Welcome to the Character Development Threads! These shared story exercises allow you to develop your characters in a setting shared by other authors and their characters. No sign-up is necessary; simply look over the last few pages and hop on in. If you need questions answered or a recap, head over to our discussion thread and ask; we’re happy to help. There's also a trope page (with location descriptions and other info).

Archipelago is semi-casual — no violence on the central island, but the rest are fair game. Other islands are built on-the-fly by the tropers whose visiting them, but you should probably grab a few others before having your characters head off — there's not much point wandering an island alone, since this is supposed to develop characters by bouncing them off one another and putting them in unusual situations. Be sure to communicate with the tropers you go with so you're on the same general page.

With thanks to, among many others, Gault, who came up with the initial idea, Nrjxll, who wrote the first draft I shameless ripped off, and the various people who contributed to the trope page location descriptions.

This has made the hub island something of a designated neutral ground for various strange characters and dimensional travelers. A small cluster of buildings has sprung up near the one natural harbor and its dock: a couple of bars, a couple of casinos, several shops, and even the cheap but comfortable Pax Island Hotel. This is not a tourist trap, though, as much as amenities for the visitors that come here for various reasons. The Hotel's entrance leads out to a central square, with a shamelessly cheesy tiki bar calling itself the Big Kahuna and the Pax Island General Store being the most obvious, though not the only, services.

Inland, the island is covered in jungles that rise steeply into a central mountain, covered in ruins that don't seem to exactly match any of the local cultures. Apart from that, though, they're harmless and unrelated to the area's strangeness. The population on the island, humans of mixed origins, are quite used to the strangeness of their island, staffing the amenities and filling newcomers in but otherwise keeping to themselves.

Beyond this hub island, the archipelago grows more mysterious and dangerous. Fogs often cover the ocean, and compasses and other forms of navigation don't always work right. There are at least a half-dozen other islands at any one time, but that's all anyone can say for certain. The docks on the hub island offer numerous boats for visitors to travel to these islands, either under their own control or with the aid of a local sailor. Of course, there's always an element of risk involved with visiting these islands, because you never know quite what you'll find. One rule has proven consistent, though: any truly catastrophic event on an island tends to result in it vanishing into the fog, never to be seen again.

[Pax Island ~ Outside Big Kahuna]

Howell turned around to face the Big Kahuna bar and grill. "And you don't want to go back in there." he said, shaking his head. "Or do you?" He continued to watch the entrance to the Big Kahuna, and those gathered near it, blinking very occasionally and doing little else.

"I don't know how every person would respond to your returned presence, but I don't think Iris would try anything again. She'll probably just avoid talking to you. Or maybe attempt to apologize, if you're unlucky." There was a small smile forming at the corners of his mouth. "If nothing else seems like a good idea," he said, turning his snakeish head to look at Regina directly, "you've still got an order coming. I could ferry it out to you once it arrives, if you feel like loitering for a bit."

[Pax Island ~ Big Kahuna]

"Thanks Hayate." Iris said, sighing and leaning back in her chair, "thanks bunches. But just so we're clear: I get TV privileges back by the end of the week, right?"

She caught a half a laugh in her throat and let the other half loose, then closed her eyes for a moment and nodded, "Yeah, I hear you. Like I said earlier, that was my first Gore Demon. Maybe the name was a big enough giveaway, but... well, now I know what to expect. At least a bit more. I guess you just assume— or I just assumed—that if something calling itself a demon is friendly enough to come to a common and—in my experience—human establishment and sit down with a group of strangers just like that..." she sighed, letting her gaze trail off a bit, "...then they wouldn't blow up at a bit of... provocation."

Iris frowned and muttered aloud, "Jesus, it just sounds stupider the more I talk about it." she exhaled her dismay, then continued in a bit of a brighter form, "But you're right, and it's done, and," she paused, "it's probably best that me and her just... don't see each other again."

After a few moments of silence she glanced at Hayate again and remarked, "Oh, nice display there by the way." she smiled a brightening smile, "You know, you could be a real dazzler up on stage."

"Oookay." Violet furrowed her brow. So she could take the black one out there, and the red one over there—

"I got it!"

