Diversity and Representation in Media

Go To

A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.

Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.

    Original OP
For discussing any racial, gender, and orientation misdoings happening across various movies and the film industry today.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

[up]Stallone got his start on the production side in the latter Rocky films, so this makes sense.

Now he needs to top Rocky fighting Mr. T and Hulk Hogan in the same movie.

No. Cast Chris Evans as an opponent for Creed so we can see both Human Torches going at it.

If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.

[up][up] I think Evans would be up for that; his more recent roles have been pretty much as far from Captain America as he can manage.

Okey I saw live action of mulan.....and boyWell I finally saw the live action mulan and to see if it was as bad as you guys said.....

and.....damns it is bad, at best the movie is painfully boring, with nobody really taking to anybody in a meanfull way, this movie seriously lack meaningfull human interaction, sure there is some moment here and there(like mulan joking she will save everyone...except yao, which make me crack a smile), is weird how the villians actually feel they have something, at rest the whole thing feel odd how disney did what is a wuxia war film, like in the animated series they have to create a way to get rid of shang yu even when she take his sword but here she just...stright out kill the guy.

And that is at is best, at is worst the movie feel.....nationalistic and paternalistic in really bad ways, aside of the fact that Mulan just strightout beat her problem with chi and determination instead of cleaverness is also how her response to wtich is pretty much "I know my place!" and pretty much shout patrotic slogan not out of place of Xi or mao, Mulan just....reaaaaally try to much and she get acepted as result, while that isnt bad in a power fantasy ways the fact she kind preach that to the witch feel awfull, specially since the witch is the most intersting chararter in the damn movie.

by mixing the too it feel disney somehow create a wolf warrior movie were Mulan beat chinise sexism by being a good patriot, it also feel awfully a this movie was a sort of conservative adaptation of animated film, were there Mulan learn to find herself and grow beyond the expection everyone else was setting her(even a porceline girl as matchmaker wanted or a macho drien guys like army expected) here it feel the inner conflict with Mulan is that she didnt set herself to the standar everyone wanted.

Also maybe is just me but the emperor in this movie sound more....evil that boris khan, as he was VERY eager to face him in battle, I cant stop but seen this as goverment aprove film, I coudnt stuff thinking that Mulan should just stright out team out with the Witch, kill boris khan, kill the emperor and take china by herself, that was never going to happen mind you but it was funny imagine it.

Netflix's new series Bridgerton has ranked #5 for a original series launch on the platform[1]

Unfortunately, speaking of ‘’Bridgerton'', it’s under scrutiny for an extremely questionable scene. (Content warning: discussion of marital rape.)

[up][up] When people mention random series and basically say "hey, this exists/did well/is under scrutiny/etc." would you mind explaining why it's pertinent to the topic of diversity and representation in media?

In this case I have some idea since I've seen an image of it on Netflix's front page, but that's literally it.

Examples in the past have left me even more in the dark requiring me to Google the work just to figure out why it's relevant.

[up] Its relevant because they not only use colorblind casting, the male lead, a Duke, is black in a time period when there was very little chance of ANY Po C reaching the nobility. Also per my roommate who has watched the series, it seems to be a Historical AU where there are in story reasons and motivations on why several members of the Georigian Era Peerage are POC and not just Servants and window dressing

[up][up] The Scene in question was in a way WORSE in the book. IIRC the Duke was DRUNK in the books when that happened

Race in Bridgerton is... a bit weird. It initally seems like it's just colourblind casting, but then at one point there's a line which suggests that having a black queen eliminated racism, which suggets an alterate history instead. Several people have pointed out that doing that doesn't really work, because just having a black queen definitely wouldn't have immediately eliminated racism.

Giving actors 'fancy' rolls in period pieces is nice, but I fell like if you're going to talk about racism at all, you've got to go into it more than that. It's kinda all or nothing.

The fallout from that moment could've definitely been handled better than that. Other than that I enjoyed the series.

I watched the first two episodes of Bridgerton and...I dunno.

I feel like the series missed a huge opportunity to explore blackness and race in British aristocracy. Going the ahistorical route and ignoring it just kind of makes the show seem shallow. I get that it’s supposed to be escapism, but instead it’s just weird to me.

