A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

I am very happy for Bong Joon-ho. Okja was booed at in Cannes in 2017, because Netflix.
He sure got sweet revenge.
Zendaya’s starring in an upcoming HBO series Euphoria. Of note is that her character’s closest friend, Jules, is played Hunter Schafer, who is a trans woman actress.
Just wanted to share this because damn this is beautiful.
The vid is a guy describing his own feelings and the people looking at him while he ponders whether he and his boyfriend should kiss in public. In a Scottish accent. Not sure the miscarriage part was appropriate though…
…15 minutes? Really? Also, even the main actress walked out of the screening apparently.

Pressuring people into doing sex stuff they don't want to do...
I'm pretty sure that counts as rape? Or at least sexual harassment.
Disgusted, but not surprisedSo yeah, I watched a short review of the film. Translation below (I just left out some incidental bits).
note
Yeesh…
If that bit about getting them drunk before shooting is true, then it most likely counts, yes.

How does that work?
I wouldn't really call it rape, since both actors were pressured to do that but...it's kind of confusing really.
Uni catYeah, which means they raped both actors.

It'd count as Rape by Proxy, and regardless of the exact definition it's horrifying.
they/them || "Forgive me, regent of queer amphibians" - Lt.BGobMaybe they should call it a glorified porno
"but is art!"-the director probably
New theme music also a boxI'd say it's more realistically a form of sexual harassment ("I'm pressuring you to perform a sexual act for your job" is basically the go-to definition of more extreme sexual harassment), and I don't know if that's a crime or just something that can be sued over.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Jason Mitchell was fired from The Chi following several testimonies that he was harassing his coworkers on the show. Additionally, some say that his behavior was known during the first season’s filming but the higher ups dragged their feet on pushing him out.
Amnesty International chastises censorship of the Elton John biopic Rocketman, including of gay kissing and sex scenes.
Trigger warning for discussion of mutilation, rape, and mental sexual abuse.
A review of the Netflix movie, The Perfection. This is, to put it mildly, probably the worst type of movie to come out in a post-Me Too! world.
It would be very nice if cis men writers could cease with turning to writing rape in stories for the drama over and over and over again...
On another topic, here's the New Yorker's review of Ma, starring Octavia Spencer.
In some ways, Ma is the perfect misfire for our cultural moment. It signals allegorical importance. It makes a grand judgment about representation. It exploits the vogue for elevated versions of so-called populist genre fare. It makes all of these virtuous gestures, and, because it is so busy making a spectacular event of its existence, it neglects to attend to its meaning.
If it means anything, one of the writers of The Perfection is a woman.

Welp, may have needed more.
Yeah, whenever anyone says "one of the writers was a woman," I have to ask "out of how many?" If it's out of two writers, then well, whatever. Women can make mistakes too. But if it's one woman out of ten writers, then the problem probably could have been caught if there were more women involved.
Let's not forget The Son of Bigfoot from a couple years ago, or it's sequel coming out next year. A veritable golden age of Bigfoot!