"I dunno, Esa. Anger, sadness, and pride haven't done me much good before in any amount. Maybe I'm not doing it right. They done anything for you?"

Books. Fuck yes. They were his only friends in childhood, and even now when he—yeah, still his only friends. And, uh, the building was pretty nice too.

"This place looks like it's kept up by someone. Hope we're not unwelcome here."

He quickly noticed the gap between the fifth and sixth rings, mostly because there was no obvious reason for it and it really bothered him. With a heavy sigh, he stood there and stared at it. Why. Why was that there.

Rikael blinked. “Oh. Well. Good.” She began to fidget in her chair. “I really didn’t expect there to be so much violence here. I’m- I’m really more a lover than a fighter.” Rikael attempted a smile, but it served only to highlight the fact that she was still visibly shaken. “Well, uh- it- it was good talking to you? I guess?”

"I suppose. You need a drink or something?" Samuel asked. He couldn't get drunk any more; alcohol had basically no effect on him at all, which he supposed was probably a net loss even if he'd never indulged it much before. Still, it might calm her down. "If not, I'll just move along-wait, you can cover your bill, right? Everyone else walked out on you."

[Quantum Princess, D3 Hallway]

The stranger saw no reason to reveal too much too quickly, and so took the hit. The mass tore through the stranger like a bullet, but the stranger, if its body language could be used as a measure, seemed pleased with this turn of events. After all, the situation had changed to one it preferred.

"∀ { 1 < x < 10; -0.5 < y < 0.5; 0 < z < 1 } : g = 1/0"

[Nulbarak Island, Forest]

Layi quickly looked at the box and said, "I think I've done all I can for first aid. But you tell me." Then she paused. "By the spirits, did you leave Askeda to fight that thing on her own?" Then, calming slightly, "or did you finally manage to kill it?"

[Quantum Princess, C3 Hallway]

Irilemi grimaced. Ah. That voice. Irilemi knew she wasn't the First Paragon, so bit back the tempting insults. Instead, remaining civil, she said, "you must understand... just leaving may be a bit more complicated than that. Without that delightful Captain Cogbeard, we can't go anywhere. And since I'm quite sure he'll not be leaving without plentiful loot, we're out of luck." She shrugged. "Unless you can spare us a few trinkets, of course. I'm sure an entity of your stature has no need for gold, silver, and the other shiny metals mortals are so enamored with."

[Ruins Library]

Esa shook her head and said, "me personally? Yes. Without pride, I would have been content to be just another cook — now, my little is known throughout province as host to some of the finest barbecued ribs known to mankind." She pointed at Friedrich's box. "Those are just an imitation... a fair one, but nothing compared to what I can do." She glanced between the painting and the floor. "And of course, the story of my people? We would have never broken free of slavery if we did not make ourselves into weapons against it. Weapons forged on the fires of righteous rage, and quenched in the tears shed for those lost."

She then took a seat in the middle of the library, sitting cross-legged, hands on her knees. She focused her mind outward, emptying her mind of everything but the sensations of consciousness and sense. The intent was merely a form of outward-focused spiritual meditation, but if there was anything arcane of particular note, she'd be able to sense it, albeit only in a vague and unfocused way.

Friedrich was going to give Esa a reply, but he reckoned he shouldn't interrupt her meditation. He let out a heavy sigh and leaned on the wall next to the painting so he could enjoy his lunch. What was Violet getting up to now? Still trying to get Marla out of the box? He kind of wanted to check on her, but—nah, he could trust her for another ten minutes, probably. She talked about the damn baby all the time, so she knew she should be careful.

"Well, I guess I'm just not doing it right," he said, half to himself.

Aw, shit, he knew he was forgetting something.

He moved somewhere out of her line of vision. The coins that Esa put on the table at the restaurant and Friedrich had replaced with his own money floated out of his pocket and back to her, looking for a pocket or purse to slip inside. When Friedrich thought he found the right place, he simply dropped them inside.

Esa sensed energy and turned to look at the source. She seemed relieved to find they were just coins, which she snatched out of midair and pocketed. Then she turned to Friedrich, and raised an eyebrow. "Usually," she said, "people are trying to remove coins from my pockets. Not put them in. Care to explain?"

