@X 2 X That helps, though I meant it beyond that. I feel that factor, amongst other things, helps him feel like he's an actual individual as opposed to just the archetype. He isn't paint-by-the-numbers but likewise has a sense of familiarity in other respects. Plus he does do what's required of the mentor character narratively.

He's just a character I can appreciate on multiple levels.

I even saw someone earlier today praise Asta as one of the best shonen MC’s right now.

Thank God The Promised Neverland & Dr Stone are getting anime’s cause those series have awesome leads.

Honestly, I don't find Asta as nearly as obnoxious as most people seem to. Honestly, I'd say he's actually better than most characters of his archetype like Luffy.

@LSBK While I don't think he's better than Luffy personally, I said the same last week that he's not as obnoxious. A part of me wonders at this point if the series terrible first impressions color the present attitude with how it's mocked.

@ Great: Well, it's Fandom, so you've got to take their opinions and various "hot takes" with a grain of salt (even though their interviews and articles on various anime/manga-based topics are pretty interesting and well-researched for the most part).

@ Prime: A fair assessment I'd agree with.

As for Asta, his bad first impression definitely didn't do him any favors. He's far more stomachable, even mildly interesting, when he's being introspective and not just screaming his head off, but this is shonen, and Black Clover has to stick to the usual formula for its lead.

@ Beary: The price for cutting through dimensions was his arm length apparently.

That's not much of a surprise, he's probably popular for the same reason vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream. He's such a boilerplate shonen protagonist, he ticks virtually every single box of what shonen protagonists are "supposed" to be.

I'll give credit, that was a nice ending and this arc was somewhat pleasant. Shame it took us 40 some odd episodes to get to a point where I'm not endlessly mocking it.

And the best part? That despair guy is dead. D-E-D, dead.

Yeah that sounds about right.

I even saw a list stating why he’s a better character than Deku & it was essentially how he fulfills more wish-fufillment tropes a lot more & more easily like being a Chick Magnet or constantly impressing everyone with his “might”.

While shitting on Deku just because he’s more emotional & cause of “nepotism”.

This was around the time the show was supposed to end before it got renewed as an ongoing.

He comes back.

@ Rojixus: Likewise, this is why Black Clover itself, for all the scorn and mockery it incites, is still very popular within the pages of Shonen Jump. It being a formulaic mash-up of other shonen series, while not good for its overall quality in the eyes of many, does make it something of a Gateway Series for the genre, especially for those who have little prior experience with shonen.

Had a feeling you were going to burst his bubble that way. XD

@Slim: If that was supposed to be the proper ending, I may just end my willingness to watch the show after the next few episodes. I think I've had my fill for this.

Anyway, poor Ikalgo.

The reasoning being for his mad actions is that he was actually a spirit possessing a body but the possession process was incomplete & flawed so he was driven batshit insane but the current process that brings him back was complete so he comes back without the insanity.

Your mileage may vary for that.

Oh shit he’s found out.

I heard the next episode or the one after that is really awful so that be recommended.
