X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Ewing is a guy who strikes me as understanding even the most powerful, super, larger than life characters are still human. Even when they're not.

And humans are horny.

Also, good for Magneto for knowing about aftercare. We stan a sexually literate king, as the kids say.

That's slightly unexpected, although I think they did promise a Wolverine arc at some point. And yes, the title and logo made me laugh. Part one out 13th October.

Axe number 5 cap gets a pick me up chat from one of the normal humans pots we have been getting from time to time. Nightcrawler then takes him to confront the progenitor... who immediately blasts them both. We get more attacks but almost everyone falls before they retreat. With only a few eggs left nightcrawler decides they need to resurrect not cyclops but... captain America.

[up]no. The eggs can work on anyone they have a psychic backup of and DNA from. They just use it on only mutants because the psychic backup is easier with cerebros and the DNA is provided by sinister

Oh right. That's why they were able to revive Wanda, who still isn't a mutant anymore. We have a precedent.

For whatever reason Legion of X got hit much harder than the other X-books by the distribution chain messes so we’re only getting the Legion vs. Uranos fight that was mentioned months ago right now, with them meeting at the end of the issue, with the fight being presumably in the next one.

Supposedly, Legion lost that one in seconds… and we get a possible explanation why. Because THIS issue’s big fight is Legion vs. Ora Serrata, and he’s forced to sacrifice a large number of his alters to her ability to erase anything she looks directly at from existence in order to defeat her.

It appears John Byrne has lost interest and motivation in continuing his X-Men webcomic 'Elsewhen'. He didn't plan on finishing it ahead of this retirement, so it's ending on a very inconclusive note as a result. The final page posted in August ended with Wolverine facing down three Doctor Dooms, and no, they were not doom bots for once

What Could Have Been: Byrne's running commentary on the final pages was that Doom was going to use Nightcrawler's powers to summon forth variants of himself from the multiverse so he could storm Mephisto's domain and retrieve Doom's mother

A conversation in the main Marvel thread the other day about how flawed the "world outside your window" concept is made me realize that a big reason I like Krakoa is that a "Great Society" story played even mostly positively is damn rare these days. I mean, "utopia" and "dystopia" are practically synonyms these days; the vast majority of Great Society narratives in fiction have the society's good qualities just existing as a smokescreen for its utterly evil ones. Sure, Krakoa has flaws, but there's a big difference between a flawed society and one that's hiding a secret so obviously reprehensible that it immediately makes the entire society not with it.

It reminds me a lot of Arthur C. Clarke's works, actually; his stories are often set in futuristic societies, that, while not complete utopias, are still pretty clearly framed as more desirable than reality. Where did that kind of story go, I wonder? Not gonna lie, it's kind of uncomfortable to me that dreaming of something better for yourself and the world tends to peg you as a fascist or a JRPG villain in fiction these days. [lol]

Krakoa does have a dark secret — the whole thing was Moira's trap for the Mutants — but even after it was discovered, the people of Krakoa are determined to make it work anyway.

Honestly after Sabretooth's series, it feels like Krakoa is teetering on the edge of something pretty momentous happening. I could definitely see regime change in its future.

Sabretooth definitely has the most negative depiction of Krakoa, with the revelation that apart from of course Mr. Creed himself, none of the Pit inmates did anything particularly bad, and were basically just made examples of as a flex of political muscle. Certainly sucks, but I actually enjoy seeing Krakoa develop as a society; we've had a number of repeals of unfair laws already ("no clones or alters" and "no precogs"), so I hope the Sabretooth developments lead to a reform or abolition of the Pit rather than the whole place being torched like some seem to want. tongue

Nightcrawler, Legion, and their crew are also strongly opposed to the Pit, and have accordingly founded a group of law enforcers that practice restorative rather than punitive justice, much as legal reform activists in the real world advocate. Again, it's a welcome nuance not seen in most modern Great Society stories.

Krakoa isn't a monolith at least, there are diverse opinions in it.

Granted in non-X books they are portrayed as more one-note but thats the fault of the writers.

The issues with Krakoa are also justified.

It was never intended to be a true functional society. It was just meant to be an attractive enough option to get all the Mutants in one place.

The growing pains it's going through now are due to people trying to make it work for real.

This is why I was surprised to see reviews of the first issue claim a 'mutant police' book was tone deaf in 2022. Legion of X is coming at things from a very different perspective.

There is a lesson there that not every story about law keepers of some kind has to be an allegory for US cops

There's a broad tendency on the Internet to assume everything is "like the US unless noted," even among people who aren't from there. I assume because the Internet's development itself has been mostly Amerocentric for decades.

[up][up] Its something they have to get regardless. Can you imagine limiting it is from a storytelling perspective that any sort of heroic vaguely law enforcement organization as a concept is rendered unusable simply because of the pigs in blue?

Its like we can't have vampire hunter stories because like hunters are on the side of order and that automatically makes them cops I guess......

[up] Americans are narcissists, they have a very "me, me, me" approach to things which has spread and is why its a well known stereotype.

No disagreement there. Just saying that posing "cops are bad" as a sentiment born purely out of US cops being bad and everyone being fixated on the US is rather inaccurate.