Esa let out a light laugh. "So you were paying attention?" She waved a finger. "Just so. A little pride goes a long way. You may think to yourself it has cost you a few coins, but feh. Keep that pride and you shall never truly be slave to anyone." She was about to return to her meditation, but then she turned back. "Killed, maybe. But better to die free then live a slave — in the end, after all, it is not if you die, but how." A devilish smile came to her lips. "My people used to like dying covered in the blood of our enemies. Until we ran out of enemies." Sheer braggadocio, and not technically accurate, but Esa couldn't resist. "Yourself?"

Rikael’s eyes went wide. “Oh! Oh shit. No, I completely-” She buried her head in her hands. “Fuck’s sake, I’m supposed to be an economist and I missed- you know-” She shook her head from side to side vigorously, then reached into a pocket of her traveling clothes and withdraw a handful of small bills. They were not familiar to Samuel.

“Look- here, just… This should be enough to cover my share, if- aw shit!” Rikael rocked back in her seat. The money she had held in her clawed hand fluttered about to land in various places around the table. “They probably don’t even recognize Commonwealth money here! This would be useless to them!”

[Quantum Princess, D3 Hallway - Bernhard Beta and The Stranger]

The stranger may have heard the dreaded 'dunk' sound, all-too-familiar to new students of mathemagic, indicating they had tried to cast an invalid spell, which would do nothing. This is, of course, assuming that the stranger is copying the same mechanics from Bernhard.

"Hah! Amateur!" Bernhard said, now approaching the end of the hallway. "E ⋈ m [1] : T = 1000" he said, as a bolt of temperature was released from his staff, aimed directly at the stranger, attempting to heat them up to over 700C / 1300F.

[Quantum Princess, Security Office / Armory >> Engine Core - Cogbeard, Adrian, Virgil, Jarla, and Azatha]

"Alright, let's go!" Jarla said, powering up her railgun, "the engine core is just through here." She walked over to a back door, and after typing in a code, it opened, revealing a shimmering field of energy in the middle of a short walkway, with the door at the end marked 'Engineering'. She then placed an EMP grenade next to the field, and armed it, as she said, "I hope this works."

After running back and closing the door again, a loud electric bang was heard from the hallway, and upon checking, the energy field was gone. "Hurry!" Jarla said, as she ran down the hallway, and punched in a code to the Engineering door, opening it as well.

Once inside, they would find a most impressive sight. A massive room, easily fitting a 747 with room to spare, a cylinder the size of a double-decker bus sitting horizontally in the center, supported by thick pylons on all sides. It glowed with immense energy, as the numerous conduits and wires connected to it transmitted power across the ship, the intake and exhaust fuel lines piped into its front and rear. Numerous control panels and energy readouts covered the walls and stations in the floor, with many discarded or abandoned crates and supply containers lying around, likely containing all varieties of repair and analysis equipment.

However, not all was as it should have been, as glowing black and gray tendrils snaked their way out of broken panels in the walls, ceiling, and floor, and wrapped themselves around the conduits and central core. They radiated eldritch energy, clearly not of this plane, defying logic or comprehension.

"Hey! How dare you enter here?" the girl's voice (Azatha) said, echoing through the chamber. "I never should have let you get away earlier," she said, as the voice coalesced to a point on the ceiling, where a semi-translucent black-and-grey glowing girl could be seen Levitating down into the chamber. She looked no more than 10 years old, with bright red eyes, and black tendrils for hair, wearing what almost resembled a Victorian dress, but her black aura obscured all but the largest details. One might be able to sense an eldritch power emanating from her, one that defied all logic and comprehension, but was nonetheless (currently) free of (immediate) sanity-reducing effects.

"Prepare to die," she said, as her hair formed into an attack position.

Boss battle: fight! :)

[Quantum Princess, C3 Hallway - Raphael, Irilemi, and Kina]

"I'm sorry, but I have a much more important call coming in," said the girl's voice, "I'll put you on hold - just... don't go anywhere."

Once her voice finished, light jazz muzak began playing over the announcement speakers.

"I-I've heard that voice before..." Kina said uncertainly, "when the ship crashed."

[Quantum Princess, C1 Treasure Room - Adrian Kunstler and Azatha]

"Whoops, gotta go," Azatha said, disappearing into thin air.

