YMMV / The Testaments: Of One Fold and One Shepherd

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Kohor telling Jacob to warn Amaron. Was it a calculated move to distance himself from the impending murder and keep Jacob's trust? Or did he legitimately want to give Amaron a chance to live, which only failed because Jacob waited for Amaron to finish teaching? Did he personally not want to kill Amaron but defended the murderer in court once it happened out of loyalty? It's worth pointing out Kohor has no problem killing the governor and plotting to wipe out the believers afterward, but doesn't seem to have ordered Amaron's murder.
  • Designated Hero: It's hard to root for Jacob when he spends the majority of the movie ignoring his father and looking out for himself. The most he does is refuse to join Kohor under threat of death... but later that same scene begs Kohor to save him from the earthquake.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The dynamic, hammy Kohor is generally seen as the best part of the Mesoamerican side of the movie.
  • Fountain of Memes: Kohor is possibly the single most quotable original character in any official Latter-Day Saint media.
  • Iron Woobie: Helam loses his father figure, has his son turn away from his beliefs, thinks the Messiah he's believed in has died without ever coming, and loses his sight. Nevertheless, he remains stoic and faithful, and in the end, is content with Jacob being able to see Jesus even if he can't. Thankfully, it doesn't stick.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: The scenes with Jesus are often considered the highlights of the movie, being less cheesy than the Mesoamerican parts. In particular, many watch the film simply for the last minute, where Jesus heals Helam.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Kohor is so much more competent, interesting, quotable, and fun compared to the good guys that it's hard not to want him to succeed.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Jacob and Laneah are probably meant to be "Adorkable peasant meets Uptown Girl," but they only get three (very awkward) scenes together. Jacob spends the first half of the movie coming off as a Stalker with a Crush and the second half as whiny and arrogant, and mostly seems to like Laneah for her looks. Yet somehow after just two scenes Laneah is clearly smitten with him and considering marriage.
