X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

OH YEAH: New X-Factor book by Leah Williams and David Baldeón.

But it’s mostly about a new team of Krakoan operatives, comprised of the speedy Northstar, one of Marvel’s earliest openly queer characters; the all-seeing Eye Boy; the telepathic Rachel Grey; the polymath Prodigy; the magnetic Polaris; and Daken, Wolverine’s disaster son. They are X-Factor, and their job is to investigate and confirm mutant deaths — but not to avenge them.
It look also look deeper into the Five and the Resurrection Process.

Surely they could have used any other mutant coming up with the idea of buying media/corps/schools.

Did they really have to use the Jewish mutant?

[up][up] Except for the fact that Magneto is one of the most complex Jewish characters in all of comic book history. I consider that a good thing.

By the way, Leah Williams has revealed on her Twitter that her book will tackle trans mutants who want their resurrected bodies to be a different gender.

Longtime X-Men Writer Fabian Nicieza Sells His First Novel, Suburban Dicks

The freshman novel by Nicieza is about two amateur sleuths, one a retired, pregnant FBI profiler and the other a former Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, who solve mysteries in their New Jersey town. The publishing company says the novel's duo will "reveal their community’s darkest secret while trying to reclaim their own identities in the process.”

Pretty cool. I've often seen writers go from books to comics (like Saladin Ahmed, Rainbow Rowell, Seanan McGuire), but I've rarely seen writers go from comics to books. It's happened (Peter David went from television to comics to books, I believe), but I haven't seen it that often.

Neil Gaiman is the best known example of someone starting in comics and then going onto novels (his first comic was 1986, his first prose was in '87 but his first proper book was 1990). I don't think it's that rare of thing, but wouldn't even know how to begin to measure it.

And now the mutants have a nation and one that is recognized by the UN.

Then we're back to a nation with only three exports. The UN won't give them money, it'll demand it in dues.

In Marauders, a CIA agent tasked with monitoring Krakoan ships also had their mother come back from total dementia (they use the phrase "back from the dead," although this is just metaphorical). So the drug is being more widely used than simply for rare forms of dementia — it looks like it's going to be used for all forms of dementia, Alzheimer's, etc.

Even if they sell it to everyone with dementia, it won't be more than tens of billions of dollars.

Three exports which will net them billions of dollars each.

The current biggest money making drug makes $13.6 billion a year and Krakoa has three of them. You seem to be thinking that "only tens of billions" is a bad thing, but they are using and investing in that money elsewhere, too.

[up][up] Presumably, no one has any particular ideas involving Wallflower. It happens. Unfortunately, she was part of a team that doesn't have the nostalgia base as the New Mutants or Generation X, so she's at a disadvantage for that. We're not getting Academy X reunions, she doesn't have a power that lends itself to exciting stories, she doesn't have any particular agenda or drive. She's a pretty normal girl, all in all, in a franchise filled with much stronger personalities.

Hell, she's not even a visually interesting character to throw into backgrounds.

Assume each drug sells as well (this is the best selling drug in America, actually.) That gives around $40 billion. That's not much for running a country, including expense for the business itself. Pharmacy companies have bigger profits, and they haven't purchased themselves a better public image like Magneto plans to do.

[up] Once again, they are investing that money in other things and getting massive returns. Just as well, Xavier is considered the richest man in the world (in comparison, Jeff Bezos currently has a net worth of $131 billion, which means Xavier is worth more than that) and has other sources of income (including X-Corporation run by the other billionaire, Sunspot).

You seem to be under the impression that "selling drugs" is their sole source of income when it isn't.

Shaoken Since: Jan, 2001

They also have the advantage of Kroaka providing all their infrastructure for free. A lot of the costs of running a country have already been taken care of.

#8294: Jan 17th 2020 at 7:36:30 AM

[up][up]Name one of those massive returns. X-Corp is a non-profit. Xavier and Sunspot inherited much of their wealth, and Sunspot is supposed to have given most of his away. Once again, all the money of every billionaire in the U.S. (let alone two) would only run the government for a couple of months. It's a matter of scale. Those three drugs are Krakoa's exports. Xavier has some outside companies in his name, but the economic domination that Magneto expects is from the drug trade. Wolverine Waste Management couldn't provide that before Krakoa, so it wouldn't now.

Name one of those massive returns.
I don't need to, it's a fictional comic book. It's called Suspension of Disbelief. Not everything has to be laid out for us to see.

Also, Krakoa is a self-sustaining nation. It doesn't need the same resources as other nations, since it can just grow them. Therefore the drug money doesn't even need to be used like other countries.

Xavier and the other mutants are making a ton of money and using it to their advantage. Deal with it.

[up] Huh. I wonder if that's Vita Ayala's book and what it's about.

Yep, Children of the Atom by Vita Ayala and Bernard Chang. It's also going to be about a new class of mutants, the X-Men's "sidekicks."

“I have never known a world without mutants and the X-Men, and to be able to create characters that would become part of the canon is WILD. I love them very much. Bernard, Chris, and I have worked so hard on them, and I was practically itching to let them out into the world so others could love them too,” says Ayala. "What makes the new cast special to me is that they are reflective of a lot of people I know who look up to what the X-Men stand for, and have taken it upon themselves to further those ideals. These kids are exactly the kids who, in real life, have posters of Storm and Wolverine in their rooms, who grew up seeing them as heroes and want to live up to that.”

This is pretty exciting, actually. The upcoming run of X-books will now have two female writers (Tini Howard, Leah Williams), one non-binary writer (Vita Ayala), and one Chip Zdarsky.

You know I was reading the new Iron Man book, and how tony and everyone are like I'm just a copy of my mind in a new body I'm not real, and over in the x-men books its like yeah most of us are copies of our minds in new bodies at this point and its fine.
