YMMV / The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Looks like Dr. Heiter is just as evil of a journalist as he is a doctor.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Jürgen Prochnow was a rising star in his native Germany at the time, but he wouldn't gain international recognition until the release of Das Boot six years later.
    • Dieter Laser, meanwhile, would later find both fame and infamy as the star of the first and third films in the notorious Human Centipede trilogy.
    • Fans of the 2018 remake of Suspiria may recognize Katharina as Miss Tanner.
  • Tear Jerker: Seeing Katharina being viciously bullied by a scandal-obsessed tabloid media to the point that she loses most of her friends and ultimately lashes out against the man who ruined her life and his accomplice can be pretty upsetting for many readers. Even more so in the film adaptation, thanks to Angela Winkler's heartrending performance. It doesn't help either that this sort of thing often happens in Real Life.
  • Values Resonance: In interviews for the 2003 Criterion Collection DVD release of the film, director Volker Schlöndorff and other crew members argued for the film's continued relevance today, drawing an analogy between the political climate of panic over terrorism in 1970s West Germany and the post-September 11, 2001 situation in the U.S. where unsubstantiated media hype was used to launch the invasion of Iraq.
