A Game of Gods Season 3: Terminus

Go To

There is a legend spoken across a myriad of worlds, a tale of a tower between worlds. Called the Tower of War by some, the Devouring Tower by others and the Tower of Gods by most. The story goes that at a time of great conflict and crisis, a great Tower appeared. A construct of jet black metal, it stretched into the skies to a height where none could see the top. And at the base of the Tower, a black and gold gate unlocked.

Here, the stories diverge. Some tell of a band of heroes emerging, bringing an end to dictators and those who would let conflict rage. Others tell of demons and evil beings spilling out from the Tower and covering the world in an eternal darkness. And others say that those who dared to enter never returned.

But all tales agree on one point. After a period, sometimes days, sometimes years, the Tower vanished, leaving behind a world forever marked by its arrival and legends in its wake. And the fate of those whom the Tower had swallowed was left in the hands of the Gods.

Greetings traveller, and welcome to the Tower. You have been chosen to climb its steps of black stone and seek the top where the Ruler awaits. Me? I am but a blind locksmith, forever cursed to lead those who would climb the Tower and explain how to proceed. At the top of this Tower awaits your reward should you succeed. Riches beyond your imagination, knowledge that surpasses that of the greatest thinkers, weapons that would pluck the sun out of the sky and treasures of technology that would make anyone a king of their world. And, should you wish to, a way home, just how you left.

Oh, do I sense hostility? Rebellion? Righteous anger, directed towards the Ruler for taking you from your home? Oh yes, you would not be the first. Certainly, the one responsible for your being here also awaits at the top. Would you like to strike them down? Take revenge for your treatment? Or take on the mantle of Ruler of the Tower yourself?

Yes, yes! For such is the nature of the Tower! At the top, your heart’s greatest desires! But to win, you must play the games that the gods dictate!

Ah, now you are listening? You wish to know how to play? Very well. You will climb the Tower one floor at a time. Each floor have the stairs to the next floor, locked. But each floor also has a black and gold gate that leads to a different world, locations unimaginable or locales familiar. From that world, a world embroiled in chaos and strife, you must locate the key that will grant you passage to the next floor. Will it be the crown of a king? The last coin of a beggar? The song of an animal? I will be able to tell you what it is, but you must find it by yourselves. And then you return here, and you can progress to the next floor.

A simple idea, but a difficult task. Travel the myriad of worlds that this Tower connects to, recover the keys and climb! Ascend towards the heavens, towards the reward that awaits above!

Climb!

Rules

First of all, please respect the forum rules and the RP subsection rules.

One character per player, please. We’d also like to keep powerlevels at a reasonable standard, but anything can be nerfed. Even if you think your character is too powerful, send them our way and we’ll discuss it. Rule of thumb, though: if your character can cause or fix natural disasters single-handedly in a short length of time, expect some nerfs.

Please keep to general R Ping etiquette. No ghosting (simply ignoring any attacks sent your character’s way); no autohitting (whether your character’s attack lands is up to the other player, not you); no taking control of other people’s characters, etc. Of course, these being etiquette and not laws, you can make breaches if they’re discussed with the other player beforehand.

The only real rule is that GM rulings are final, and must be obeyed, though if you have objections these rulings can be politely discussed. The GMs for Season 3 are Meanken, Makaioh and Lemurian.

Cool, I can accept that.

That said, I do want to point out that Minerva is, canonically, a former Pegasus Knight - it's mentioned in her support conversations with Catria, and a version of her from back when she was a Pegasus Knight is actually available as DLC in If (If, not Fates), and does have access to those skills, which is what I was using as a basis for including them.

I don't anticipate getting larger than Party anyway at any point, so the big missiles problem can be rectified right there.

As for the rapidness of the attack, I see no reason why it can't be slowed down, coupled with the fact it's probably going to be reasonably infrequently used anyway.

@Lem: edited everything in, except for the Mark of Death: in-game its range is eight metres and its point is that it's a second-line support ability. Is that acceptable?

@G Ms: The in-game duration for Fade Cloak is 2 seconds, and I see no reason to change that. As for Disruption Field, let me try again, then. It has a radius of 3 meters, always being centered on the caster, and a duration of 10 seconds. Let us say that rather than Entropy, it's a Spirit school thing. The magical energy the caster infuses into the area makes the air thicker and hard to move through and breathe except for themselves, reducing a living creature's speed and weakening them because of the greater effort it takes to breathe. How does that work?

