Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Back from babysitting. Another E.T. ripoff? How did that turn out? Anything particularly weird or standout about it?

[up]There wasn't as much of the knockoff E.T. creature as you would have hoped for. Its name was "Kirby," and the only real standout moment was the creature's introduction, when a terran character who had already met and befriended the two humanoid girls carries a rifle and believes he's protecting them from a possible grizzly bear attack. After some brief "comedic hijinks," the creature stands on one leg and props the rest of its weight on the rifle, leading to one of the alien kids scolding, "Oh, Kirby, stop being so cute."

That's all there is to really say. One star.

This has got to be absolutely awful.

Just came across it on YouTube last evening. It also happens to have been subjected to some scathing criticism in a review on Something Awful

The Case For: If you're anywhere near as high as the main characters, you might actually enjoy yourself (Note: none of this is possible).

The Case Against: You have eyes, ears, and some kind of connection between those things right? Yeah, case closed.

I'm definitely gonna need to find a moment to watch this one on my own. I hope anyone else watching this can survive The Lucky Dragon.

Three people who aren't part of our group, but are members of a Discord server I'm on, joined us for this one. (This increased our number of viewers from 4 to 7; at one point, one person left shortly before another joined, so we had 8 people participating overall.)

That was certainly strange. The story probably makes more sense if you're familiar with Chinese fairytales. It even got occasionally disturbing, like with the dragon's eyes being stolen.

And I laughed at an intentionally funny scene where the villain, having the dragon's eyes and now magically having X-ray vision, spotted a dinosaur fossil by looking through rock, and thought, "What a strange looking creature." Yes, I actually laughed at one of this horrible movie's jokes. I feel dirty.

Unanimous    X   .

Btw, from clicking the link to tonight's movie, I saw another one on You Tube on the side, that I'd heard of before. Ronal the Barbarian. It's not a kid movie at all, but very crude and rude. It seems like it could be fun. A lot of people in the comments section of that saying things like "the look on parents faces in the theaters when they realised what they took their kids to watch" and such.

Here's a trailer.

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo...

It's Kung Fu Friday, and I know I left one movie trailer on the playlist last night, but it's just occurred to me now that we've shown it here before, and I don't think that would be totally worthwhile in this particular case...

...But I found something even more spectacular for tonight in the form of something called Overkill. Check this out for yourselves:

Sean swapped the movie on us, but this one should be better than his original plan. It's Overkill!

With the usual Kung Fu Friday playlist before it.

[up]So great.

Anyway, I can give some assurance that this isn't a Troma film. In fact, it's principally a British comedy (hopefully slightly more entertaining than "Mr. Blobby"), helmed by the director of 1980's Flash Gordon ([awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome]), with American distribution handled by Universal Pictures.

Although, I'll admit that just a glimpse at the trailer really does make this seem on the level with Mr. Blobby.

The general story involves a group of four very-human, very-English aliens in a spaceship docked at a "refueling station" when three of these characters start fiddling with the ship's controls and jettisoning themselves (minus one of their compatriots) to Earth.

Here, on this little blue planet, the trio become instant-celebrities that sell out auditoriums just for "fool hu-mans" who want to see them. The one they left behind, the most "sensible" of their group, finds other means of transport to our planet, is not afforded any celebrity, and generally has a terrible time.

And now, for the first time, we are bringing to you the full story of what happened on that fateful day. We are giving you all the evidence, based only on the secret testimonies of the miserable souls who survived this terrifying ordeal. The incidents, the places, my friend, we cannot keep this a secret any longer. Let us punish the guilty. Let us reward the innocent. My friend, can your heart stand the shocking facts about Morons from Outer Space?

Going on by the Disney discussion that was going on in the chat last night, do you think we can also do some of their terribad feature-length adaptations of their theme park rides? There's the infamously awful The Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Tilly as Madame Leota, and Superman II 's Terence Stamp, the latter of which gives a deliciously hammy role as the butler of the titular mansion in an otherwise pedestrian plot where a workaholic and neglectful father who bumbles into the iconic mansion and has to survive the 999 Grinning Ghosts, in addition to The Country Bears, which stars Christopher Walken Christopher Walken-ing among lifeless animatronics and bears, and a very dull made-for-TV movie based on the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror starring a young Drew Barrymore that has nothing to do with either the ride or the Twilight Zone.

If you want to suggest a Disney movie (or any other kind of movie), petition one movie, and we can try to come to a general consensus on that one item.

If we're gonna start hurling out multiple suggestions all at once from every which direction (I thought last night's Disney topic was originally about direct-to-video animated "cheapquels," anyway), then we're not gonna get anywhere.

Okay, I've decided. The one I want to recommend is 2002's The Country Bears, based on the no-longer-existing Country Bear Jamboree attraction of the Disney Parks in a plot that would oddly be used more effectively in Disney's own The Muppets nine years later-that being a die-hard fan of the titular band tries to convince the old members to put past hostilities and egos aside to try and save their old performance hall. Aside for some very memorable moments by Coven regular Christopher Walken, as highlighted here:

it has been pretty much been derided as a by-the-numbers snoozefest of a "getting-the-band-back-together" story. It was a bomb, with a 35 mil budget that only raked in 16.8 mil total, and has gathered rather scathing reviews such as:

"So awkward, so leaden, so virtually laugh-free that it's guaranteed to bring down the Happy Meals it's being marketed with."-Ann Hornday, Washington Post

"The Country Bears has no scenes that will upset or frighten young viewers. Unfortunately, there is almost nothing in this flat effort that will amuse or entertain them, either."-C.W. Nevius, San Francisco Chronicle

"Entertains not so much because of its music or comic antics, but through the perverse pleasure of watching Disney scrape the bottom of its own cracker barrel."- John Monaghan, Detroit Free Press

"The formidable technical skills in The Country Bears must not be allowed to distract from the film's terminal inanity."-Roger Ebert

"To call this movie ill-conceived and poorly structured is to vastly understate its shortcomings."-Jay Boyar, Orlando Sentinel.

[up]That's some quality Christopher Walken right there.

Anyway, I'm still not entirely sure of the origins for tonight's movie, but Bonsai's mention that this somewhat deceptive movie duped a lot of parents into taking young children to see this seems to be worth the price of wanting to tear out one's own eyes.

Brace yourselves tonight for Ronal the Barbarian...

Interesting to know that in the original Danish, this movie has Brigitte Nielsen and Lars Mikkelsen (brother of Mads) in its cast and the English dub has... Dee Snider(!).

[up]Dee will do anything. I just paid him a thousand bucks for a 20-minute camera interview only a few weeks back (or half of that fee, anyway).

I also noticed none other than the great Secundus himself, Sven-Ole Thorsen, was among the voice actors (at least for the Danish language track).

That was quite the divisive movie. Lew saying he wished he'd voted higher than X would have raised the average, but it would have been a 2 either way. Wow.

Yeah, the cursing and a lot of the vulgar humor was overdone, but I also found some parts very funny, and the final boss's "WHAT THE FUCK?!" hilarious.

So Prom has been letting us all know that this movie carries a reputation.

This movie so abysmal, according to his assessment, that we should all heed his warnings and not take this lightly. We'd be foolish to treat this like any other bad movie.

I don't know, though, we've watched Casper Van Dien in Dracula 3000. THAT is easily one of the worst, absolute dumbest sci-fi/horror movies in existence, and our collective verdict was still a [awesome]. Still, if Casper Van Dien could possibly star in an even worse movie, this is definitely looking like a solid contender, and surviving anything worse than Dracula 3000 would certainly qualify as a rite of passage.

Brace yourselves tonight for Skeleton Man.
