- Crazy Is Cool: XCOM in general comes off as this a lot of the time, with the list of Things XCOM Operatives Are No Longer Allowed to Do being canon.
- Harsher in Hindsight: Following the Mission to Newfoundland, Yang is turned into a MEC Trooper and loses her arms and legs. In Canon, Yang ends up losing her right arm to Adam during the Vytal Festival and spends half the next season working up enough mojo to put on a cybernetic replacement. Here, though, she did it because XCOM was forced to turn Blake into a MEC Trooper, and she didn't want her partner to feel alone.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- In one early chapter, Blake mentions having to dumpster dive for food as a kid. This of course was writtern before Volume 4 showed that this was certainly not likely to be a concern she had growing up.
- Early in RWBY Within, Blake asked Shen for a melee weapon. While Shen initially refused because XCOM operatives tended to avoid hand-to-hand combat, he ultimately gave her a laser-powered knife. Fast forward to XCOM 2 - which had its first trailer released few weeks after this chapter - and not only we get a new class capable of using swords, but their fully upgraded weapons use a very similar technology (with plasma instead of laser, but the mechanic seems to be the same).
- Ren's Nom de Guerre, "Shrike", matches the name of a renegade faction of former XCOM soldiers from XCOM: Chimera Squad.
- Too Cool to Live: Colonel Zhang in RWBY Within. Beagle and Hogarth in Remnant Unknown.
- Unexpected Character: Nobody expected anything from The Bureau: XCOM Declassified to show up, much less Asaru.