@Rhyme: I will not argue that Minerva was a Pegasus Knight, but I will not accept that this means that she at some point in her original timeline prior to becoming a Wyvern Lord also was a Falcon Knight. The promotion path in FE 1/3/11/12 is Pegasus Knight -> Falcon Knight or Dracoknight, where Minerva quite clearly in canon chose Dracoknight. To stretch this to the point that she was both is out of the question, and no matter how much you attempt to drag in gameplay elements from much later games I will not yield on this.

I am willing to accept Strength+2, Tantivy, Quick Burn and Charm because they fit her canon classes and she had them in Awakening. You may additionally take Swordbreaker because that was a skill she could learn in her appearance there. Alternatively, you can forsake all of those skills and just take the innate Canto that she would have had in her canon appearances. I will not accept any skills that are based on that she appeared in If as a trading card exclusive DLC character where she was a Pegasus Knight and could potentially promote into a Falcon Knight and learn Rally Speed and Warding Blow. If you want to make an AU Minerva where she was somehow recruited into the If/Fates universe from the Outworld, became a Falcon Knight and learnt those skills you may attempt to do so in Renaissance.

This ruling on Rally Speed and Warding Blow is final, and I will hear no more of it. Now proceed with your edits.

@Deadbeatloser 22: Megadeth Party size is fine. Chris Yukine is Accepted.

@Vox: Then we are willing to accept quite a large range. How about 1000 m?

@Red Cedar: Splendid, splendid. Please add that to your sheet, and she's accepted.

Splendid, splendid! Minerva of Macedon and Theron Mahariel are Accepted.

@Vox: Wonderful. Please add the limits we've agreed on to the SU, and Xardas is accepted.

@biomechtraveler: Yes, Sayaka's healing and summonable demon is acceptable. However, we'd still like a limit on the number of swords and a better description/approximate level of her superhuman abilities.

Also, my own PC is coming up in the next post. Since I can't very well review my own character, it'll be examined by the other two GMs of AGOG: S3, Katarsus and Geek Code Red.

  • Name: Reimu Hakurei
  • Age: 18
  • Appearance: The Shrine Maiden of Paradise
  • Universe: Touhou
  • Personality: Reimu is is straightforward and optimistic. She's quick to anger if offended, but just as quick to offer help to those in need. Furthermore, she treats everyone the same way, and shows no particular respect or disrespect to anyone. She gets easily curious, and has no problems getting herself involved in other people's matters. While she's lazy on her off days, she's diligent in her duties as a miko, especially when it comes to youkai extermination.
  • Backstory: Not much is known Reimu Hakurei's childhood or what happened to her parents, and Reimu is not very willing to share. However, she's been the miko of the Hakurei Shrine for quite a long time, charged with keeping the shrine that sits on the border of the Great Hakurei Barrier. The Barrier separates Gensokyo from the Outside World, keeping the magic of Gensokyo from disappearing. Despite her young age, she's already been responsible for resolving a large number of incidents threatening the peace or stability of Gensokyo, and she's perhaps more well known among the Youkai that she is supposed to keep in check then the humans that she is protecting.
  • Powers/Abilities/Equipment:
    • Ability to Float. An innate ability of Reimu, it makes her capable of flight. However, it also makes her capable of floating away from reality, making her intangible. For some reason, this power has been dampened and her ultimate spell card, Fantasy Nature, will only render her invulnerable for two or three seconds.
    • Shrine Maiden Abilities: As the Hakurei Shrine Maiden, Reimu is trained in a great deal of powers, as well as close-combat and magical combat techniques.
      • Central to being the Miko of the Great Hakurei Barrier are exorcising, sealing and binding techniques that are most effective when used on magical and supernatural creatures, but also work on others. Of course, no seal or barrier is unbreakable and the strongest barriers take a long time to set up.
      • Communicating with the Gods: To any normal miko, communicating with the gods and borrowing their powers is key. However, Reimu does not have a lot of training in this department. Still, she knows the basic principles. With enough time and figuring out the rituals, Reimu can establish communication with any native god. As she climbs the Tower, this will of course vary depending on how the gods operate in any given world, and the most powerful gods will often refuse to communicate with a mortal shrine maiden. Given enough time and cooperation with the local gods, she can lend their powers in much the same way as local clergy.
    • Tools of the trade: Reimu never leaves home with her mystical equipment.
      • Most important are the two Yin-Yang Orbs, the objects of worship of the Hakurei Shrine. They have potent anti-demonic energies, but work well as magical weapons against others as well. In the past, they have been enchanted with communication capabilities (though not by her), and can potentially be made to work as such again.
      • Where Reimu is, her Purification Rod, an enchanted gohei, is never far away. She uses it as a conductor of her spiritual abilities, but isn't averse to using it as a blunt instrument if necessary.
      • Also, Reimu carries with her a large number of enchanted paper charms. These are used as magically charged projectiles that home in on the enemy, or to construct magical seals and barriers. In addition, she has a large number of Persuasion Needles, large enchanted needles that are used as slightly more powerful way of attacking.
    • Danmaku and Spell Cards. Like most magical inhabitants of Gensokyo, Reimu can form magical projectiles to attack her enemy. See also equipment. However, most of her more powerful techniques are tied into Spell Cards that take time activating and need to be declared out loud. A list of all her Spell Cards can be found here, but to keep it comprehensive they are all along the lines of using sacred barriers, paper charms, demon-sealing spells and her Yin Yang Orbs in more powerful single-target and area-based attacks. Spell Cards are spent when they are used, and take time and magical energy to remake.
  • Why have they been picked to climb the Tower?: While Reimu herself is suspecting Yukari has kicked her off on another unnecessary adventure, she has been chosen for her helpful and open personality as well as her renowned demon-busting abilities.

