A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

One of only a few women in the Overwatch Contenders League has stepped out after unceasing harassment and doxing.

Just gonna note that this IS Film thread <_< So gaming is bit off topic.
But yeah, that article is really sad. According to it, whole thing was that when she showed up in leaderboards, people started being like "Wait who? Is that puppet account by one of more known male players?" and etc. And then they started demanding proof that she exists and in general treating her either like she is phony or like she is some sort of representation messiah rather than just another player of the game.
We talk about TV, novels and other media on the regular as well.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)I guess thats true yeah, I somehow counted TV as part of film for some reason
(novels I just for some reason forgot. We might have discussed games here too but my brain is currently being stupid so I can't remember if we have had)

I particularly find this comment striking, considering what's going on in the world of comedy now...
Got damn.
Dammit, Ellen, he didn’t even apologize!! Don’t give him a pass!
Honestly, Deep Fakes might be for the better as far as celebrities are concerned. As Johannesson said, people assume that things are fake and they're unaffected for the most part, meaning that if something real was leaked, they actually have plausible deniability. Moreover, they may create less demand for the real thing and thus less incentive for people to try to hack their accounts and violate their privacy.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Interested in Carmen thus far. Now to await what kinds of challenges she's going to be pitted against from VILE.
Allegedly, on the Overwatch Contenders situation, it's being reported that Ellie was indeed actually a persona for a different player. It's getting claimed to have been a "social experiment".
A social experiment that will just harm women contenders even further because now all the suspicion is going to be volleyed at them.
Why do a social experiment on something we know exists?
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.I dont know about Carmen, I liked because she was a awsome over the top thief just bcause she can, see her as good nature protagonist is.....meh.
But them again I will wait to see.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Ugh, why do people keep remaking all of these old cartoons? Can someone please find something original to crea-...*sees Gina Rodriguez's name (from Jane The Virgin)*

Same reason scientists test all sorts of other "obvious" things: To gather data, find out what the truth is instead of what people just assume.
This experiment was still a bad idea, but from an ethical standpoint, not a scientific one.

As I said elsewhere: Don't buy her as hero and she looks too young. The very point of Carmen Sandiego is that she is a lady. Now she looks like another kim Possible.
I’ve never seen anything suggest that’s “the very point” of the character, and her design and voice anyway are clearly that of an adult.

Well, it's what I like about her the most. Never got enough from the movement she made when she turned around in the animated series.
R. Kelly Responds to Surviving R. Kelly
And while the rest of us were glued to our television sets over the course of the six episodes spread out over three separate nights, TMZ reports that Kelly was “disgusted” by the gruesome details unearthed in the docuseries and refused to watch a single minute of it.
Reportedly, he also believes the documentary is merely a “vendetta” against him, as opposed to a call for both accountability for his behavior and justice for those he tormented.
Furthermore, his team reportedly informed him of which individuals appeared in the docuseries and he denies knowing half of them, while dismissing the rest as traitors with self-serving motives.
Good thing R. Kelly’s squirming with fear. He deserves to be locked up for what he’s done and never let out.
On a disappointing note, Bohemian Rhapsody winning Best Picture at the Golden Globes is an uncomfortable situation thanks to Bryan Singer’s involvement and his history of rape and pedophilia. Makes the Time’s Up remarks rather awkward.
Power of Thor!Wasn't he taken off the project?
he did worked on it though
New theme music also a boxHe was fired after completing two-thirds of the principal photography, and is still credited as the main director.
they/them || "Forgive me, regent of queer amphibians" - Lt.BGobI don't know how true the accusations against Singer are, but… even ignoring that, BR was just not that good… Baffling.

Every new revelation about predators in the industry wants me to do a remake of this special, since frighteningly this PSA captures a lot of what high profiled celebrities have been doing and getting away with.
I know those Too Smart for Strangers is now cliche, but in some ways I think we need more awareness towards children about predators who might be in high positions.
Mahershala Ali responds to the Shirley family's claim that Green Book is a "symphony of lies"
On Sunday night, Ali addressed the controversy backstage at the Globes. “I will say this,” he said, “my job is always the same: I have to look at what I am doing and be responsible for it.” After saying that he wouldn’t want to “throw away” everyone’s work on the film, he added that he respects the family and Shirley. “I spoke to the studio and the family and at the end of the day you wish everyone was happy and you don’t want to offend anyone in any capacity.”
Not only did the family dispute the film’s portrayal of Dr. Shirley being estranged from them, but they also criticized the film’s raison d’etre. “It was an employer-employee relationship,” Patricia Shirley, Dr. Shirley’s sister-in-law, said of the pianist and his driver, Tony Lip, whose transformational friendship with Dr. Shirley forms the spine of the film. Never once, she says, did Dr. Shirley ever refer to Tony as a “friend.”
While this is Ali’s first public response to the backlash, the Shadow and Act piece does note that he reached to the family after they made critical statements to NPR in November. “I got a call from Mahershala Ali, a very, very respectful phone call, from him personally,” said Edwin Shirley, Don’s older brother. “He called me and my Uncle Maurice in which he apologized profusely if there had been any offense. What he said was, ‘If I have offended you, I am so, so terribly sorry. I did the best I could with the material I had. I was not aware that there were close relatives with whom I could have consulted to add some nuance to the character.’”
I'm not trying to make light of the fact that image rights are a serious issue, but SJ is literally the poster girl for Hollywood Whitelift casting.
To be fair, most of what she gets called out for isn't necessarily her fault. The adaptation of Ghost In The Shell simply changed the character to be white.
Eddie Redmayne getting cast as a black transwoman was a lot worse, to be honest and if he had made the statement, I would have made the same joke about him.
