X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

I haven't read much X-Men stuff and what I do know about the franchise comes mostly from the movies and cartoons, but at the shop I work at my friends are constantly talking about how Cyclops is a douche or asshole, which is pretty much the only thing I ever hear about him.

I've only ever read "God Loves, Man Kills" and "Utopia" and Cyclops didn't come off as what I'd call a "douche" in those*

or any of the films/cartoons I've seen. So is there something I haven't seen that has made this such a seemingly popular viewpoint?

[up] He's been flirting with a bit of Knight Templarism in recent years, and has currently pulled a borderline Faceā€“Heel Turn due to the corrupting influence of the Phoenix, but he's actually a fine character, I think, and future solicits show him de-Phoenixed and (hopefully) sane.

"Utopia" is actually the storyline most commonly cited by "douche Cyclops" proponents, so if you liked him there you should be fine.

He's a bit of an asshole, and he's firmly an Anti-Hero at the moment, but he's my favorite X-man. I don't think he's ever been cooler than he was during Utopia/Second Coming.

But yeah, Scott's a prick.

Scott's always been kind of a douche. That doesn't mean he's an asshole or a jerk or anything. He's just an uptight wad. I do love him, though. My second favourite character, right behind Shadowcat.

And yeah, he's been awesome for a while now. Since the late-'90s, when he came back from being possessed by Apocalypse. It loosened him up a lot. Even more since becoming effectively the leader of the mutant race, he's become a hardcore badass.

Something I've been wondering for a while: Morrison claimed he wanted a seventeen-year run just like Claremont, but got into a fight with Jemas and jumped ship to DC after far too short a time. What I wonder is, if he had gotten a run that long, d'you think he'd have dragged out the Sublime Myth Arc through all of it? Because much as I like the story, even I think that'd be the very definition of Arc Fatigue.

I imagine he would've made Sublime a key part of his run throughout. And much as I enjoyed his run, I thought Sublime was an idiotic idea, so I'm glad we at least didn't have to put up with it as a major deal for any longer. Be interesting to know where he'd planned on going, though.

[up] I think I heard he had more planned for Jean; apparently he didn't want to kill her and even intended her to be the victor in the love triangle, but the bosses felt she was Too Powerful to Live, and I can actually see where they'd have a point; it's demonstrated at many places in Morrison's run that master-level telekinesis (with a little Phoenix juice) treads pretty dang close to omnipotence.

So, I realized something today that probably should've been fairly obvious: it's the 2010s now, and that has a lot of meaning, not the least of which being that it's now the 50th anniversary of the '60s. Turning 50 this decade are hippies, The Beatles, and, of yeah, the Marvel Universe. So, naturally, we've been seeing a lot of Milestone Celebrations from that selfsame company recently. Last year, the Fantastic Four were completely reorganized, and this year, Spider-Man got a sidekick and is (according to the hype) headed for his most ambitious story yet, with issue 700. So, assuming the Maya were wrong*

, the X-Men should be next. Basically, what I'm asking in this block of text is:

What do you think they'll do for the 50th anniversary of the X-Men?

I think All-New may be a part of it, for one, or at least buildup to it; it strikes me as a way of reuniting the original team that won't result in Tom Brevoort yelling at people.

Bit of an out of left field question, but I was working on a Brotherhood (Evoverse) Fic and I was wondering could someone maybe tell me how did Phantazia get her codename? It's not a very straightforward codename like Toad, Avalanche, Blob, and Pyro (or say like Sauron taken from the name of the villain in LOTR). It also doesn't sound like it has anything to do with her powers either. Code names typically relate to the character's powers, history, beliefs, a character trait, something.

The thing is along with it not really seeming to have anything to do with her powers "Phantazia" does not appear to be an actual word (tried to look it up, didn't find anything, maybe I missed something?)-it is however the name of a 1970's Jazz Album by Noel Pointer (so maybe she likes his music?).

[down]Just saying it now before anyone says anything I know Phantazia was never in Evolution I was just thinking of including her and wondered how she came up with her name.

I don't know about Evolution, but the comics say nothing about where her name came from. I guess she just thought it sounded cool.

Whoo! Claremont takes second! He was behind only Sandman, and leapfrogged the original Lee runs of Fantastic Four and Spider-Man and, most surprisingly to me, Moore's Swamp Thing.

Watchmen was intriguingly absent (possibly because it was too short to count as a "run"). And I will never get the appeal of Garth Ennis.

There was a discussion a while back about the cancellation/relaunch of Uncanny X-Force and the soliciting of Bishop in the first arc, with concerns that previous events following Messiah Complex were going to be swept under the rug so that he can be an X-Man again.

I just finished reading the first issue of Cable and the X-Force and noticed they talk a bit about the new direction for the two X-Force titles in the back of the book. Specifically, they had this to say for Uncanny:

" They will be plumbing the darkest, strangest, and most dangerous corners of the Marvel U. Their first adversary? Classic X-Man Bishop! Why would he be attacking his own friends? Find out next month!"

...so, yeah, I'd say that sounds a lot like Messiah Complex is being swept under the rug.

[up] Well I hope they don't just ignore his Heel turn. It sucked, but they should at least acknowledge it if they want to turn him back to Face.

So, there's been a lot of Nightcrawler-y things popping up lately. Darkholme, Waggoner, Mystique, Azazel, Bamfs, and the return of *sigh* Warren's Cheyarafim healing abilities. What's especially interesting is that they all seem to be converging on March and late February of next year. Hmm...

If anyone has read the new ANXM, can we talk about how horrible Wolverine is?

Especially since I'm pretty sure he's completely wrong about how it works. If he kills Young Scott, that doesn't bring Xavier back. It shouldn't even kill Adult Scott. It just means Young Scott is now dead. All he would do is create an alternate timeline where Scott was dead. He'd still be in the timeline where Scott's alive and Xavier's dead.

Though I suppose it depends on what rules of time travel Bendis felt like using.

But yeah, fuck Wolverine.

On the plus side, Kitty will finally be used again! Jason Aaron has completely wasted her in Wat XM. Bendis showed a solid understanding of her, and I have high hopes that she's going to be great in ANXM. I also kinda hope the teen X-Men keep calling her "Professor K."
