Such is life.

Also. LATAM denounced a Youtuber for diffamation after he said people to not fly with them. Poor Hugo, he really didn't say anything gross about them.

I remenber in another tread when I compared latin america relationship with east asia in term of passive agresiveness between one and each other.

now that I have the time I want to clarify: imagine eas asia, now take all the pasive agresive douchebashery between themselves and replace with periodic stament of brotherhood that dosent mean anything at all and tendecy to punch ourselves and you more or less got it.

that is latin america, at least for me.

Well, each new day in Brazil is another embarassment over our dear Presidente.

Today there's a big, nation-wide paralization of public universities and colleges over the outrageous budget cuts.

Which doesn't affect me directly because I'm a Welfare Parasite sucking on the teats of the taxpayers' money and attending a private college with goverment money, but my sister does journalism on a local federal university and she's pissed.

Anyway, about the Machu Pichu airport, maybe it's not malice, maybe it is just pure stupidity and ignorance (which I always thought to be far more destructive forces).

[up]At least they have anime and martial arts movies; we have to settle with telenovelas.

Really it's been like that nearly every single day since he was elected. Just a constant string of awful decisions that will have severe negative effects and will take decades to recover from, if those efforts aren't sabotaged by electing another idiot like him in the future.

And to be fair, you should exclude Brazil from that comparison: we make it very clear we don't give a shit about the rest of Latin America and would rather Europe/US-senpai noticed us.

Obviously I don't think that is a good thing, but I don't know which mode would be appropriate to pothole here.

[up]My mood considerably improved these past few days when I desided to turn off my news feed.

I know I shouldn't do that, but, well, there's a reason they say "ignorance is bliss".

I am a public university student sustained on a scholarship. I didn't go to the protests literally because I'm too broke to go, so the rule of thumb remains fuck Bolsonaro and my utmost hope is that this segues to a full-blown strike.

In a bizarre way, the Brazilian situation show that is closer to be a First World country than the rest of the region.

Oh well, at least we here are on a jailing spree here, with what all the corrupt politicians being thrown into preventive prison, it’s a nice change of pace after years of impunity.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, maybe we should try to find the absolutes that tie us.

[up][up]In the worst way possible, but alas.

[up]Not to be a pessimistic killjoy, but in my experience corrupt politicians being locked away doesn't solve the problem of systemic corruption, it just means other corrupt politicians will get in their place.

You can cut off as many rotten branches as you wish, but if the roots are still in place...

Trust me, I wish I knew.

Maybe I am being too pessimistic, but I see corruption so entangled in my country's political scene I find it hard to even hope one day we'll actually figure this mess out.

Maybe peruvians like yourselves will have an easier time, I certainly hope so.

I think things can get better but it requires a consistent effort to improve things and people not wanting to do a 180 to go back to things that are proven to not work, just because their situation is not so great in that particular moment. People want easy solutions to complex problems even though that's not how it works - institutional corruption is not something that can be fixed overnight.

That was one of the more common arguments in favor of Bolsonaro, "Come on, PT has clearly not worked out, isn't it time to try something new?". They couldn't imagine him being any worse than PT, which just speaks to their naivete.

It can always get worse.

That's not actually meant to be pessimistic, merely cautious. Never delude yourself into thinking a situation cannot possibly get any worse.

periodic statement of brotherhood

East Asian countries have spent so much of their history killing the shit out of each other (or themselves) that they would never be able to make such a statement with a straight face.

Thank you.

Also, while we're on Bolsonaro's claims that the protesters are a bunch of lazy bums subsisting on misappropriated government funds, here's a reminder of the latest Bolsonaro scandal: Bolsonaro family a bunch of lazy bums subsisting on misappropriated government funds. (links in Portuguese). Basically the accusation is that they're effectively a mobster family employing money laundering, nepotism and illicit money from paramilitary militias to get rich (link in English).

Also, fun fact, Bolsonaro apparently has the lowest approval rate (34%) in first 100 days period of his presidency in the history of the country (although I'm guessing nobody was keeping tabs on the approval rates of Floriano Peixoto tongue).

I know this is saying this quite weird, but here on Peru, I'm actually...quite fine with my Center Right President?

Is weird, you can hear me complain about the Right in other threads, but I'm actually quite Ok with the EVIL NEOLIBERALS. They weren't my first choice but they were fine.

Their biggest mistake was trying to get a truce with the Fujimorists, seriously, literally trying to negociate with Dictator apologists. That was dumb AF.

I could forgive them because at that moment the congress had kept the country in a complete lockdown because how dare they lose the presidential election for the third time in a row, not to mention that the evidence to trial most of the corrupt politicians here didn’t come out until the Keiko backstabbed her brother Kenji and his group and knocked PPK out of the presidency, and even then we still have some white-collar criminals shielded by the Congress (which I expect to be dissolved sooner or later).

Besides, the Centre-Right (and the centre in general here) have shown to be reasonable so far, if a bit boring; and while they are not exciting or inspiring as the parties closer to the ends of the political spectrum are, they keep the economy safe and sound, which is the basic to get our country in a better position. And aside from that, with people from both Right and Left being jailed for crimes of corruption and God knows how many more to come, I think I know where my political stance will remain for the time being.

Edit:

Oh, and Kazuya, being closer to the right does not immediately mean you are a neoliberal, that was Fujimori’s stunt and admittedly it was needed at some point (though no longer) to get things back on track after Alan Garcia left the economy in ruins.

Wait, are you saying me that Neoliberal isn't just a insult but rather a actual thing???.

TBH I'm not much into ideology regarding Economic Issues. Is actively harmful put any ideology in such a thing.

If there a area where I really start to act as a ideologe, is Foreign Policy, and I really can't say too much because Peru be Peru.

Though if certain situations with Venezuela and Colombia escalate...IMO, Peru should be grateful to be able to do something.

In some sport news: Mexican-American heavyweight boxer Andy "The Destroyer" Ruiz Jr became the first Mexican/Mexican-American heavyweight champion in history after scoring a historic upset against reigning unified champ Anthony Joshua.

Andy Ruiz Jr. was a underdog of 21-1 odds, making this the biggest upset of the sport since Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson in 1989 (with odds of 42-1 to Tyson). He now holds three of the four belts in the heavyweight division, being the new unified champion.

Mexicans, before today, had a champion in every single weight division except heavyweight (due Latinos having generally smaller builds ill-suited for the division). With Andy Ruiz Jr crowned as heavyweight champ, they could be said to now have a champion in ever single weight division.

Side-note: Mexican and Mexican-Americans are often put in the same category in boxing historiography, depending on their own individual identification via their personal billing (so if the fighter chooses to bill himself as "from the United States and Mexico..." or even just "from Mexico..." rather than "From the US..."). Andy Ruiz Jr. bills himself as being from the United States and Mexico (and both anthems are sung before his fights, including this one), so he's considered to fit in both. He's also a first-generation immigrant, at any rate.

Fujimorists, literally named in honor of a dictator that closed the congress, are acussing Vizcarra of doing the same.
