Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Wonder who could Huerta be playing? I can't think of anyone from BP's rogue gallery who is latino.

Maybe... Namor? DOOM?

Neither of those are Latino either (one's coded Asian and the other is a eastern european Romani). It's more likely they're race lifting somebody.

On the note of Chadwick, there is a bittersweetness to seeing that the movie he put so much passion into is carrying forward. It's a delicate situation but I trust Coogler and the crew to tackle with it properly.

I imagine BP 2 will open with a memorial on T'challa's honor (or his burial but that might be Too Soon).

"The man who opened us up to the world", I imagine. IMO they may be getting around to this film a bit too soon, but perhaps it's because they need the extra time to figure out how to handle the situation gracefully.

Huh. A Hispanic bad guy. That I was not expecting.

Either they're race lifting someone, or they went with a very interesting pick.

Unless...

You think he's playing Mephisto?

In what way?

And then eventually, we'd find out that she is Talos' daughter.

She's Super-Skrull's daughter though.

The ultimate evil and the closest thing Marvel has to Satan being Latino would be easy to read uncomfortably to say the least.

That being said if he's gonna show up as human at all he's got to have some ethnic appearance so you're bound to offend someone anyway. Unless you hire several diverse people to play him taking different shapes, or he's inhuman looking enough to the point of being unrecognizable as any race.

When the idea popped in my head, I imagined Huerta voicing and mo-capping a largely CGI being anyway, instead of awkwardly having Mephisto be represented as human like the Ghost Rider movies did.

Hell, even making Mephisto white would come with its own Unfortunate Implications regarding white Europeans as default.

As long as they don’t make him stereotypically Latino I think Huerta’s role should be fine. Especially since the heroes are also people of color. We Latinxs want to have fun playing the supervillains too, ya know?

There's a lot of telenovelas with latin actors playing el diablo.

This really seems like a reach.

As long as they don’t make him stereotypically Latino

I don't see why it would be.

As a Latino (if one of the Latino odd man out of Brazil) I would agree. As long as he's no stereotypical go for it.

Hell, I'm even partial to the idea of incrementing elements of Mexican portrayals of the Devil if done with care by someone who knows what they're doing.

R.I.P. Fat Thor

Oh, and he doesn't say it out loud, but judging by his comment to Hemsworth's instagram post, Chris Pratt basically just confirmed he'll be in Love and Thunder.

We probably knew that already, but whatever!

Fat Thor had its problems but I hope they let Hemsworth settle on a medium instead of going back to super ripped and also majorly dehydrated

I still think fat Endgame Thor with the braided beard is the best MCU Thor has ever looked. That was the first time I looked at MCU Thor and didn't see Chris Hemsworth, I saw THOR, Norse god of lightning.