Adrian can now basically do whatever he wants while Azatha is busy. Including trying to make off with as much treasure as he can carry.

Big Kahuna

"Regina was the first of her kind I've met as well, but such implicit language is universal," Hayate said, "I guessed what was going to happen from similar experiences with oni. Granted, oni are generally much less patient than Regina apparently was." He glanced towards the door. "But that's just unnecessarily hammering it in further, and I believe we're done here. Unless you really wish to know more?"

At Iris's comment about his transformation, he let out a bark of laughter. "Me? A performer? That's incredibly unlikely. I am first and foremost a royal advisor, I worked hard to obtain that position, and it's a position I'm honored to hold. Acting is not my strong suit, and that sort of thing is usually left to the tsukumogami, and even some of the friendlier nue."

Outside Big Kahuna

"I hadn't thought about that," Kaguya replied, "And I doubt Hayate-sama has either. We're not unused to sleeping out in the open, but sleeping indoors would be nice for once. If we decide to stay overnight, anyway. For all I know, we might wind up leaving before nightfall." She glanced at the rather fancy building some distance away from the restaurant, and frowned. "Unfortunately, we don't have any money. I would have brought at least some yen, but Hayate-sama told me I wouldn't need it where we were going. Guess he didn't see us winding up here."

Thomas blinked.

"Oh, so you're also low on cash?" he asked, smiling "Well, that's not a big deal. We can offer you some money. Or, you can stay with us for the time being. Either way, we can help you out."

George looked wearily at her. He had nothing against Hayate or Kaguya, but he already had to help out Iris and her brother. Plus, he was worried that another incident like the one that happened in Big Kahuna would rise again. And there was the fact that Thomas was being way too nice and if they meet the wrong person it could end up getting them in trouble.

He took a step forward and raised a hand.

"Just..." he said, "If you do want to join us, please be careful with that mind reading power of yours. I do not want to start anymore fights while we're here."

Nathan nodded in agreement. "Please."

Down payments are good. Adrian used a goblet to measure out some silver coins and tossed them in his bag. Suddenly, his employer vanished, before he could even set the goblet down. He lifted his bag- it weighed barely anything.

Eh, why not. He started to look around...

Just don't take too much now; can't have the weight getting in the way. He cleared some coins off a treasure chest and wedged it open, finding a greenish pendant of some sort. What did they call this again? Mythril? Eh, it felt valuable. He tossed it in. And a cup of cold coins for good measure. The goblet went in as well, he closed the chest, scooped up his bag and headed out into the D3 hall, making sure to keep quiet as he did so.

Seriously, what the hell does the Stranger even look like?

[Pax Island ~ Outside Big Kahuna]

Howel blinked a few times. His rather rigid brow seemed to lower even further, though it seemed an unaccomplishable feat. Finally, he asked, "So... do you want to go back inside, or stay out here? Whatever you choose, I'm heading back inside in just a minute. If you want my help, speak now."

[Pax Island ~ Big Kahuna]

"No thanks, lesson learned." Iris said, putting up a hand. "Though I've got to say, should I, by some miraculous occurrence of events develop magical or otherwise superhuman abilities, I think I'd be just a touch more careful about using them. There's hurt and there's harm, and a large gap between them. Hell, at least with words just about everyone stands an equal chance."

Her voice had started to develop a grumble, and she seemed to notice too. "I should just let it go. She's not here anymore, I am, and I'm still alive. This is easy." She closed her eyes for a second, then opened them and smiled. "There, I've let go. It's all floating away now, like a big red balloon, off to the better parts of space. I could really use that food now."

She propped her head up with her hand and one elbow on the table, and smiled at Hayate. "Well in your case, you probably wouldn't even have to do much. Just get some crew to set you up a nice show and work your magic, and you'd stun the crowds. At least, I think so." She shrugged, saying, "Actually, I'd be surprised if I knew anything about what would stun people these days. I feel like a recluse, how little I know. Take Japan for instance; I've heard that living in an unfamiliar culture can almost feel like living in another world entirely, but what you describe sounds like a bit of a bigger jump than I expected. I don't even know what a 'tsukumogami' is. And—I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but—I've never heard of a fox, mystical or not, being a royal advisor ever."

