Sonic looks to be speeding to VOD as well over COVID-19 come March 31st.

Edit: Wow, what a pagetopper.

Yeah, it's surprising how many movies that are in theaters are now being put through streaming services and digital early due to the virus. I even heard that Warner Bros might put the new Wonder Woman movie through streaming services instead due to the virus.

[up]Actually they recently stated they are planning to not put it to VOD.

But yeah at least this could keep up the Sonic hype.

It's gonna have bonus features like audio commentary, featurettes, and deleted scenes!

I know I've asked this before, but is this movie actually good?

It's way better than something like it has any right to be, especially in regards to how video game movies normally are.

It has a lot of the hallmarks of a cheap cash-in, but the movie loves Sonic as a character, Carrey is having a blast and the final fight against Robotnik feels like it was taken straight from the games.

Plus Tom is actually a good character, a departure from the kind of person these films normally have as the human stand-in where they're some washed-up and jaded loser who needs to learn how to love life. Tom is a successful guy with a great wife and a nice house who's sheriff of a whole town. His only flaw, if you could even really call it that, is feeling trapped and wanting to be somewhere that he can actually make a difference as a cop.

At least he isn't a Romantic False Lead unlike every other character played by James Marsden.

Sonic appeals to his good nature and they become genuine friends, there isn't a Third-Act Misunderstanding getting in the way that looks poorly on both of them.

Oh, and on top of that:

Very little use of the normal Cringe Comedy moments that come with a thing like this. The bar scene was the only one and that wasn't nearly as cringey as most of those kinds of moments are.

So...it looks like there won't be a Chinese or Japanese release will there?

eaving the angry furry with no artistic talent aside, if they start making more of a series of this, who do you want to see in some capacity?

I'm optimistic but keeping the cast small with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles is good enough for me. The Sonic OVA rocked it with those 3, Robotnik, and Metal.

Maybe add Maria, Shadow, and Gerald. Everybody else is kind of superfluous when Sonic lives in the human world. We already have a cute kid character, law enforcement comic relief, etc.

You start bringing in Cream and the Chaotix and this just turns into a slightly better, live-action version of Sonic X. Unfortunately, the film made its bed with Sonic in the human world, and while seeing Tails at the end was promising I don't really care to see the majority of Sonic's cast in future installments.

I'm also okay with the movies having a smaller cast (preferably Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose) since they need to spend time on developing the characters and having a large cast can make that complicated. However, I wouldn't mind if they made spin off movies of some of the other characters like Shadow, Rogue the Bat and the Chaotix to name a few.

So, after some encouragement from you folks here on this thread, I decided to watch the movie.

It was actually pretty good. Jim Carrey's performance was great; he's clearly having fun with this. Sonic was a good character, and his dynamic with James Marsden was really fun and sweet.
