YMMV / Thumper

  • Awesome Music: Perhaps as expected of a rhythm game, the game provides dark soundscapes and thumping beats that go along with the game's visuals. You can listen to it here.
  • Breather Boss: Level 9-8 Boss is very short and doesn't use any new gimmicks besides just turning suddenly and obscuring the turns with fences. While it can be distracting to have low visibility of the track, at this point the player should have already been through much worse.
  • Creepy Awesome: The game's visual direction; many reviewers have compared the game's horrific visuals to going to the edge of the universe and seeing things human eyes weren't meant to see. That being said, it's agreed to be awesome and one of the game's strongest points.
  • Difficulty Spike: The game hits one in level Infinity, where the speed of the game changes constantly in addition to dealing with the obstacles.
  • Genius Bonus: Starting with level two, each level has a different time signature, with the level number corresponding to the beats in each bar.
  • Goddamned Bats: The snakes that appear from level 4 onward. They are relatively easy to dodge as you simply need to move to the left and right and will only take up time between more stressful parts of the stage. Furthermore, in contrast to every other obstacle in the game, it is impossible to gain any points from them, meaning their presence is only detrimental and annoying.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Every single final boss is absolutely terrifying. Crakhed takes the form of a burning, screaming human head, continuously getting more menacing... up until the last stage, where he's a gigantic mass of teeth, eyes, and tentacles, and visually resembles many depictions of Azathoth.
  • Nintendo Hard: With how fast the game moves, especially at the higher levels, prepare to die a lot. You have unlimited lives, but dying takes you back to the last checkpoint, so prepare to repeat several sections dozens of times.
  • That One Level: The entirety of level nine may as well qualify. To elaborate:
    • The level is a test of all the game mechanics combined, on top of the very high speed that you will have to cope with. The second-to-last portion gets faster and faster until you can hardly even react to the turns.
    • Level Infinity, where you face the True Final Boss, is not a cakewalk either. In addition to dealing with the usual obstacles you've been facing, the speed of the game changes constantly. This is not something that was in the previous levels, by the way.