Iris paused, seeming to ponder the thought for a while, then took a big breath and asked, "How long has Japan been like that anyway?"

Regina shook back into focus, "Yeah, let's go inside, I was just lost in thought for a minute there," she made a small laugh while she rubbed the back of her head.

She headed back into the restaurant, trying to avoid paying attention to any stares she would receive. She picked a table in an opposite direction from the one Iris was stationed at and breathed a heavy sigh. She wasn't expecting anyone to join her, but at least she would get some food in her stomach.

[Quantum Princess Engine Core]

Adrian and Virgil went into full attack mode.

Adrian's formed was noticeably different. His skin had become red and black, with a rope like texture. His mouth has become a large maw, lined with teeth. His eyes has become pure yellow with menacing cross shaped pupils, while a tired eye opened up on his forehead. He had grown bat like wings, while his coat and his hair had become red and black tentacles. The katanas also changed, becoming surrounded with red energy, a black tentacle wrapped around the blade itself. He stood in attack ready position, wielding both swords in hand.

"Think that you're strong?" Adrian asked, his voice shifted by his eldritch form, "Let's see get on my level little girl!"

The only difference on Virgil was his arm, the red mass having surrounded it, turning his fingers into blades. His katana was also at the ready.

"On your word captain." Virgil said to Cogbeard, determination to win in his voice.

Tamara was very glad to have her sword in-hand once more. Largely for practical, magic-related reasons, but also for psychological ones as well. Being able to grasp the hilt firmly in her right hand was more of a comfort than she'd thought it would be. She wanted to explain her plan to Layi and Kevin, but just breathing was hard enough, and the dizziness wasn't helping either. She hoped they would just go along with her.

With her left hand she grabbed the end of the sheath, wincing a bit as a dull pain in her shoulder protested her movement. With both hands on either end of the sword, she pulled, and although she didn't bring much strength at the moment, succeeded in her plan. Just a few inches of the blade were revealed, but that was enough. Strange, dark energies emanated from the black metal of the sword, absorbing a small amount of light from the weapon's immediate vicinity.

Mere moments had passed, and already Tamara felt her weakness subsiding as the sword gave her some of its energy. The pain in her ribs remained, however, and still prevented her from doing much explaining. She figured she would only need a few moments before she had enough energy to heal herself, but until then... She hoped the others wouldn't jump to conclusions.

With a loud crunch, Askeda's sword broke through the tough armour of one of the crab's upper-legs, searing the soft flesh beneath. The creature reeled in surprise and pain, furiously clawing and snapping at Askeda as it hastily retreated towards the open water...

"Oh, no you don't," snapped Askeda. She drew up her hand and bellowed, "Hra venkoda tyank'on!" The ground began rumbling, and a solid rock wall shot up from the earth between the crab and the sea. It was a good twenty feet tall and very smooth; not utterly unclimbable for the crab, but it'd have to be careful if it did. At five feet thick, the crab could break through it with some good hits, but it'd be a sitting duck while it did. And, of course, the crab could go around, but with a length of twenty feet of wall in either direction, it'd take a while.

However, Askeda immediately knew she was pushing it. Her balance tilted a bit to one side and blue began bleeding into the edges of her vision. It wasn't that bad yet, but it'd get a lot worse if she tried something similar in scope. Technically, she could just let it escape, but she was stubborn. She didn't want to simply let this thing amble away.

She glanced back at the forest. Just what was taking them so long? "Ai!" she bellowed. "I could use some help!" With a flap of her wings, Askeda jumped back on the crab's back. She raised her sword above her head and brought it down toward the crab's head, or at least where she thought the crab's head ought to be.

"Arr, just try not t' hit th' engine," Cogbeard said, with another cutlass at the ready, "but otherwise, give 'em hell!" He immediately pulled out his pistol, and shot at Azatha.

She effortlessly dodged the shot, as it vaporized a panel on the ceiling. "Too slow!" she said, tauntingly. "And you?" she said to Adrian, "try me." Her right hand formed into a tentacle, and shot directly at Adrian, attempting to punch him into the wall with the force of a pickup truck. It'll break through a panel if he dodges.

Meanwhile, Jarla ran behind a control station for cover, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

(Waiting on the stranger for D3, and Layi for Nulbarak Island.)

