No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

@Sebastian Gray: Eh...it certainly applies to Craftworld and Harlequins, and at least some outcasts like certain pirate princes. On the other hand, I am not thinking of anything particularly effeminate about (male) Dark Eldar apart from the non-Beastmaster Wyches, and most of the outcasts seen are grubby rangers/pathfinders or rough, scruffy pirates-just dirtier versions of Craftworlders, without the bling or shiny equipment that would be associated with the Agent Peacock archetype. Likewise absent from the Exodites.

I think I would just leave it restricted to Craftworld and Harlequins, all considered.

Does anyone know where the Angels of Death series is going to be broadcast?

[up]Not as far as I know. It will probably be streamed online somewhere though.

Next trope question: The following is the entry on the Drukhari page for Abstract Eater

  • Abstract Eater: The Dark Eldar gain quite literal sustenance from absorbing the psychic output of their victims' pain and suffering, and other emotions can be bottled up and used to "season" them for extra flavor.
Inquisitor Lord Czevak: Their fodder [...] is not meat and muscle, but the anguish and despair of the weak. The Dark Eldar do indeed drink blood, but also tears, and most sustaining of all the raw essence of pain that they wring out of their captives.

Is their any actual source that they gain sustenance from pain and suffering beyond that quote as I cannot find reference to it. The background material I can find says they use pain to nourish their souls. While I do think this still may count as Abstract Eater I am not totally sure and it isn't really reflected in the entry itself but I am unsure how to rewrite it to reflect the background.

The trope fits. It's pretty much what The Thirst is. They need to absorb the suffering of others to make up for the pull of Slaanesh on their souls. And the Thirst only gets worse the more they indulge since continuing to engage in hedonistic behavior only strengthens Slaanesh's influence (what with Slaanehs being the embodiment of hedonism).

This is also why Drukhari who defect and join Craftworlds don't die of the Thirst. They have grown weary of soulless hedonism and no longer engage in that behavior, which weakens Slaanesh's grip.

It's why the Wytch Colosseums are so vital — they are one of the only ways a lot of Drukhari can gain mass nourishment without particpating in realspace raids.

[up]While I wasn't sure, I did say that I thought it fitted the trope, I was more looking for advise as to how to rewrite the example to properly reflect the background (and possibly do without the quote).

  • Abstract Eater: The Drukhari feed on the pain and suffering of others to weaken Slaanesh's pull on their souls (dubbed The Thirst). This is one of the major reasons Wytch Colosseums exist: they provide entertainment and nourishment at once for the Drukhari masses.

Looks fine. I just fixed up a couple grammar and spelling errors.

[up]Don't forget that Drukhari need normal food and drink too. Which the colosseums might also provide — hey, all of those bodies have to be disposed of somehow...

[up][up]I remenber in a spanish webpage were a guy call agrammar(a HUGE lore nerd who found stuff no even the wiki found), said he never find the idea of dark eldar engaging in normal drink or food and it give to the expeculation that no, the dark eldar dosent eat at all except Souls.

Which it really make the quote of vect more literal: Misery is meal, terro is his wine.

[up]I think the Dark Eldar novel series has scenes of Dark Eldar feasting on fine meats and drinks.

So they probably do still need to get nutrition the normal way in addition to absorbing suffering to stave off The Thirst.

The archons' diet probably consists entirely of Exotic Entree — decadent dishes made from the flesh of extinct animals for example.

Also since the dark eldar are dark eldar, I guess every food will get it in the most awfull and dickish manner

[up]If I have to guess, they will grab the last member of someone species, then subject to horror, explain to him he is going to be eaten and let him alive while they cut him up.

Remenber: with the drukhari you always need to think "What is the most dickish thing imaginable?" and then try to top that.

I notice Erebus has been added to the Chaos Marine page again. The last time he was on there I believe it was decided that due to his lack of appearances in the 41st millennium he should be kept to the Horus Heresy pages. I have sent a PM about the issue to the troper who added him but wanted to check if this should still be the case (he is only briefly mentioned once in Codex Heretic Astartes: Chaos Space Marines after all).

Word Bearers also has its own character page (although that should only include tropes from the series).

[up]In addition to his actions during the 13th Black Crusade, Erebus shows up in one of the short stories, where he allows himself to be captured by the Inquisition as part of a plot to gather information and assassinate a specific target. He is definitely still active in the 41st millennium and continues to work with at least some of the Word Bearers; and unlike most of the Traitor Primarchs he did not spend almost all of that time in the Eye of Terror.

Okay, its morning now rather than the middle of the night and I have had a couple of hours sleep so lets see if I can explain myself a bit better (working in a hotel/restaurant at Christmas coupled with mild insomnia isn't great for my, already limited, ability to explain myself).

My main concern with Eerebus is having things in their proper place so as to avoid duplication of work and information. Erebus is primarily a character detailed in Horus Heresy and Word Bearers and so should primarily be troped on those pages (as I previously mentioned he only gets a single mention in the pre-Heresy section of Codex Heretic Astartes: Chaos Space Marines and isn't mentioned at all in the Word Bearers section of the book). If there is information from other sources that is tropable then he could get an entry on the Chaos Marine character page if he has three or more tropes (this is a trope wiki after all not a 40K/Games Workshop wiki after all) otherwise such tropes should be integrated into the Word Bearers trope list. As written, the recently added entry deals solely with the Horus Heresy so even if it is kept then it will need to be almost totally rewritten to bring it up to the 41st Millennium.

In addition to his actions during the 13th Black Crusade

The only info I can find about his 13th Black Crusade actions comes from a newsletter from the now largely non-canon Eye of Terror Worldwide campaign, I cannot remember him being mentioned in Gathering Storm or source set subsequently.

Erebus shows up in one of the short stories, where he allows himself to be captured by the Inquisition as part of a plot to gather information and assassinate a specific target.

I haven't been able to find any information on this.

Erebus is perhaps the one person who is most directly responsible for completely fucking up the Imperium. Yes, things were already heading in a troubling direction — Erebus wouldn't have been able to pull his shit off if they weren't — but he's still The Heavy in the story of the Imperium's downfall.
