Okay wow this thread has been VERY inactice without my input. XD

So the new chapter of The Beast of Beacon is out.

Goddamn. This fic has one of the most detailed and (in my experience) realistic portrayal of Faunus racism in any of the RWBY fanfics I've read.

Also, this fic's Adam is the best portrayal of him I've seen in fanfics. In some way, he's the close to the Adam that I wish he turned out in the canon.

Well, there isn't that much for me to talk about. I can give you loads of Arcanum updates if you want, or I can try to advertise my own fics.

Speaking of which, I actually had someone translate some of my writing into Russian. It's weird cause I never considered my stuff to be worth reading in any language, but it does feel sort of cool.

I actually haven't checked out neither Null nor Arcanum.

Considering that I havent checked Vale's Secret Service or whathaveyous, I guess I'm just not drawn into alternate universe CAA stories that aren't primarily comedic.

Oh, and the new chapter of The Beast of Beacon is out.

...Man, if Adam in canon was half as cunning and restrained as in this fic, he'd been a much bigger threat to Team RWBY.

[up] I'll give you a summary of the latest chapter then.

Adam massacres a bunch of Grimm by throwing a library at them. It's really awesome, but then Glynda arrives to casually commit a war crime, praises Corsac Albain for an act of mass murder, and generally proves to be a valid candidate for Complete Monster title. This makes Ruby even more resolved to help Cinder and Adam start a war against Vale and makes Weiss question if joining a cult was a good idea. And yes, I enjoy making it sound as weird as possible.

In unrelated news, I found a cool discord server for RWBY Fanfiction writers. I did some beta reading there and just had to correct a text with four errors per line on average. Fun stuff.

I'm writing a Fix Fic for RWBY here. I call it DNMC (say, "dynamic", as in energetic, so red?). I'll admit, there's a lot left to the imagination right now, but I'm planning on it being what I felt the original show had the potential to become if the showrunners didn't make things up as they went along. I'll also admit that I'm not too proud of centering it around some OC's of mine. I guess I wanted to get in on the OC game and wanted to see what kind of stories they could tell. Anyway, hope you enjoy! :D (And don't be afraid to check out my other stuff there, too.)

The new chapter of The Beast of Beacon is out.

This whole chapter, at least in my opinion, is filled with so many cute and awesome moments that I was smiling the whole time.

Highlights include:

  • Yang and Adam having very personal heart to heart talk. And yes, Adam actually heard Yang calling him Mr.Mcbroodypants on their first meeting. [lol]
  • During the breakfast next morning, Adam actually apologizes to Weiss about a manner that involves SDC. Like, damn.
  • And apparently Adam and Yang's fistfight sparring session got recorded and leaked, causing controversy due to how "brutal" it is, not helped by the uploader's Manipulative Editing.
  • Then at the mess at the end of the chapter:
    • Adam gets beaten up by other students over the video and he takes the beating until someone tries to open his eyepatch, which causes him to stab the person's hand with his horn.
    • Weiss actually screams at the other students to stop, kicking and scratching at the students holding her back.
    • And Ozpin walks in stops the whole thing and my God, I've never seen Ozpin acting so commanding and full of authority, neither in the canon and fanworks.
    • Finally, Adam finally gets his first talk with Blake and he expresses his anger without a single act or threat of violence.

God, I love this fic.

...It DOES contain heavy elements of Blake-bashing, according to detractors and frankly, I can't really blame them. Hell, even the author admitted that. [lol]

[up][up] Well Jaune does get a cool moment in this chapter by having ten times more guts than Blake during a fight... not that it's much of an achievement with how Blake is portrayed in this story.

Not that I oppose it. All aboard the shitty kitty train.

I haven’t followed RWBY in a while and I absolutely despise character bashing. It sounds like a heaping helping of leather pantsing and death eatering is going on here.

[up] Well, I'm not sure. CAA has definitely written fics where Blake is a perfectly fine character. His first couple even had her as the main love interest and one of the primary POV characters. This seems less like bashing and more "let's try a fic where she's not a very good person." Basic Adaptational Jerkass rather than Ron the Death Eater.

Though I can still certainly see avoiding it on those grounds anyway. I'm not super fond of Adam as a character so I haven't read this yet, and hearing that Blake isn't great in it just makes me shy away from it anyway. I'm not a fan of Adaptational Jerkass, because it feels like bashing even if I know it's not.

As much as I absolutely adore this fic, I have to agree on those points. Much of my enjoyment of this fic does derive from me and CAA's shared sentiments of Adam as a character being totally underused. As such, even though this is now one of my favorite CAA fic, I don't really recommend this to anyone. Then again, I usually don't recommend any CAA fic to someone who isn't a big Jaune fan anyway. XP

If it helps anyone, there are also several CAA fics where Adam is more or less a flat, Complete Monster-ish villains, like Captain Dragon and White Sheep. [lol]

I liked Adam in White Sheep (haven't read the other one yet). He's intelligent and competent, but not quite as much as he thinks, and still an asshole. Just not so blatantly self-destructive like he ended up in canon.

Service with a Smile made him a bit nicer, and it also made Blake a bit worse to compensate. Not much, but still noticeable. So maybe CAA just doesn't think Adam can be made sympathetic without making Blake unsympathetic.

