I always assumed his grandparents where just caretakers.

Wait does that mean BOTW Link is the only one that's not an orphan?

In addition to the champions, we might also get to see Link's sister die.

Almost want to see them keep weapon durability just to see them break insanely fast in this environment.

That would seem to defeat the purpose of this kind of gameplay, unless they're also giving us a way to increase durability.

Or things get more fragile as time goes on, foreshadowing their doom.

Eh, I'm thinking they might include a "repair cost" system, similar to how Armored Core and similar games have ammo expenses (and occasionally unit repairs) as part of the mission reward summary screen. Better weapons take more rupees at the end of the mission while weaker weapons take less, with the weakest (and some special weapons like the Master Sword) being outright free.

Please don't even hint at the idea of Breakable Weapons or repair costs in a musou game. I will cry.

I guarantee I'll be having more fun with this game than BOTW itself, and I had quite a lot of fun with BOTW.

This is my thought process right now.

I've never played Hyrule Warriors. I've considered getting it, what with all the positive buzz around it, but ultimately I don't even know if I would enjoy the genre, and there was no way to solve that without putting down the money and getting the game to play it myself.

However, this a prequel to one of my favourite games in the world, I can't not get it, and once I've played it I'll finally know whether I want to get the original.

[up] Well if you haven't played a Warriors game before, Hyrule Warriors in general is going to feel hack and slash good fun.

From my experiences with a DW spin off (that being Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2), as well as Hyrule Warriors Legends, I have had a lot of fun with the genre. So I have full confidence in this game. You should try the first one too

Ehhh, the Warriors experience may get more repetitive after a single game.

Fire Emblem Warriors dispensed with weapon durability and repair altogether, so I fully expect Age of Calamity to do the same.

I feel like Musou gameplay is a lot more palatable when it's dressed as something you like. I sunk hundreds of hours into Hyrule Warriors Wii U, but I couldn't get into mainline Dynasty Warriors before, during, or after that experience.

I'd argue Hyrule Warriors has much better gameplay than pretty much any of the mainline DW titles. It's fast, smooth and has some pretty diverse enemy variety. Makes perfect sense to me that someone would enjoy it but not others in the series.

Like, it's the only musou game where I dodge regularly and that alone makes it feel that much more intense and satisfying.

Fire Emblem Warriors has even better gameplay than Hyrule Warriors in just about every aspect; more quality-of-life features, fewer but much more balanced movesets, better combat against enemy commanders (there's more ways to expose their WPG and they tend to not be as absurdly damage-spongey), a smoother engine less prone to glitches/memory leakage, and less RNG-dependant weapon customization.

But if you don't enjoy Fire Emblem— or don't enjoy its controversial roster choices —you're simply not going to enjoy the game as much as you would Hyrule Warriors or any other Warriors game built around a franchise you like. Like half of the appeal of a Warriors game isn't the gameplay, but who you get to run around slicing mooks up as.

I dunno, having FE Warriors launch with a mechanic based on the weapon triangle with one lance moveset shared by three characters was not great. [lol]

Three characters who also share a crippling weapon weakness, at that.

Must. Resist. Urge. To go. On multi-paragraph rant. About. How. Hyrule Warriors. Is way better. Than Fire Emblem warriors. Must. Show. Restraint. I'm. A fan. Of both games. And franchises.

But yeah there's a reason there are four One Piece warriors games plus ones for Berserk and The Heroic Legend of Arslan and I've lost track how many Mobile Suit Gundam there are.

"How would X work in a musou game" is a fun question to answer.

[up][up][up],[up][up]Yeah, that was not good. It's not a problem once you add the Fates DLC, but, y'know, it shouldn't take paid DLC to fix a balance issue with the base game. On the other hand, Hyrule Warriors didn't have any good Water weapons until arguably King Daphnes in the Legends re-release. The Great Fairy and Ruto both suck ass, Impa's sword is really clunky, and everybody but me seems to hate Lana's spear.

[up]I'm genuinely curious what gameplay elements you feel Hyrule Warriors does better, if you can condense it down.

Note that when I say gameplay, I mean the actual mechanics of gameplay, not stuff like the character choices or larger quantity of unique movesets.

Personally I found it somewhat difficult to go back to Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition without at least the quality-of-life improvements FE Warriors made to the engine, to say nothing of stuff like how awkward it is to issue commands to your non-controlled characters or how bad and RNG-dependant the giant bosses are.

Actually, I thought that Hyrule Warriors' story was more-or-less absolute garbage. I really hope that Age of Calamity's story team will do a much better job than the last one because hoooo boy did I think Hyrule Warriors' main story was dumb.

What I enjoyed about Hyrule Warriors was the Zelda series references that were injected into the character movesets, maps, enemy designs, and other active gameplay elements. The OCs ended up fitting into the world well enough that they didn't distract from that.

Dunno why people think the playable characters "would be strict" when musou games always have what is essentially a "non-canon mode".
