Diversity and Representation in Media

Go To

A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.

Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.

    Original OP
For discussing any racial, gender, and orientation misdoings happening across various movies and the film industry today.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Man. A Captain Planet reboot would be actually a good idea. Preferably with a Crossover with the original series to see how the world had changed (the Fall of the URSS, for example).

It could avoid a lot of the narm and problematic elements of the series while easily keeping it's soul.

The Facts of Life Reboot would be a good vehicle for diversity.

Unfortunately for Captain Planet, Hollywood is still for the most incapable of handling environmental themes if Avatar is anything to go by.

It's not just Hollywood. Princess Mononoke is about the only film I can recall with a decent environmental aesop.

And that wasn't even Hollywood.

A Captain Planet reboot would probably be a cartoon. Those have a better track record with environmentalism than movies. I remember a handful of Green Aesop Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes that worked well (and the series in general had a theme of living in harmony with nature as much as possible).

I've been pleading for Warner Bros to stop with this DCEU think and do a Hanna-Barbara Action-verse sorta like Future Quest and then add Captain Planet, Swat Kats, Pirates of Dark Water, etc.

There is also Nausica, The Valley of the Winds (Studio Ghibli is kind of obsessed with the theme, so there were bond to do a few good ones).

I would love to see Captain Planet in a more modern light with better writing. The old one has problems you can't overlook once you look deeper. Imo, the best way would be to take the idea but execute it with hindsight on what made the last one problematic under scrutiny.

As I touch in the fiction and ideas thread, green aseop movies have become fewer and fewer in general, is weird how in this times of progresive ideas(diversity, tolerance and other stuff), green aseop have been so underutilized.

It's this whole thing with the White Walkers and the unstoppable, unfightable change they represent. Overall, it reads very much like a climate change story, with factions ignoring the threat because it's politically inconvenient for them, or because fighting it represents an expense they resent fronting. The chief academic institutions all have proof that it's happening, and no one is listening to them because they're not interested in academia.

Huh. Been a while since I've seen a really good allegory like that. Usually it's a bit more... blunt.

But if we're allowed to include tv shows, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has included a few minor green aesops, and Cloak & Dagger (2018) is a Green Aesop combined with Dug Too Deep. It also shows how a corrupt corporation can have employees who mean well and are doing their best and might even be making serious progress, but are still hampered by evil bosses.

There was that one OK KO episode with Captain Planet in it, but the problem is that CP is now snark bait for most people, thanks to stuff like the reviews by Nostalgia Critic and Rebel Taxi, and of course, that Robot Chicken skit. May be better to take the concept and attach it to an original character.

In a really cruel twist in the Me Too movement, Asia Argento has been found to have settled with a sexual assault accuser when he was 17 in 2013. Needless to say, I fear the #Me Too! movement and efforts to stop sexual predation in entertainment are going to face trouble, given well-known alt-right figures who have tried to manipulate it with their love of pedophillia accusations have some ammo now. Especially since An Open Secret was opposed to Argento and their ilk have gone into over drive since James Gunn was fired.

This case seems to have far more proof of sex abuse than Gunn's, though. It would be weaker for the movement than stronger to retain someone who appears to have stronger evidence that they committed a hypocritical crime.

Still, it’s a sad development. But it is noteworthy to mention how the alt-right and related groups obsessed with accusing people of Pedophillia now feel vindicated since a prominent Me Too! spokesperson has skeletons in the closet.

Yes, of the trying to discredit people sort and weaponizing it to level pedophilia accusations. Both Rose Mc Gowan and Asia Argento are favorites on the discredit side and the crowd came out hard in support of Chris Hardwick. Notably, the producers running the Twitter account for An Open Secret run with this crowd, as they frequently retweet and give a show of support to people such as Alex Jones, Mike Cernovich, Milo Yiannopoulos and AJ Benza (who notably served as a guy who dug up dirt to protect Harvey Weinstein). It also doesn’t help they’re fervently pro-Trump and helped Cernovich with the James Gunn firing.

green aseop have been so underutilized.

Mainly because, well, you can see minorities easily, Global Warming is only visible from a big perspective, plus, Green Aesop have a fame of being preachy.
