly, The Golden Army and the Conqueror Worm deal with the same themes of What Measure Is a Non-Human? and both end on the exact same scene (Hellboy, atop a hilltop, interrupting Manning's typical "you did good Hellboy" to tell him he's out and blowing smoke at his face).

Hell's bells.

The new movie's getting pushed from January 11th 2019 to April 12, 2019.

Probably for the best since January's kind of a bad month for movies anyway, right?

It's traditionally the dumping ground for films not even the most shilling studio executive wouldn't pretend isn't shit, yes. With some good will you could read it as the studio actually having some confidence in it.

If this turns into a movie series, it's totally gonna end with Hellboy and a dragon trading haymakers.

Part of the trailer leaked on Reddit [1]

It's honestly a pretty horrible trailer, with an excessively poppy and energetic tone (what the Hell is that choice of music?). Let's hope its just inept marketing like the atrocious "Legendary AF" tagline.

I...actually like the "Legendary AF" tagline in a ballsy, badass, Refuge in Audacity way.

I mean, is Hellboy not legendary? wink

In any case, I'm not spoiling myself by watching the leaked portion of the trailer. Not only do I detest cam-quality video, but it's also a portion of the trailer and I'm not going to base my opinion on 5-15 seconds of footage.

"Legendary" is not the problem, "AF" is the problem. It's a bit of a cringey modern parlance that strikes the wrong chord, particularly when the Hellboy comics (or the Del Toro movies for that matter) never really had such a direct connection to pop culture memes.

The leaked portion of the trailer is also around one minute long and there's a full version online, which clocks at 1:41.

Going by the trailer, it's clear that this movie is stylistically trying to do it's own thing separate from the Del Toro movies, and I can get behind that - i'd rather this film have it's own style than try and ape someone else's.

Whole lot of easter eggs in there too. Im quite excited for the wild hunt, personally.

I actually think it's too close to the Del Toro style more than anything. Not feeling Neil Jordan's directorial hand as much as I'm feeling a echo of Del Toro's with way less flair and style. From the trailers it looks like they even kept Del Toro's more juvenile Hellboy and Del Toro's paternal Professor Broom (aspects basically absent from the comics).

Granted, it's a leaked first trailer, so early impressions and whatnot, but I'm hoping we get a more distinct second trailer.

Professor Broom didn't seem that paternal in the trailer; he seemed more jokey than the previous portrayal, and a bit younger too. Besides, Broom is Hellboy's father, of course he's going to be a little paternal towards him.

Broom giving the pep talk to Hellboy and then Hellboy saying "Some dads get their kids legos." upon seeing the Samaritan seem to hint at a pretty paternal relationship to me.

In the comics they have a strange relationship because Hellboy grows extremely fast, so they have a pseudo-parental relationship during his very early years but otherwise Hellboy seems to mostly treat him like a highly cherished older friend as seen in Seeds of Destruction.

[up][up][up][up] I know you meant Neil Marshall, but now I want to see Jordan's Hellboy.

“I would’ve loved to see Guillermo do his third movie and finish that story. But over the years it became very clear that wasn’t going to happen. About three years ago the producers, the screenwriter Andrew Cosby, and I all started working on this new story. Del Toro didn’t want to have anything to do with it, he wasn’t going to direct. He was offered to be a producer, and Ron [Perlman] wouldn’t do it without Guillermo,” Mignola stated.

“So we originally started trying to tie it to the del Toro universe and continue those movies. But once we had Neil Marshall, we thought, ‘Why are we going to try and continue that universe?’ Because a del Toro movie is a del Toro movie, and you don’t want to try and hand a del Toro movie to someone else. Especially someone as great as Neil Marshall. So that’s when it went from being this continuation to being a reboot,” Mignola enthused. “It’s exciting to have another director. It’s exciting to take another path, to take that material and give it another leaning.”

https://nerdist.com/mike-mignola-hellboy-movie-comics-exclusive-interview/

I thought this was interesting. I've always liked the movies, and finally pulled the trigger on buying the comics (omnibus editions), but I'm more than a little skeptical about this new movie.
