YMMV / UnREAL (2015)

Go To

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Easily the most popular ship in the fandom is Rachel/Quinn. Almost all of the fanfiction for the show is exclusively is for this pairing and it is easily more popular than any of Rachel's canon relationships (such as Jeremy or Tommy) or Quinn's affair with Chet. This is mainly due to a lot of fans feeling that the two have far better chemistry with each other than their male love interests and the fact that Rachel is Quinn's dragon, along with one of the few people Quinn actually cares about.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: After Gawker's outing scandal, Rachel is going to feel very lucky she didn't leak the video about Kirk to Jezebel.
    • Chet's various remarks about Quinn being "dried up" during Season 1 and early episodes of Season 2 and any references to the possibility of Quinn being a mother become pretty uncomfortable after it's revealed that Quinn is infertile.
    • The show's premise itself after the Bachelor In Paradise rape scandal.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Considering Anna and Adam didn't go through with the wedding in season 1 after Adam bailed, the fact that their actors married for real in December 2016 can't help but be this.
  • Hollywood Homely: Rachel is told by Chet that she's "not hot enough to be crazy", and in season 2 one of the contestants who looks vaguely like her is nicknamed "Hot Rachel". Even if she often goes without makeup, she's still played by Shiri Appleby.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Rachel and Quinn, the latter taking form much more during Season 2.
  • Moral Event Horizon: If Jeremy had any fans going into Season 2, his drunken assault on Rachel at the end of "Infiltration" cost him all of them.
    • Fans weren't too keen about her during Season 1, but the revelation in Season 2 that Rachel's mother facilitated her daughter's rape by one of her patients to protect her practice led the entire fanbase to thoroughly despise her. Her telling Rachel that "no one will love her if they find out" particularly irked the fans.
    • In season 4, Rachel tries to press contestant Maya to admit how a "bachelor" raped her during an earlier installment. As Quinn shows up at the control room, she finds Rachel has arranged for that same man to get to a bedroom with another woman, each believing the other one wants this. Quinn wants to stop it but Rachel keeps going as Maya finally attacks her rapist and stabs him in the crotch. Everyone is rocked but Rachel is pressing for the cameras to get close-ups of the blood. She then does a "panicked" 911 call, grinning wildly all the time. Even Quinn (who just helped fake a woman giving birth for ratings) is utterly horrified at what Rachel has done and realizes a serious line has been crossed.
  • The Scrappy: Jay and Jeremy both become this for several fans in Season 2: Jay for being hypocritical for constantly saying Rachel is going over the line despite having done the same things Season 1, and Jeremy for becoming an incredibly bitter Jerkass.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Quinn finding out that she is unable to have children in "Espionage" and her subsequent breakdown. Seeing the usually in-control and stone cold Quinn breaking down in a fit of tears is especially heartbreaking.
      • This exchange:
Rachel: Quinn, do you want to have kids?
Quinn: I WANTED A CHOICE! (breaks down in tears)
    • In season 3, Rachel finding out that her father knew about her being raped at 12 and never mentioned it to her. She's utterly crushed and can only go to Quinn and curl up on her lap.
