YMMV / Vampire Wars

Go To

  • Narm: You'd think it would be near impossible to cram so much ham & cheese into a single one hour OVA but Vampire Wars certainly found a way to do it:
    • First and foremost, the name of the protagonist, Kuki Kosaburo probably sounded fine in the original language script but to english speakers comes off as silly due to it sounding and being pronounced exactly like "cookie" every single time its said. This would be bad enough by itself but when deciding to work for the W.I.N.G organization Kuki chooses to adopt the codename "Bat" (as the project he's investigating was named "Dracula" and he wanted his secret identity to share a similar theme) whenever he gets in touch with Lasaar. So our main hero goes by the moniker of Mr. "Bat" Kuki for most of the OVA. Not helped at all by Kuki's smug expression and tone of voice implying that the name seemed really badass to him when he thought of it.
    • One of George Lassar's goons is a giant man with a stone cold unblinking expression... and a voice that sounds exactly like Dr. Claw! This turns nearly all of the guy's scenes into complete jokes and makes it very easy to imagine that the goon is literally Dr. Claw himself since the original Claw never showed his true face in the cartoon, amping the unintentional comedy dial even higher as a result. Then you get to some of his actual lines of dialogue and... yeah.
GET THIS TWO DIME SLUT OUTTA HERE!
MR. LASAAR, THIS MAN IS FUCKED!
APPARENTLY THEY REKON THESE VAMPIRES ARE CRAZY FOR OUR BLOOD, I HEAR IT'S TO DO WITH AN UNUSUAL NEUCLIAC ACID IN OUR DNA ahhh shiiit...! (Dies Wide Open with a blank stare)
    Lasaar: Are you comfortable?
Kuki: Let me out of this cocksuckin' thing!
    • An otherwise dramatic scene of Lasaar and Kuki discussing project "Dracula" is ruined by a botched line reading that the voice director apparently just left in. Oops.
Lasaar: I guess you figured out what I want you to do by now?
Kuki: Yeah, you want to find out what this "Dracula" project is and you don't want to put one of your own guys on it because you don't want to be seen investigating one of your allies. (points his gun at Lasaar) That's very underhand!
  • So Okay, It's Average: While the OVA hardly lives up to the name Vampire Wars (there are only a few actual vampires in the story and most of the conflict is between normal human groups) it does provide enough action, mystery and plot twists to keep fans of the genre entertained for the full runtime. When it comes to vampire fiction people could certainly do a lot worse than this title.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Kuki, the main protagonist, suffers from a bit of this. While he's mostly heroic and well-meaning for the majority of the OVA a lot of fans are unable to get past his backstory. Apparently, he was part of a secret KGB project and has many shady connections to people who are explicitly identified as violent terrorists and criminals. This can make it pretty hard to root for him when he almost certainly has dozens if not hundreds of innocent deaths on his hands. Even ignoring that he's a hardened freelance mercenary by trade, meaning he's probably done some pretty bad things for a little quick cash before.
