I have an "Ultimate Research Document" on Google Drive that might have something you could use, but I'll wait till you answer [up]'s question before that, they might have a better answer than dry academic research.

[up][up]I guess I just want to make sure they think twice about TERF talking points. I'm already worried that my cousin has fallen into it, since he showed up for Christmas one year complaining about parents who let their kids decide their gender identity. And I got into an argument about bathroom access for trans women at one point.

I am going to be frank, in a way that I hope doesn't sound too discouraging.

Educating people against their will, no matter how informative, entertaining, logical, well-founded, artistical, and amazing it is, tends to not work. Regressives and Conservatives already perceive LGBT to be forced upon them enough without someone approaching them with "I want to show you something educational..."

People change and learn out of need.

They do not directly or obviously benefit from learning how to not discriminate, and in fact some would find harrowing to be confronted with the fact their actions hurt people and foster their death, even.

Though educating them is important, more relevant than that is your well being and peace in what mindset to approach this with. This is derived from a lot of context, which for obvious reasons one can't, won't, and shouldn't ask for through this medium.

The United Kingdom LGBT foundation can be contacted at 0345 3 30 30 30, which is the first support link in the UK I found. They will have far more on hands and culturally relevant experience than I can offer and would suggest ringing them up.

Many others are also familiar thanks to Harris Bomberguy, with Mermaids UK, which you can contact at 0808 801 0400. They specialize more in children, but these groups tend to form networks and if anything they can direct you to ask to someone they know.

For psychological help, the UK hs some psychologists linked in the Albert Ellis Institute "Find a Therapist" tool which you can access here. They are not free but you can still ring them up see if they can reccomend someone closer to you as they are likely going to be overbooked and far from you.

Ok, dunno if this is any help to you, it's a broader Leftist "Ultimate Research Document" about a bunch of things but there is a hefty chunk there about trans issues.

[up]Thanks!

[up][up]Yeah, I wasn't really planning on directly shoving materials into their faces (though I probably made it sound like I wanted to do that), more citing it in conversation so I'm better-informed about more specific things, though I'll definitely show them if necessary. Plus, I know for a fact that my family isn't bad, they're adaptable; they're broadly good with just about everything except - possibly - this one thing. :V

There's Philosophy Tube's "Transphobia: An Analysis". Does give analogues and comaprisons that seem british so it may at least give you an idea as to how to broach those subjects if in hot water.

Still suggest ringing up the professionals over anything.

I understand. Just to be clear, I myself am not Trans, but I still find it pretty hurtful on a personal level to hear about or see transphobia, since I've considered the possibility in the past - so if things had turned out differently, then... yeah (in all honesty I'm probably gender-apathetic; most people I know online use they/them, if you were curious). Plus, even if I was confidently Cis it's still generally shitty, to state the obvious. So I just want to make sure it doesn't pop up unexpectedly around me. But yes, thanks for the information!

I know that feeling too, though I've come out recognizing myself as gender nonconforming but cis at the end of the day, I have gone through periods of gender identity questioning due to poor mentorship and misogyny that have given me a degree of empathy for other people going through these kinds of experiences. I feel the sooner people stop caring about gender roles in general, the easier it will be for at least some portion of trans people. If that's a thing they can parse, maybe it will be a good place to start on the subject of transphobia.

The lower chamber of the Swiss parliament has approved "marriage for all" with a 2/3 majority, as well as sperm donations for lesbians. Now it needs to pass the upper chamber where it'll probably pass with a lesser margin, and possibly a referendum.

(Notably, one Gay Conservative voted against the last item because there is no equivalent for gay men, such as surrogate pregnancy or egg donations. The head of the LGBT rights organization whose name I forget doesn't find this a problem as these things aren't allowed for anyone)

I genuinely did not know Switzerland did not allow for gay marriage. I always assumed it was you know. Ahead of its time and stuff. Being Switzerland.

Switzerland is very small c conservative, change takes a long time to arrive there, one canton didn’t give women the right to vote in local election until it was ordered to by the Swiss supreme court in 1990.

Mostly the fact it is one of the "nordic countries" which are known for their progressivism. If I am not mistaken, it's Denmark that's been at the forefront if not one of the first nations to legalize same sex unions and such. So for a nearby neighbor that is generally known for sharing a lot of values in that being like that is a bit odd.

Not necesarily surprising - every nation is with its hyper conservative branch. And Switzerland does have...a fame. But it is still a bit odd to hear of them this late in the subject of marriage.

Oh. Goddammit I always get those mixed up.

In Spanish (my native language), Switzerland is "Suiza".

And Sweden is "Suecia".

I am already an idiot, making things sound similar is enough to confuse me.

One absurd view I heard about LGBT groups was that they are not natural. That, with emphasis on the gay people, the LGBT groups existence is against what nature intended. I mean what the f**k?

It makes about as much sense as the other justifications they have for being anti-LGBTQ. Which is to say none.

My understanding is that the overwhelming majority of animal species who engage in sexual intercourse have a percentage of their overall population who are non-hetero. Somewhere between 5% and 15% is the usual norm, based on the numbers I've seen. (To note a commonly cited example: bonobos, who have a lot of social bonding behaviors centered on sexual activity, are an extreme outlier.)

Not that actual science gets in the way of the deniers, unfortunately.

Oh they love to twist that in "clever" ways, such as "Ah! But psycopaths are also natural!" and then pat themselves on the back, smugly grinning as their FACTS ANF LOGIC have equiparated psycopathy to homosexuality for an online argument.

No.

It's not worth debating those.
