There's this guy in one of my classes who is pretty much the exact opposite of a hipster. At first I thought he was just mainstream, but now it's become clear to me that he's much more than that.

While a hipster is someone who aggressively acts against mainstream culture, an anti-hipster is aggressively for it.

This is different from just being a mainstream person, instead of just enjoying mainstream culture, you have to fight for it. Most mainstream people aren't anti-hipsters, they just sort of go with what's cool. An anti-hipster will instead tell you why it's cool an why you should be doing what everyone else does.

If you think one of your friends might be an anti-hipster, listen closely for these key identifying phrases or behaviors:

  • "[Popular Work of Fiction] isn't overrated."

  • "You just hate [Popular Thing] because it's cool."

  • Can only genuinely enjoy something if others are enjoying it.

  • May be indistinguishable from a hipster in areas with large hipster populations.

I'd say that sounds like a sheep, but actually that wraps all the way back around to sounding pretty original. So, good for him, I guess?

"[Popular Work of Fiction] isn't overrated."

"You just hate [Popular Thing] because it's cool."

So he's an intelligent individual who doesn't buy into stupid concepts like things being "over" or "under"rated? Good for him, then.

go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagine

I'm so hipster, hipsters are too mainstream for me. Thus I go full circle and enjoy mainstream entertainment. Am I an anti-hipster?

Isn't an anti-hipster merely a hipster going backward in time? tongue
