General support.
Fight smart, not fair.Oh yeah. Oh hell, yeah, I support this.
Incidentally, VB, I'd also like to commend you on a practically perfect opening post for a rename thread. You put all the reasons in support of renaming in clear, concise coherent form. Very nicely done!

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.I'll look to that as a model for describing my rename proposals.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Pro rename.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickSupport too. For The Cel Of It, as a pun, makes me think if gratuitous cel-shading, and that's not the point.
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.For The Cel Of It would be a good name for gratuitous cel-shading, but it's a terrible name for the basic concept.
So should we do a definition swap and make it a Sub-Trope? The definition would be if an installment has cel shading when it's not in other installments (at least those with Polygonal Graphics). Thus Red Steel 2 and some of The Legend Of Zelda games would fit, but not Dragon Quest VIII or IX, since that series isn't known for standard texturing anyway.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.@ OP: Cel yes.
@ Shale: The cell-shading equivalent of Conspicuous CG then?
I didn't write any of that.Something like that, sure. I'm a lot more sure about the name than any particulars of the (hypothetical) trope.
For The Cel Of It is a poorly-thought out name trying to be witty. Yay for changing.
How does one say that something is cel-shaded gratuitously though?
Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life.Another +1 for renaming to Cel Shading.
For the suggested other trope, what are we thinking? A trope like Conspicuous CG and Sprite/Polygon Mix? Something else?
For the Sprite/Polygon Mix type trope, I can think of at least one - Wild Arms 3 had cel shaded sprites but traditionally shaded 3D backgrounds. Perhaps we should YKTTW that to see if it's common.
EDIT: Hmm, I think The Legend Of Zelda Spirit Tracks had that, too. But I could be misremembering.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.The pun isn't that bad, and is kind of fun. I wouldn't mind if it kept it's Punny name...although the odds of it being kept are extremely low...
Troper Page_+1 for Rename... the Cel Shading fad seems to have died down recently. (Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 will have an option to change from normal gfx to Cel Shading.)

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!"How does one say that something is cel-shaded gratuitously though?"
As I stated, if other games in the series are not.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I support the rename. Makes more sense, although the pun is funny. Cel Shading just works better.
Supporting the rename — this name should have been for Conspicuous Cel or Gratuitous Cel.
Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google? What about the games that use it for artistic purposes (e.g. Zelda), or those trying to emulate the anime/cartoony style found in 2D sprites?

Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life. One entry in a series being cel shaded is not "gratuitous," unless you're using a completely different meaning of the word (that is, different from uncalled for; lacking good reason; unwarranted).
I don't think it's even possible for cel shading to be gratuitous.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Okay, then whatever word or phrase means "isn't typical for the series, but for this installment, we decided to do it".
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. Can you explain why such a subtrope would be necessary in the first place?
I think it would be confusing to have a trope for cel-shaded works, and another one for... cel-shaded works that follow non-cel-shaded works in the same series.
The occurrence of one-off cel-shaded works within a series might be interesting, but I think it's too narrow for its own trope. Is there a broader trope out there about works with an art/animation style distinct from the rest of the series?
Oh, and Cel Shading would be great.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And even if it is broke, just ignore it and maybe it'll be sort of OK — like the environment."I support the swap. The pun isn't even clever. I mean, come on.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Wow, I was expecting a bunch of people to protest that since it isn't being misused it shouldn't be renamed. Your approval fills me with whatever the opposite of shame is.
I'll let this thread stew for another day just in case anyone else wants to have their say, but it looks like the consensus is to rename.
Ukrainian Red CrossI agree that "one cel shaded entry in an otherwise <other art style> series" is a little too narrow for a trope. A better trope is the previously suggested "one different art style in an otherwise <other art style> series". I'm not convinced there's enough examples for cel shading alone to make a trope just for that.
I'd suggest making the broader super trope, and soft splitting it by the type of art style that is in the divergent entry. (pixel art, vector art, cel shaded, realistic 3D, etc). If one of those entries grows to take over the page, then split.
EDIT: I think there's enough of the Cel/3D mix to make a trope along the lines of Sprite/Polygon Mix. I will YKTTW it for now, and we can hash out whether to give it the For The Cel Of It name later.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.The name is unnecessarily snarky, as though it's an instance of gratuitous cel-shading. Absolutely no reason not to rename it.
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.
The prime rule when choosing a trope title is that if there is a pre-existing term, use that. If not, choose one that is clear, concise, and clever, or failing that, clear.
For The Cel Of It fails on several counts, and thus should be changed to Cel Shading.
Hence, I propose that For The Cel Of It be renamed Cel Shading. With the ptitle replacement system, this can be accomplished without disrupting any inbound links.
