Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

There are two character counts; the source and the html. But none of this actually matters - if a page is too long to comfortably read or the edit page throws up a warning, then it is too long and you can bring it up here.

it literally says in the pinned header that the limit is about 500,000 html characters - when the page completely breaks. From experience, it is around 350,000 when the functionality drops significantly. Anything over 300,000 should probably be considered, as well as anything too aesthetically long.
That page could definitely do with folderizing, though I would also suggest bringing it up in the Trope Description Inprovement Drive.

If the description, rather than the page, is too long, it should probably go to the Trope Description Improvement Drive thread.
So I was updating the Grey's Anatomy character page and... there's 77 characters listed, with an additional subsection hidden for the still-untitled spinoff about to be released. It's not quite at technical issue too long, but obviously it's ridiculously cumbersome.
I'm not quite sure how to split it off, but I'm thinking that for now just moving the former character section to its own page would work Grey's Anatomy Former Main Characters. Perhaps also separating off the characters that belong to the other work pages (Private Practice and B-Team).
So I'll do that, but the biggest issue is where to put Addison Montgomery — she was a main character on GA and PP, she stayed on PP until it ended but she left GA halfway through, so technically a former main character and a "current" (i.e. still at Seaside) character. Of course, she wouldn't be the only PP character to be not in the Seaside list, with Amelia (current on both GA and PP), Dell and Pete (dead) on other lists, so I'll keep her with the former main characters.
