Google is lying to you. I first thought you were putting Enrish for "sleep" above that fan. Wrong diacritic, but you wrote "suliibu" in katakana above that second fan.
I'd put the proper characters for manga up, but my work computer doesn't have the appropriate fonts added.
EDIT: Ninja'd. Though since "manga" is a native Japanese word, you'd use hiragana and not katakana for it when not using kanji.

Yes, hiragana and katakana only. Still, it was actually easier to fit the Japanese on those icons than the English.

For the Japanese anime and manga badges, why not just make the manga one greyscale?

We can have more than one badge for a fandom. These aren't going to be like the namespace icons where there's only one choice and we use that everywhere.

Got everything updated, including changing the opening a bit by replacing the "let's make some badges" with general info about the badges.

That's not katakana. That's kanji, and editing kanji on 24 x 24 sounds nightmarish.
Anime is written in katakana by default because it is not Japanese in origin.
