At this point some people would kill for a X-Men movie without Mags, and he isn't needed for one anyway. Beware the Batman did just that, and a few issues aside, it was considered pretty good.

Yeah, see, that's kinda the issue for Beware the Batman. I won't deny it was good, but frankly... can we really say they succeeded at doing it without Batman's rogues gallery? In the end, most villains in it ended up expies of the villains they were trying to avoid rather than their own things. For example, Magpie pretty much became a slightly darker take on Catwoman rather than her comic book self.

... Batman Beyond?

Granted it went to the well of classic villains occasionally (and to the J-Man himself for the grand finale), but none of them were regulars, I don't believe.

Still, if you aren't gonna use the big names, better do something impressive with the C-Listers.

Seconding Beware the Batman not being the greatest example.

They did the series without Joker, in the sense that they took a completely different character and turned him into a discount Joker instead. It was really transparent.

[up]Exactly. Anarky in this show pretty much had nothing to do with his comic counterpart and was instead made basically the Dark Knight version of the Joker without the monster clown aspect.

[up] Oof. When you put it like that, it probably would've been less of a hassle to just have Joker. Or make him a new villain all together.

Was anyone bummed we never got to have Robin?

It wasn't. I was saying it was a shame she didn't appear. Guess I should have phrased that differently.

I think Beware the Batman was mostly Alan Burnett trying to find more obscure characters because when you do a different Batman show every 5 years you can only find so many variations on the characters and stories to tell with them. Batman and his classic villains have been done A LOT.

I would also be super okay with Ed Asner playing GG.

... while we're at it, I still think Jeffrey Combs should play an older The Question.

with batman...well, it dosent help some villians are just expy of other villians, it also happen in movies: batman return is good but burton pinguin is more killer croc and catwoman is pretty much harley in a cat suit, or batman forever who have pretty much two variation of the joker with two face and the riddler.

Now about doing superman and the elite....I will said no, the meta comentary dosent work here because dark, gritty heroes are the exception, no the rule in cimenatic universe, specially with marvel "awsome, quite quipy and sightly irreleverent" being more prominent, that comentary would fell flat here.

catwoman is pretty much harley in a cat suit

In fairness, that iteration of Catwoman predates Harley's creation.

[up]A shame because for me it would be the best harly so far, granted im not a fan of harley as DC deadpool really.

Beware the Batman did have some inventive uses of Batman's rogues gallery outside of Anarky thoguh, though. Neat takes on Professor Pyg, Humpty Dumpty and Magpie.

I liked Beware the Batman for a reason: because it tries something different and succeeded.

Oh, and Anarky is not a discount Joker. Some of you, I presume, only saw his debut episode. A classic case. BTW, it may be Magnum Opus Dissonance, but my opinion is that Anarky was my favorite villain from this show. I would be happy if at least there is someone who shares my opinion.

[up]I watched the entire series, actually. And while I do agree he improves later on, I do not feel like he really gained his own identity and did something unique. Shame because I had high hopes for him.

Now I am not saying the show didn't succeed at doing something different — several parts, such as the Outsiders, were actually pretty good. But most villains... It was pretty obvious they filled the same archetype than classic Batman villains.

I too watched the entire series. Anarky improves, but only eventually. He spends a great deal of time as a clear riff off Joker and only really starts to change once his initial arc/season has run its course, and after then he was shunted into more of a supporting villain role surrounded by stronger characters.

Could be worse, though: it could be the shitshow that was Arrow’s take on Anarky.

God, don't remind me of that little shit.

Man, it seems like only Alan Grant, Anarky's creator, really understands him and how to write him.

Man, Anarky really gets a terrible luck with adaptations, doesn't he? From a sympathetic Anti-Hero in the comic, he is almost always turned into a cliché Bomb Throwing Anarchist in adaptations. Shame, because he's a nice aversion of the stereotype initially.

I wonder if the tone will be dark horror drama like Gail Simone’s runs or lighthearted comedy like Batgirl of Burnside and Rebirth.

[up] I'm leaning towards lighthearted comedy? Pretty sure the point of Batgirl was that she wasn't nearly as grim as Batman. (Could be wrong, but...)

Anyway, if anyone is looking forward to Aquaman 2, you may need to wait a while longer.

Because Jason Momoa is channeling his inner Aquaman in real life and is rioting against construction happening in Hawaii.
