A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

I think her parentage is a spoiler (albeit It Was His Sled thanks to the Witcher 3).
What I'm more concerned about is that she's also supposed to have really apparent elf blood, a special kind of elf blood in particular, and that's why she draws the attention of the Wild Hunt. So either the Nilfs are gonna be black, or the Cintrans, but definitely the Wild Hunt. So one of the two major villainous factions are going to be black, possibly both... I doubt this is what was intended.
"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"The non white villain paradox. You have to have a lot of other non villainous and heroic non whites to counter the Unfortunate Implications.
Is a worth task. But I don't think is possible doing it adapting a franchise with mostly white characters.
Watch me destroying my countryI need to find it again, but I recall there was an interview with a Hollywood casting director (I think she worked on Disney remakes and Marvel movies) saying that 90% of the time, if the casting call does not list race, nearly every actor her agents pitch to her is white. This is frequently what comes about of so-called "colorblind" casting.
I mean do it internally, just don't let it get out that you specifically looked for non-whites.
Yeah. That makes sense.
Watch me destroying my countryKinda hard to do that considering casting calls are public and sent out to lots of agents.
It probably doesn't matter in this instance, disregarding the not-small possibility that this is a hoax; as I said previously, Ciri is the worst choice for making any of the canonically white Witcher characters non-white. It creates by far the most complications.
I'd argue Dandelion, of all the major characters, would be the easiest for a race swap since he is already a wanderer and his parentage is of little import IIRC.

"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"I love reading anti SJW guys because how nonsensical they can get.
There's way more handicapped and disabled people in the world. Where are the cries for every piece of media to include someone in a wheelchair or who struggles from a learning disability? Gotta make sure they don't feel left out, right?
You know that the same people that want LGTB rep want representation of disabled people. Right?
Also, wanting LGTB rep in a game that is explicitly about Muh Social Outcast (I like mocking premises of "outcasts" in general, but truth is, LGTB are like a must have if you are gonna do one).
This got downvoted.
Apparently Japanese culture means that they have no duty to represent LGTB people. Which is ironical because the same franchise had characters that were the definition of Ambiguously Gay, in the level of "clearly in love, but never gonna admit it openly".
And my favorite """"argument"""".
How they dare for ask for more rep to popular works.

Watch me destroying my countryWhere are those comments from?
The Persona 5 subreddit. The place where they're self proclaimed rebels that vote for the real Left and vastly prefer (male) teenagers dating adult woman over LGTB teenagers dating each other.
Easy mine for material to mock. Really easy.
Ironically. One of my most upvoted posts is there (a meme based on the political leaning of the game)

Watch me destroying my countrySo, all four fields of art then? (Movies, TV, Music and Theatre) Nice.
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy. Two topics today:
Olivia Munn talks about how her male coworkers on The Predator are seemingly avoiding her after she called out a registered sex offender from being kept in the film.
EDIT: Sterling K. Brown has responded.
An article by Sam Greer on the history of queer representation in video games.
Of those 179 games, only 83 have queer characters who are playable. And of those, only eight feature a main character who is pre-written as queer as opposed to them being queer as an option. Just eight.

Scared or offended?
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy. What does it mean by “queer as an option”? Like a customizable player character?

Wow, John's a Legend.
Report: Jordan Peele May Bring Back Candyman
While Peele is still only in talks and may end up just producing (if at all), this news feels oddly serendipitous. Horror is having a moment right now, in no small part because of the financial and critical success of Get Out. That film made Peele, previously known for his comedy chops, into one of the most in-demand genre creators in Hollywood. His name has been attached to several high profile projects, like the Akira remake and a Twilight Zone reboot. He’s been said to be considering a Get Out sequel, but his next film is called Us, a mysterious, star-studded genre project which Universal will release in March.
For anyone who's never read the Clive Barker short story, called "The Forbidden," I highly recommend it. And as someone who enjoyed the movie, I look forward to seeing what Peele brings forth if he does end up being involved in a new movie.
Yeah, Candyman is an underrated slasher series.
Apologies for a long post.
A random question for the thread: how would you handle Feirfiz in a new adaptation of the King Arthur mythos?
To provide some background, he is the half-brother of Percival; specifically, he is the son of Percival's father Gahmuret, a renowned knight and heir to the throne of Anjou, and Belacane, the Queen of the fictional African or Arabian (it's not exactly clear) kingdom of Zazamanc in marriage. He later meets Percival and accompanies him on his Grail Quest. In other words, he is a more-or-less positive portrayal of biracial-ness, which is not something you would expect of a medieval German poem.
That's not to say he's entirely unproblematic: his primary thematic function is to say "Non-Christians can be good, it is only their lack of knowledge of Jesus that prevents them from attaining salvation." He eventually converts to Christianity to see the Holy Grail, and later marries a Christain and, according to the poem, fathers Prester John.
Just change/downplay the christian elements and be sure that whatever his ethnicity or religion. The real deity of the setting love him. Or just there no deity and thus whatever.
Basically, let him keep his religion.
Watch me destroying my country
I'm not super well-versed on The Witcher, but I believe the most important plot aspect of Ciri's character is that she's the sole heir of Nilfgaard, who are ruthless imperialists and the main antagonists of the work. Unless she's mixed-race on her mother's side, they'd have to Race Lift the other Nilfgaard characters to match as well, or at least her father, who is the Big Bad. In effect it would be the equivalent of what they did with Zuko and the Fire Nation in the live-action Avatar movie. On the extremely off-base chance that the rumor is true, it sounds like a choice in poor taste.