Mind if I put up a short post for the sayaka thing?

For Strength, when she isn't pumping herself full of magic, she is your average 16 year old, albeit a very athletic 16 yr old. When she goes full on magic steroids, she'd be able to crack concrete with a punch. Say sub-captain America levels. Speed wise, she'll be able to chase down a bicycle pretty easily. If she really goes at it, she'll be able to reach 20 mph for very short sprints- it'll tire her out to the point where she'll need a nice long breather after that.

As for swords- I'm not too sure why you want a control on how many swords she can produce. She can only ever wield two at the same time- she can't cause swords to rain down on people if that's what you are scared of. She can throw them though. If you really want a definite limit to the number of swords she can whip out from her cape before expiring, I'd say around 200.

on second thought reserving a post is a bad idea because i can't preview it

So here it is.

There goes tales of a grand, powerful hero. The king of heroes himself, able to command the might of all others. Born of the Gods themselves, this man is the epitome of perfection… all but in mind, for he is an arrogant, violent, and cruel leader. Wreathed in golden armor, and wielding the mightiest of all blades, this man seeks to bring the world back to the state it was in, in his prime. A world where the strong prevail.

Unfortunately this isn't that Gilgamesh.

  • Name: Gilgamesh
  • Age: Unknown, though definitely an adult.
  • Appearance: While his appearance changes subtly with every game he’s seen in, this is the general appearance he’ll take here.
  • Universe: Final Fantasy (it’s the same one in every game he appears in)
  • Personality: The first thing that must be stated is that Gilgamesh is a complete and utter idiot. He’d been fooled into many things, on one occasion siding with the villainous Exdeath simply because he thought he was the hero of his realm. He’s easily convinced that a replica of a weapon is the real deal, and will only realize this once it's too late, as seen by his inability to differentiate the legendary blade, the Excalibur, from its worthless mimic, the Excalipoor. In at least one case, the man aided in an investigation of missing weapons ‘’he himself had stolen’’, believing that he earned those weapons, rather than stole. Despite his bizarre actions, and his often misguided allegiances, Gilgamesh is not truly “evil”. He often sides himself with the heroes just as much as the villains, upon realizing he was tricked or fooled, and he does have a sense of morality, even if it’s a bizarre sense. Gilgamesh is a very “bravado” man, and is very well-spoken, almost too much; usually using overtly long or archaic phrases in his speech. Despite being a powerful warrior in his own right, Gilgamesh isn’t afraid to flee to fight another day, or even play a bit dirty, often faking defeat before getting back up for a second wind. One of Gilgamesh’s most misunderstood traits, however, is his obsession with weapon collecting. Gilgamesh has amassed a giant collection of weapons, some being incredibly powerful, and yet he still seeks the weapon Excalibur, despite already possessing even more powerful weapons. The reason he does this is unknown, but it is possible he needs this to leave whatever dimension he’s stuck in. Overall, Gilgamesh is a foolish warrior with something resembling a good heart in there, even if he does do some bizarre things.
  • Backstory: While Gilgamesh’s true past is unknown, his first ever appearance has him working under the evil Exdeath, as his right-hand man. It was obvious that his reason for joining him wasn’t just to be evil; rather he believed Exdeath to be the “hero” of his world, and sought to help him. Gilgamesh fought against a group of four brave Warriors of Light time and time again, but failed each time. Eventually, however, he was banished to the Void for his incompetence, where he was eventually found by said warriors. Seeing no way to escape, and finding the heroes under attack by an incredibly powerful beast, Gilgamesh seemingly sacrificed his life… but in reality, he was banished from his home dimension, and sent to wander the world between dimensions, travelling worlds for the rest of his life. He’s had many different encounters with others, many battles, and many failures, but this time, he’s appeared to be taken to a place unlike any other...