"Eh. I do my work in the shadows. The enemy is the government, and we're not ready to war with it directly, but we'll be happy to bathe in the blood of corrupt politicians when the time comes. For now, we do what we can, but I can still die. And I don't really feel okay with that. If I'm dead, I can't do my job, and they'll have a hard time finding anyone to replace me. That's not pride. There just aren't people willing to do it."

Friedrich's lunch was complete. He took out a handkerchief and wiped his hands. "If they find out what I'm doing, there's nowhere to run, so might as well go out with dignity. But because of the nature of my... crimes, I'll be left hanging out in the square for three days with a sign around my neck. Not a lot my pride can do for me after I'm dead, you know. To the Republic, I'm a special kind of murderer." He adjusted his glasses by the bridge as an excuse to hide his face. "I might have implied it before. Do you know what I do, Esa?"

Nothing happened right away, so Violet was kind of disappointed, but maybe it just needed a little time. If it worked, the doctor might say something nice to her for once. Instead of things like be quiet or leave me alone or don't ask questions like that. She couldn't wait for him to come back.

"Thirty years? I'd expect technology to change quite a bit in that amount of time. What do people do with these television things, anyway? Are they supposed to catch ghosts?"

[Quantum Princess, D3 Hallway]

The stranger was bound by the laws of the stolen powers, and so nothing happened. The stranger was visibly annoyed by this. And also by being set alight, though the stranger was soon extinguished by transforming into light. In this form, the stranger charged Bernhard — unless he had a way to stop a being of pure light, the stranger would get in melee range, return to a physical form, and attempt to crush Bernhard's throat.

Esa tilted her head and said, "From what you told me, you mostly deal with population issues. Preventing unwanted births and so forth. I understand that while mixing up redfern pills to prevent pregnancy and ending one already begun if it's early is something any capable apothecary can do, ending a pregnancy later on requires special training." She looked at Friedrich with mild bemusement. "It is training almost always taken by women where I come from, and they usually work for the government, ending unlicensed pregnancies, but I will not question you on it." Then, completely failing to draw the connection a Westerner might find obvious, she asked, "but what is this of murder? You seem a poor murderer to me."

Her eyes darted between the floor and the painting. Something about them was really starting to bug her. To herself, she muttered, "I wonder..." Then she knelt beside the floor, stuck a coin in the gap, and began to experimentally pry at it.

[Nulbarak Island, Forest]

"Nah," Layi said, "I don't think Askeda understands the concept of 'retreat'." She looked back. "You should, uh, help. I'm kind of..." she glanced at Tamara. "New plan. I help, you make sure the girl doesn't destroy herself with that magic." She looked apologetically at Tamara. "I've done all I can for you. But someone has to keep Askeda alive." Layi knew that once the dangerous powers of magic were involved, she was well out of her league. Especially when those powers were being wielded by a woman barely grown. How had she even received magic? Who thought giving an eager and temperamental woman — nay, girl! — magical power was a good idea? Or were things different where Tamara came from?

Deciding she'd worry about the (relatively) more mundane problem of the giant crustacean for now, she headed out towards Askeda, crossbow at the ready. She was soon was at the edge of the forest, and started harassing the crab with shots aimed at its vulnerable spots, managing a surprisingly good rate of fire for her weapon. "Askeda, you are the fourth craziest reptile I've ever known! Got any suggestions I can help with?"

[Big Kahuna]

Regina gave a surprised expression when Coprea sat across fron her like the earlier incident was nothing. She wasn't particularly upset, but she studied the angel before replying.

"My name's Regina. Cutting myself open isn't the only thing I can do. Granted, I prefer to do that because it let's me do stuff with my organs, if you got a glimpse of that earlier. Digestive organs are easier to use the way I did, since you can't exactly do a lot with most other organs. Not exactly sure how I would attack someone with any other internal system."

[Quantum Princess Engine Core]

Adrian wasn't able to avoid the tentacle, slamming into the wall behind him. It didn't really harm him either, as he managed to get back up with no issue.

He chuckled in his dark, twisted voice, "You really think that hurt?" He jested as he leaped to strike.

Virgil also worked to attack, blades fingers forward and katana at the ready.
