Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Coming Home and the battle with Morlun is one of Spider-Man's best fights. Morlun himself has issues in that he's Generic Doomsday Villain-ish. Still JMS used him better than Slott did. But maybe Morlun's best days are ahead. Kraven only became a hotshot thanks to JMD deciding that "Russian=Dostoevsky" and deciding to make Kraven into a Dostoevsky-style psychopath in a Spider-Man story. Like Crime and Punishment has an aristocratic bad guy who commits suicide at the end and says "I am going to America", and KLH is about Kraven a Russian aristocrat in America who ends the story killing himself.

Kraven has variety. He can go to this deep dark place but he's also Laughably Evil and ludicrous. Nick Spencer's current event is a blend of Kraven from different eras and shows him shifting registers. Sometimes Kraven is a Contemplative Boss philosophizing, other time he's a goofball with oddly specific fixations and obsessions. Kraven become tier-4 below Goblin-Venom-Octopus is something pretty unexpected.

August Solicitations

Oh, there's a black suit Spider-Man story coming in August which is said to be based off a pitch by a fan in the 80s that pre-dates Secret Wars, and Peter David's going to adapt it.

[up]Not just any pitch — the original pitch for the black suit, where the spider was blood-red. I don’t know anything about the actual story that the fan pitched, so I’m excited to see what they do with it.

The very best, like no one ever was. Check out my Spider-Man fanfic here! [1]

The female Sinister Syndicate

And it looks like Caroline Trainer is getting a new look that's similar to Spider-Verse Doc Ock.

Guess someone's gotta pick up Otto's slack.

She's not gonna ask her friends to call her Liv, but maybe this new look will breathe new life into her.

You know what bothers me? That to this day Nick Spencer has yet to poke fun at the fact that Boomerang started his career going after the Hulk.

Boomerang, whose shtick is using gimmick boomerangs, thought he could up against.

I'm honestly surprised Spencer hasn't done more with that.

[up][up][up]Hopefully they take a few notes from Spider-verse in terms of characterization as well as look, since Liv's evil Ms. Frizzle vibe was inspired.

SPEAKING of Liv

One thing that gets stuck in my craw about people who draw Into The Spider-Verse fanart or do fics, aside from their fixation on drawing Peter B. at the lowest point in his life as if it's his natural state and making him a punchline (A DISCUSSION FOR ANOTHER TIME) is this other fixation people have about putting them together. Not that they had a past together, which is more than hinted at, or that they're potentially romantically connected, I mean putting them together after the events of the movie, after the fact.

Which

I just can't, in a million years, ever see May Parker doing.

Olivia Octavius had a direct hand in the murder of her son. If you think May will ever, ever let that go, you're out of your mind.

[up] That is kinda annoying.

Still, the implication that they might have been romantically involved is kinda hilarious to me.

It's especially funny, if you imagine Peter being all horrified that May is dating his arch-nemesis, and May refusing to put up with it.

I'll tell you what I want to know about Liv:

Why in the blue hell did she not set off Peter. B's Spider-Sense?

That thing should have been blaring so damned hard his head exploded, but he was caught totally flat footed by Liv. That makes no sense.

Sure, it makes for a great reveal (and damned if that wasn't an awesome moment), but still.

Peter has to recognize a threat for it to go off. So he can tell when a rock is coming at his head but not if Aunt May had a gun hidden in her purse.

What about all the times it goes off when he's not directly looking at something.

Like when a dude sneaks up behind him and it warns him?

It’s plot sense

I think the reason Peter B's spider-sense not going off was because he didn't recognize Olivia as a Dr. Octopus. Olivia also had no intention of doing anything lethal at the moment since she wanted to study the effects on Peter B.

That might make sense. When his spider sense goes off around people who aren't doing anything to him, it's usually because they still intend to do something (like going off around Osborn because the latter knows he's Spiderman, or around Chameleon disguised as Jonah, even if Chameleon doesn't know Peter is Spiderman).

If Olivia was 100% focused on studying the effects of Peter B.'s presence in her world, then she would likely not be considered a threat until the moment when she went full Doc Ock.

The thing I’ve been wondering about the use of Spider-Sense in Spider-Verse is how Gwen was able to find Miles School before he got bitten.

I know they added the bit about it going off when they meet other Spider People, but she was in his school before Miles gets his powers.

Gwen's Spidersense guiding her to Miles before he got his powers might be related to the fact that she was a week early timeline wise. That's only a guess, but it's the best one I can gather.

She also didn't start experiencing the cellular degeneration until after she caught up (when the Peter of Mile's universe died), so maybe she was just early in everything because of that.

Since we are talking about it, does anyone have any ideas for what the next Spider-Verse villain could be?

I’ve seen rumors about the creators wanting to do more with Liv, but I just can’t see her being enough to justify a big Crisis Crossover with the heavy hitters like 2099, on her own.
