The humans are kind of assholes to Kong in this movie.

Isn't that the story of every King Kong movie? [lol]

It’s a step up from trying to/successfully kill him though.

[up][up][up]It does feel like Kong just walked into a Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla movie by accident. [lol]

"He definitely isn't, I mean even when Godzilla nearly killed him, he's more interested in seeking out his species' homeland to see if he can find more of his kind."

True, although initially it seems that the conflict between the two is that "there cannot be two Alphas", King Kong does not seem to care.

[up] Yep, funny how Godzilla kinda brings the Mechagodzilla beatdown on himself. Because he wasted time antagonizing Kong instead of going straight for Apex and so when Mecha G woke up, neither could overpower the mechanized Titan even together until they go a flask of whisky help

I agree with you that Godzilla is aggressive.

Did anyone else notice this movie has a thing for neon? I don't know why, but it was very noticeable to me.

Also how many years was there supposed between King Of The Monsters and this?

It's something the director is fond of. He uses neon a fair bunch in his films, mostly The Guest and the netflix Death Note film.

The human race in this universe advanced quite a lot in terms of technology, in only four years.

[up] With the Titans renovating the environment and giving new sources of power and materials for humans it was inevitable.

Got to say the neon worked nicely here, especially with Godzilla's glow.

Fun fact: The fat lizard "Doug" and the spider crab thingies are the Monsterverse's incarnation of the Foetodon and Arachno-Claw. They're the first monsters from previous Kong continuities to appear in the Monsterverse (discounting Kong himself) rather than an Expy or Homage.

Funny that Doug’s from Kong’s universe when it looked almost like it could be a cousin species to Godzilla like chimpanzees and humans,

If they make another Monsterverse film focusing on Kong, I'd like to see Gorosaurus or the V.Rex as an antagonist or character alongside other Kong creatures.

She was 12 years old in the previous movie, and 16-17 years old in this one.

The film was shot from the end of 2018 to the beginning of 2019, so the actress was 14 years old when filming began, and 15 years old when it ended.

Saw it last night with my wife and liked it quite a bit, more than KOTM if for no other reason than the human elements in KOTM always left me feeling vaguely annoyed while in GVK this wasn't the case although they were just as silly.

Plus they were tied more closely with the monsters. We didn't have "family drama with monsters as the backdrop."

I think too is that the villains are genuine villains and not misguided parental figures we are supposed to have some sympathy for. We aren't distracted by bad attempts to convey the kind of emotions a husband and child would have in discovering their wife/mother is behind instigating a genocide-by-kaiju with some of the most generic motivations possible (Humans Are the Real Monsters meets Green Aesop). Here the villains are pretty straightforward with selfish but understandable motivations. Hell if Mechagodzilla managed to kill Godzilla that would put humanity back in charge and not rely on Godzilla's, or any other Kaiju's, mercy, which might be a little more appreciated by the rest of humanity who had suffered from Kaiju attacks. This is of course disregarding the fact "Kevin" was actually in control.

While Mechagodzilla seems quite a leap in terms of human tech development for the Monsterverse, I would argue it's not that big of a tech jump from KOTM, considering that movie had several rather massive structures for Kaiju monitoring, including a big ass underwater base with turrets for Godzilla, an enormous lid constructed in the mouth of the volcano where Rodan slumbers, and a giant flying wing that had enough hangar space to deoploy multiple vtols.

Kevin may have been the annoying kid brother in the Ghidorah trio, but he was still a Ghidorah head.

He is the alien space dragon equivalent of Mussolini. A joke compared to the other two but still a monster.

Well, I saw this alleged movie last night at the drive-in, playing second billing to Tom & Jerry. That's a comedy and despite some cringeworthy moments actually functions as a comedy because I laughed at the jokes.

In Godzilla vs. Kong, the movie is a joke. I've seen Kong: Skull Island but not King of the Monsters, so evidently there's some continuity going on with Monarch and this hollow world thing. Maybe I would have connected with the recurring characters more if I'd seen them before, but as lifeless as they are in this movie I can't really see that happening.

The dialog is so epochally bad — so clichéd and full of nonsensical exposition — that I find it hard to believe someone was paid actual money to write it. Maybe they were working undercover for MST3K and deliberately tried to make it as easy to mock as possible. I laughed out loud in almost every scene with human characters and my wife, who was watching with us, kept up a running commentary that was way better than the actual dialog.

I found myself distracted from the giant monster fights — the actual purpose of the movie — because I couldn't get the terrible lines out of my head. It doesn't help that the fight scenes keep cutting to these people, whom we are allegedly supposed to care about but have enough plot armor to survive the Chicxulub meteor impact head-on. Look, movie, you're getting your boring, mentally crippled characters in the way of the monsters, who have way better emotional presence than any of them.

Speaking of monsters, the CG is excellent, but I wish we could have seen more of the fight scenes. Literally. The first time Godzilla fights Kong, it's half in and half out of the water and obscured by "action" camera angles. The second time, in Hong Kong, it's dark and buildings are collapsing like LEGO brand bricks. Is it too much to ask that I can tell what's going on or where the characters are with respect to each other? Is it too much to ask that you stop cutting away from the action so these boring drones can emote at the camera, or are we supposed to be so spellbound when the monke punches the lizard that the ushers have to mop our drool off of the floor?

Also, nice try with the girl. I see what you did there, writers. The little deaf child is the only one who can communicate with the giant ape. There's not enough CG in the world to mask out the puppet strings you're trying to attach to my heart. The only way to make it any more cliché would have been to give her cancer and put her in mortal danger a bunch of times. It worked a bit: she is the only character I gave the slightest crap about besides the monsters. Wait, she somehow knows and taught Kong the sign for "Godzilla"... aaand I'm out again.

In summary, why did they have to put a bunch of unlikable idiots in my giant monster movie when the monsters are the only redeemable part of this confused, boring mess? 1.5 of 5 stars.

Oh, wait, I forgot. It's got a very diverse cast. 5 out of 5.

So provided that the Mosnterverse continues there’s the obvious question of what monsters people want to see back, and there is groundwork for the likes of Destroyah, Kiryu, and Anguirus. Would you guys potentially be fine with another crack at an original monster, or would you prefer that they continue to reimagine the classics?
