[up]Just pointing out its not always rape search "consentacles" if your feeling brave.

Second we are waiting for the fast one to tell us what to do abut it so lets move on to other stuff for the time being.

...I live in a strange world, so to me, naughty tentacles is like sex pollen or something. You can't endorse it because it doesn't exist in real life. I would like to make the parental love triangle trope in the YKKTW. Is everyone ok with this?

[up] This is not about endorsing, sir or ma'am, it is about categorizing a widely recognized writing trope.

It's existence in Real Life is not relevant, as tropes refers to the writing conventions of media (albeit it is not a trope yet experienced in reality, at least to anyone's knowledge), and their existence in fiction is undeniable.

So, that said, this cannot simply be ignored, and if we acknowledge similar tropes like Tentacle Rope (a somewhat less squicky, more family friendly sub trope of "Naughty Tentacles"), then we must invariably acknowledge the existence of the trope that was its parent in some form.

Failure to do so is intellectually wrong (it exists as a writing convention and is even an entire genre of media, so denying it is patently ridiculous), morally wrong (in fact, morals have no place in an objective discussion of writing devices, as many writing conventions are going to offend someone, so debating morality is pointless), and most of all, the problems with the trope were external coding issues that triggered the wrath of Google, and the page becoming a perversion target.

Again, it would be best as a locked stub that merely explains the trope and its impact on media, with the coding of the page modified to not trigger Google's ire and given a less provocative name as further insurance, at least in my view.

Until a moderator (or the Fast One himself) weighs in, this discussion is probably going nowhere, and I respectfully suggest we wait for official input.

[up]I believe that Tentacle Rope is despite the name more closely related to combat tentacles.

I agree with the rest of your statement.

[up] Point noted, Shadis. However, Tentacle Rope and "Naughty Tentacles" do overlap in terms of function, except one is simply used for binding (true, Combat Tentacles have very similar purposes), but the naughty variety often uses the binding as a setup for unsavory activity, or even as part of the unsavory actions involving the appendages in question.

Regardless, that adds even more weight to why we should keep "Naughty Tentacles" in some form. If we have other Tentacle related tropes that details their various applications, we need to have one for when they used for dark, unsavory purposes, just to cover all the bases.

But, until we get official input, I guess we'll have to wait.

Yeah, external linking is more an issue of code, which is Fast Eddie's thing.

Which doesn't say much, because then you're relying on his skills, which have been called into question before.

Just to clear one misconception here...

Google was mad because there were idiots who thought linking pictures of tentacle rape was a good idea. Those outbound links got under their skin. That has nothing to do with Eddie's coding skills.

[up] Hm, so should a possible solution be to just ban all off-site image links from the page, and ban the perverted morons who chooses to disobey?

Locking and stubbing the page would probably be better. With a new name and with a note that no examples may be added and the page will remain locked because of rampant abuse.

But locking would defy the main point of having the trope. I prefer "watch".

Then even if it does get out of control it can just be locked.

[up][up] Not entirely. It could still be listed on a works page as a trope.

Rpgingmaster Since: Jan, 2001
#1237: May 29th 2012 at 6:09:16 AM

[up] Good point.

Then how about this. Very strict rules are established on usage of the trope, like so:

1. If listed on a works page, keep it to the point and avoid perversion beyond what's necessary to describe the usage.

2. NO LINKING TO PICTURES OFFSITE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

3. Violation of the first two rules will result in a permaban. However, as a caveat, the second rule is non negotiable, whereas the first rule is only considered a violation if the use of the trope description is obviously meant to be crude beyond what's necessary.

....okay, that's not perfect, and yeah, the renamed, sanitized trope would most likely be better off locked, but it could also be used as a troll bug lamp, helping the mods find the obvious misfits and chop them off the site.

Of course, I'd personally be happy if, bare minimum, we applied the same treatment we gave the Hentai page and left it at that, since (to my knowledge) we haven't had any outstanding problems regarding it after it's mod clean and lock treatment.

I don't agree with the endorsement argument myself, I was just noting that you can't 'endorse' tentacles raping people as uh...that doesn't happen. I'm a lady.

If the external links was the issue with Naughty Tentacles, I'd be fine bringing it back with a clean/stubbing and lock.

[up][up] First off ma'am, this discussion aside, I don't endorse "Naughty Tentacles" myself, and for the record, I'm a guy, and on a personal note, I find it as disgusting as you do.

However, on topic, it exists, no denying it, and since it's a legitimate trope, we might as well try to keep it in some way, if for no other reason than giving a definition.

That said, even though it's rare, "Naughty Tentacles" can apply to men as well (though in fairness, most media with this trope involves women), so this isn't a gender specific trope per se.

[up] Yeah, I don't see this surviving without the cleaning/stubbing/locking treatment, and that's only AFTER a rename to be safe.

[up][up] It's his website. Every other troper or even moderator can lobby all we wish to have something, but if he puts his foot down, he wins because he has final veto power and we all have to abide by it, and on this subject he explicitly stated he didn't want this trope back under this name.

Note: That means he wouldn't be averse to the trope coming back per se, but it will never come back without a different name bare minimum.

It's the most accurately descriptive name I know that covers all forms of the trope, both porn-y and non-porny. I also doubt that its hitting anything on the Rneaming Guidelines that counts as a good reason for suggesting a rename, so unless he explicitly pulls/pulled admin fiat (which, AFAIK, he hasn't), I'm sad to say that there are no grounds for a rename.

@1237: I really doubt a permaban would result from violating that rule. An Edit Suspenison would be better suited for that.

I don't see why the name would be an issue. It is hard to find a word much milder, tamer and family friendly than "Naughty".

Well, I have a even milder name:

"Indecent Tentacle Usage"

or, here's an alternate title:

"Prurient Prehensile Anatomy"

Either one is even more sterile than "Naughty Tentacles".