An interesting trivia.

Relic Of The Future now has nearly 20K reviews, making it not only the most reviewed fanfic in RWBY category, but also one of the most reviewed fanfics in the entire Fanfiction.net.

So I looked up 10 categories in Fanfiction.net that have the most fanfics, according to Wikipedia. Obviously, I sorted by Reviews and all age rating. I found that there are 4 fanfics in the Harry Potter category with more reviews than ROTF, 2 in Naruto, 7 in Twilight, 1 in Inuyasha. The other category within Top 10 fandoms didn't have a fanfic with over 19K reviews.

Basically, ROTF should be at least within the Top 20 most reviewed fanfics in the site.

Found a new fic, Children of Remnant, which is at its most basic the same as White Sheep (RWBY) (Jaune is the Prince of the Grimm who wants world peace), but NOT Played for Laughs in the slightest.

Fifteen years ago, Queen Salem revealed herself to the people of Remnant with an offer: a reduction in Grimm across the globe, but in exchange, five children, one from each nation, were to be delivered to her as a hostage. Now, those children are returning to civilization for the first time, and no one knows what to expect or how they were changed by the experience.

Jaune is the leader of the five, Salem's heir (no, he doesn't know why she needs an heir either), The Wise Prince but with minimal Grimm abilities. Pyrrha is his general, One-Woman Army, and completely obsessed with Jaune. Blake is his spymaster who never stops lying to everyone, and a bit less obsessed with Jaune. Weiss is his sorceress, a Womanchild who was broken by her experiences and regressed to a childlike state but still extremely dangerous. Emerald is his assassin, the lost princess of Vacuo who is definitely not some random orphan the king and queen passed off as their own when Salem came calling.

The story starts with them beginning their time at Beacon. Except they're not in disguise, everyone knows exactly who they are, and multiple people are hospitalized before they start their first class.

I haven't finished it yet, but it's pretty dark and getting darker. I'm not big into dark stuff, so I might give up eventually. It's very well-written, though. One of the things I like is that although Salem is a very strong presence in the story, she never actually shows up. It lends her a powerful air of mystery, since absolutely no one, including her children, know what her goals are.

It's a political fic, meaning it goes with the old standby of "here are all these incredible powers you can't use." Pyrrha's primary arc so far is that she is completely useless outside of killing, and she's not allowed to kill people (or fight at all, because she's not that great at holding back). Same with Emerald, though she also has to deal with her severe abandonment issues and being so deep in the closet that she doesn't even know same-sex relationships are a thing. Blake is mostly a skilled manipulator, but runs into huge problems because Kali sees right through her and she doesn't realize it. And Weiss is just insane.

Not to mention all the trauma. Aaaaaall the trauma. This is aggressively not a wish-fulfillment fic.

Does anyone know some good RWBY fanfic authors other than Coeur Al Aran?

Because I read so many of his fics and those alone, my perception of canon is getting really distorted, to the point of preferring his interpretation of certain characters than the actual writers of the show (see, I don't even remember their names). So I feel that I need to read more non-CAA RWBY fics. [lol]

[up] Believe it or not, multiple people have reported this problem. Can't really recommend much, since I happen to suffer from that problem myself - if you discount the guilty pleasure stuff - and I'm not quite shameless enough to promote my own stuff. If you want though, here's a discord server for RWBY fanfic writers who might have fewer scruples and/or read more fics than me. And by might I mean they will because holy hell are these guys productive.

Edit: Unless by some chance you haven't read Red Sun Over Beacon yet? One of my favorite fics, though outdated by quite a while.

There are plenty of great RWBY fics besides CAA's, but good and reasonably prolific writers are a bit more rare.

Selene Sokal is writing that Children of Remnant fic I mentioned earlier, but they've got a very wide genre list. There's political drama, comedy, and apparently some smut over on their A03 account if that's your thing. I've only read CoR so far, but they're an excellent writer.

Mallobaude does comedy fics, especially random crack fics that look vaguely plausible. Mostly one-shots, though.

If you really like Blake/Yang, explosivesky almost exclusively writes Bumblebee AUs, such as modern settings or newspaper settings, so on and so forth. Again, a good writer, but it's pretty much always Blake/Yang with passing references to other stuff in the background.

sentinel28II has a flagship fic that's a big AU, but they've also got some smaller side fics that are interesting. Including a Sex Comedy collection that varies from cute to hilarious to actually genuinely touching.

Those are the only authors that I keep an eye on that I think are actually still active. Most of the really popular fics are not written by prolific authors, for whatever reason.

Goddamn it.

I've been trying to avoid CAA fics, but then he started a new RWBY fic (no points for guessing who's the main character).

"Knight Of Salem"

Genre: Humor/Romance

Of all the consequences of forging his transcripts, being kidnapped by Salem, Queen of the Grimm was not one Jaune Arc expected. Then again, she probably hadn't expected that the act might lead to her being "cured" of her Grimm affliction, either. Suddenly human and no longer in charge of her own Grimm, Salem will be damned if this idiot doesn't take responsibility.

...I'm honestly quite impressed by this point with just how many stories he could put Jaune in. [lol]