  • Powers/Abilities/Equipment: Gilgamesh has a wiiiiide variety of tools at his disposal, and isn’t afraid to show them
    • Weaponry: Gilgamesh is able to use various blades, blunt weapons, and even firearms, although he’s poor with the latter. Where he keeps them is unknown, but he can seemingly pull them out of absolute nowhere. While he seems to possess many legendary artifacts, most of them are mere fakes, although a blade is still a blade in the end. Every now and then, however, the blade IS the real deal…
      • Masumune: An incredibly sharp katana with a deadly range, The Masamune is a reliably powerful weapon, able to slash at foes from a safe distance, and even slash across multiple targets, should they be close enough.
      • Wyrmhero Blade: An incredibly heavy, incredibly powerful blade, said to have fallen many dreadful beasts. Despite its powerful name, there’s no magic to it, it’s simply a well-made blade.
      • Zantetsuken: The blade of the great god Odin. This blade is death; any being it cuts through will die, guaranteed. However, as only Odin can truly wield it, Gilgamesh can't harness its true power. As such, this blade only has an unbelievably sharp edge, and that's only if Gilgamesh puts incredible focus into a single attack.
      • Excalipoor: An imitation of the mighty Excalibur, Excalipoor is an incredibly dull blade, and nothing can ever fix this. Even so, Gilgamesh believes it to be the great Excalibur, initially, anyway.
    • Magic: Gilgamesh possesses a surprisingly wide variety of spells, although they’re still not as mighty as his arsenal of weapons. Despite his prowess, he can only pull off so many spells within a battle before he “runs out” of magic. Among these are;
      • Blind: Gilgamesh emits a bright light to blind the enemy for a moment.
      • Time Slip: The enemy is slowed down, and his mind grows sluggish for a moment. Has a long windup.
      • Death Claw: Gilgamesh’s hand grows massive claws, and he rakes the foes savagely. The attack itself is deadly powerful, and can even paralyze a foe for a finishing strike, but it’s a slow attack, and easily avoided.
      • Aera: A strong gust of wind billows from behind Gilgamesh, strong enough to push back or even throw the unwary off their feet.
      • Goblin Punch: A simple punch. However, if the foe is on equal footing with Gilgamesh, the power of it increases drastically.
      • Missile: Less of a spell, and more of an actual rocket launcher that he calls out like a spell. None the less powerful.
      • Self Destruct: Gilgamesh causes a powerful blast of energy radiating from him, horribly damaging a target, but at such a heavy cost of energy that Gilgamesh is likely to take himself out of comission for a good day. He could up the power even more, but too much, and the drawback could be lethal.
    • Morphing Time: When Gilgamesh deems it necessary, he can morph his body into a far more powerful one, growing even larger than before, while developing up to eight arms, with each one able to wield a weapon. While it doesn’t appear to have any severe drawback, Gilgamesh himself doesn’t use it unless he’s pushed to the brink without it, perhaps as a strange attempt at honor.
  • Why have they been picked to climb the Tower?: Gilgamesh may have been chosen for the sheer variety of his weaponry, or his great prowess with many different weapons and magic. Or maybe he wasn’t chosen at all, and merely chanced upon this dimension on his travels. Regardless of the reason, Gilgamesh wouldn’t dare back out of the challenge ahead, as for all he knows, the blade he seeks could lie on top of the tower...

Not sure if/when ya'll are closing signups, but I've got a certain robot girl in mind. Just need to finish refreshing myself on the source material to make sure I've got the details right.

While I'm contemplating, though: As far as I can remember, the character in question has a limited power supply, so would there ever be something equivalent to a charging station or really strong power outlet in the Tower? I guess I could have her limit her output and ration her remaining battery power, which would work especially well as a rationale for any nerfs...