It reminds me a lot of Hollywood, which had the same problem but to the point of being kind of offensive.

I was surprised that it was only brought up during Lady Danbury and Simon's conversation and briefly in a flashback. When Simon mentioned the king's slipping sanity could ruin all that progress I thought it'd be foreshadowing but I guess not. Haven't not read the source material I guess race wasn't something that it got into and that most if not the entire cast was white.

I don't think I plan to watch Bridgerton, but as I understand it, it's like a Regency Romance but with Color Blind Casting, right?

I also found it vaguely amusing to learn that the controversial Questionable Consent / rape scene involved a female character as the perpetrator, given my expectation that a costume drama would have a male perpetrator.

I do like that a work exists where minority actors don't have to play oppressed characters, but I'd also be interested in a period peace which focuses on minority characters as a sort of Perspective Flip.

One suggestion I saw on twitter was a take on Vanity Fair from the perspective of Miss Schwartz, a black Jewish character presented pretty negatively in the text. Thackeray was basically the Lovecraft of Victorian novelists.

Sanditon kind of goes in this direction, as one of the prominent characters is a Creole heiress, Miss Lambe, mentioned briefly in the text of Austen's unfinished novel.

Incidentally, I have a theory that if Austen had lived to complete the novel, her presentation would have been super-racist, because Lambe sounds to me suspiciously like one of Thackeray's racist meaningful names for a black character, Colonel Woolcomb, ironically referencing their dark skin (since lambs are white) and mocking their curly hair.

The Undoing's Noma Dumezweni Will Be Part of the Live-Action World of The Little Mermaid—as Brand New Character

The live-action world of The Little Mermaid just got a little bit bigger. Noma Dumezweni (The Undoing) has been cast in the upcoming Disney flick, per Deadline.

The Little Mermaid will star Halle Bailey as Ariel and yes, we’re anxiously awaiting first-look images of what we expect to be a head filled with luscious red locs. The film appears to be going the colorblind casting route as Javier Bardem has been cast as Ariel’s father, King Triton. Melissa Mc Carthy will be portraying Ariel’s evil aunt Ursula and Jonah Hauer-King will be Prince Eric.

As for Dumezweni, we don’t know who her character will be, but we do know it’ll be a brand new character that did not appear in the 1989 animated version of the film.

[up][up]Before Bridgerton I've never heard the term Regency Romance before but I've seen plenty of tweets and reviews calling it such.

The fact that the series had black characters that aren't strictly slaves/servants in a period piece but hold prominent positions in society with two characters being the most desired in the series is what made me give it a shot.

Omg I have so many thoughts about Bridgerton. On the other hand it *is* nice to have period dramas not full of white people. One the other hand its race relations and the Adaptational Consent scene are wack as hell. And on the other other hand, all the debate about it reminded me of this article — do people hold diverse pieces of media to higher standards, and should they?

Was it like just an accident on the writers part as they made up the name without knowledge it was shared by a dick ?

[up] I think Brian Michael Bendis, the guy who created Miles and thus named Jefferson in the first place, probably didn't really realize what he was doing. I think a potential intent was that you could call Miles "Miles Davis" but that doesn't necessitate the first name.

Hodor2 Since: Jan, 2015
#27074: Jan 6th 2021 at 4:00:29 PM

As far as I know, it was deliberate by the writer (Bendis), as it also sets up a Stealth Pun that Miles should be named Miles Davis.

I'm not sure whether there was ever an in-universe explanation for why an African American person (or anyone who isn't the child of Neo-Confederates) would be named Jefferson Davis.

[nja]

I do remember reading somewhere that the name was chosen because Jefferson was initially presented as a anti-Spider-Man bigot, so it was a Meaningful Name.

Also, since today could use some levity, I'm reminded of discussions of the oddity of Bucky Barnes being named after James Buchanan, who is generally ranked as one of the worst Presidents, and I like the joking explanation (applied to the MCU version) that it's a Meaningful Name since he is Ambiguously Gay and couldn't prevent the Civil War.
